Five Steps for Registering in the NER
In order to be included in the NER register, engineers who are members of Engineers Australia and have worked in the engineering field for at least five years in the past seven years must meet the following requirements:
1) Providing Work Experience Statement
Engineers Australia has a self-assessment checklist that details the jobs, responsibilities, and skills individuals have acquired over their careers. The evaluation of work experience is done to confirm the applicant's technical abilities align with the practice areas he has specified.
When applying for NER Australia, you must demonstrate that you have completed 150 hours of CPD in the previous twelve months before applying for a National engineering register; however, 50 hours of CPD is the minimum requirement. You must also undergo a CPD evaluation every five years.
3) Nomination of Professional Referees
Referees should be selected who can verify the information and proof of the applicant's work experience as stated in their work experience statement. One of the professional referees might be the applicant's current employer.
If the candidate has worked for the company for five years, the second referee might also be the current employer. If not, someone from their previous firm will have to fill the position. Itâs hard to choose a friend to act as a referee.
4) Self-Assessment of PI Insurance
Applicants must satisfy the PI insurance benefit standards when registering for the NER, and demonstrate that they can retain them. Applicants must check with their employers to see if PI insurance is available.
In addition to contacting professional references by phone, Engineers Australia conducts video conferencing, Skype, and face-to-face interviews with applicants.
Non-members of Engineers Australia who wish to join the National Engineering Register must first complete the stage 1 competency exam. It compares the credentials, transcripts, CV, and work experience of Australia to Australian standards.
Initial application evaluation takes about three to four weeks. However, the overall time to complete the application may differ from applicant to applicant depending on the material you must submit.
The Eligibility Criteria for NER Engineers Australia

Applicants must possess relevant qualifications.
Applicants should have prior professional experience that is relevant to the position.

Applicants must keep up with their Continuing Professional Development.
Applicants must have the benefit of PI insurance.
Engineers Who are Chartered Members of EA

A non-member of Engineers Australia (EA) must also complete an additional procedure in addition to the five outlined above. This means the Engineer must first complete a skills assessment (Stage 1 Competencies) before proceeding to the next five levels.
A CDR report is required for applicants with universities that are not recognized under Engineers Australiaâs Accords. Along with three career episodes and a summary statement, CPD is an important part of the CDR report. The National Engineering Register application guidelines have more information on how to submit a CDR report.
Engineers who are already members of Engineers Australia can register by entering their ID. Engineers who are not members of Engineers Australia must pay fees and register separately.
Why Should you Seek Registration in the NER as a Practicing Engineer in Australia?
Being registered on the NER is preferable to being registered on government registries because they do not have the wide Areas of Practice of the NER. Employers can use this information to make more informed recruitment decisions and engineers can use it to search for career and business opportunities.
The National Engineering Register displays an engineer's expertise in engineering. It's a source of pride for Australia, as well as international admiration. Engineers can use the register to demonstrate their abilities and experience to potential employers.
The inclusion of an engineer in the registry shows that he or she is a trustworthy professional, and as a result, their social standing may improve.
Some of the plus points of becoming a member of the NER are as follows:
NER unlocks opportunities by exposing your certified profile to potential employers and recruiters, clients, marketers, and other professionals.
With the professional recognition that comes with NER, you will gain the authority to practice independently in your field of practice.
Being in the NER is an important step towards becoming a chartered engineer.
With NER, you can easily secure state registration as a professional engineer.
Areas of Practice Covered by the National Engineering Register
NER has a limit to the areas of practice it covers. If you want to proceed with NER registration, confirm that your qualification falls under the following practice areas.
Environmental Engineering
Telecommunications Engineering
NER Australia covers other areas of engineering practice; however, these areas are only applicable to chartered engineers who have completed Stage 2 Competency Claim with Engineers Australia. These include:
Building services engineering
Design and verification of pressure equipment
Oil and gas pipeline and petroleum engineering
Sub Divisional geotechnics
Leadership and management
How Much Time Does it Require to Get Registered on the NER?
The application assessment process usually takes 3 to 4 weeks. It may extend the period if the assessors request more papers. Engineers Australia assigns persons to its review panel that are highly skilled and experienced. They also undergo comprehensive training to make impartial and objective decisions.
