Jewish woman in the Amazigh town of Goulmima, Morocco, ca. 1935. Jean Besancenot.
Jews inhabited the southern oases of Morocco since before the arrival of Islam. (…) Although subject to professional and residential restrictions, they integrated culturally and linguistically into local life, coming to speak a Judeo-Berber dialect. The vast majority of Jews left for Israel or France by Moroccan independence in 1956, with, according to local residents, the last Jew leaving the Goulmima region in 1967. (x)
