@ccgavin
thereās some things that just arenāt worth worrying about. like, yeah, he could get hit by a meteor falling from the sky or he could have his leg bitten off by a shark when he dips his toes in the ocean, but those are such rare and improbable occurrences that michael has never wasted energy worrying about them. he has more immediate fears; will this monster he fights be the last? is there a card waiting to stab him in the back? itās a strange life he lives that he worried more about magical creatures causing his demise than a car accident.
elevators are another thing that he expects to work just fine. heās never had a problem with them before, not in his old apartment in austin and certainly not in this new place he now lives in. michael mashes the button to go up, checking emails on his phone idly. nothing important there; he pockets the device as he furiously taps on the button to close the doors. thereās nothing worse than the awkward half a minute with a stranger on the elevator. apparently the button does not work, because the doors are in no rush to close.
gavin is nothing if not lazy. and he lives on the seventh floor, so he absolutely refuses to take the stairs up to his apartment. he knows itās faster, knows itāsĀ ābetter for him,ā but especially after walking home from work he refuses to put himself through anything else. heās stood in front of the elevator for ages before, because their apartment is so shitty that it only has one elevator servicing twelve floors. no matter how long he has to wait, though, itās still better than taking the stairs.Ā
but itās still better to not wait at all, which is why he hurries a bit when he sees the elevator doors open when he enters the lobby. he hurries his steps a bit, raising a hand to try to get the attention of the guy stepping on.Ā āhold the doors!ā he calls, and he doesnāt know if heās just lucky or if the guy hears him, but he manages to slip in just before the doors start to close. gavin lets out a relieved sigh and leans back against the back wall with a grin.Ā ācheers, mate,ā he says, not even knowing if the guy made any effort to hold the doors open for him.Ā āhit seven for me, would you?ā
the elevator starts moving up, and the lights to track what floor itās on havenāt worked since gavin moved here, so he doesnāt bother watching them, instead pulling out his phone and idly scrolling through his several pages of useless games and apps. just as heās about to pocket the device, knowing that itās nearing time for the doors to open on the seventh floor, the elevator shakes weirdly before jolting harshly, the lights going out and leaving them in almost total darkness, gavinās phone the only source of light in the small space.Ā
āoh, bugger me,ā he says in english, his voice breaking the surprised silence between them.Ā
