saw nolan’s the odyssey. it was fine. epic the musical did it better im sorry.
#circe penelope n calypso’s characters were treated very oddly imo#telemachus’s character arc is also WACK. the heroic figure of his father crumbling in front of his eyes as he sees a broken man slaughter#dozens of his mother’s suitors?? nah#‘not bad for a beggar’ ok man are you sure you escaped the mcu#nolan absolutely NUKED penelope.#SHE HELD DOWN THIS FORT 👏 FOR 👏 TWENTY 👏 YEARS#WHY is he writing her like this#its like when nolan writes female characters he is constantly reminding himself that theyre women and must be written exclusively as such#which is already like. ok man but THEN he fails to properly depict what he perceives as their ‘womanly’ issues??#ok so circe is an implied victim of SA? why is she comfortable with shoving her hand down mens throats for 5 min?#ok so penelope is understandably missing her husband after 20 years? so is odysseus. this is not just an issue for her as a wife but#for odysseus as a husband too! where is *his* yearning? his cracks? his unraveling? why is his pain stoic and melancholic#and penelope’s desparate and childlike#like a toddler throwing a tantrum? she literally screams ‘I WANT ODYSSEUS’ in her 20-yr-old sons face#the iconic ‘im nobody’ scene from the book was also cut. and the lotus eater island#even the percy jackson series remembered that#i feel like this shouldve been at LEAST a 2 movie project. wouldve helped a lot of the pacing issues. so many scenes felt rushed#its missing the gravitas#which needs time and room to breathe#it was just an inherently ambitious project that didnt meet the mark when it needed to considering the grandness of the source material#omg just remembered the bag of winds scene was also left out. man#the odyssey spoilers#<- ig#the odyssey 2026#theres nothing wrong with wanting to produce a new artistic interpretation of a classic literature. but nolan either fundamentally changes#disregards or fails to put a new spin on his versions the core characters. rivera-herrans's epic however does this fantastically#not saying nolan is a shit writer. he just missed the high bar this movie needed for what couldve been a truly astounding film (duology).#ugghhh im missing the artistry he had in oppenheimer!!! that movie had some truly incredible shots and messages#i wished i could see that same creativity in the odyssey
