August 30th Background Tutorial for The_Doctor.
Got to talking with another user in the Game Jam and they revealed they wanted to know how to do colored line backgrounds like those used in Idea Factory’s Amnesia, but using Manga Studio5.
It’s a rather simple process, so I offered to make a tutorial to help them along.
Please enjoy and open the image in another tab to see it full view.
August 29th Update Updated User Interface, character expressions and music.
Been hard at work on my game and I have a couple more tidbits to talk about!
Updates to the UI/game design:
New title screen (finalized)
New custom buttons
Custom message box done!
Custom branch buttons done!
Characters drawn (4/7)
Character Expressions!
I haven’t spoken at any length about character expressions or how I go about handling them, but I think I found a pretty neat way of doing it!
Due to time constraints, I’m trying to be efficient in my assets since I’m making them all from scratch. That means that unless I get time towards the end to do more art, I’ll only be adjusting minor things about the character’s expression.
Take the .gif up there. Looks simple. It is.
I’ll probably write in length about my process for creating character art if there’s any interest later, but I’m guessing it’s not a new trick by any means.
Each ‘part’ of the expression is on it’s own layer. As I hide or show the layers, I can quickly come up with a mixture of expressions without having to re-draw anything. I prefer nuanced expressions though, so it’s more to my selfish taste. Either way, it really helps cut down on asset creation time!
Music!
This is definitely my weak point. I’m not even at the level of amateur, but I wanted to make everything myself as a personal challenge-- so here I am!
You’re welcome to take a listen to a couple of tracks over at my soundcloud, but the specifically linked one is going to be used in CE-5. I really enjoy wide ambient tracks and it’ll show, but I’m trying to branch out and make some neat things for the game!
To listen, click here: “Thoughts at 3AM”
I’ll have more updates soon once I get a couple more scenes banged out. I don’t want to show -too- much of the story right away and there are still almost three weeks!
Please look forward to it!
August 23rd Game development update
Posting a screencap of the game in progress.
You can see the character and art, how they fit together and some in-progress writing/font. Lotte is not her real name. :>
Still have to make a message window though.

August 22nd: Asset Update!
Here’s part three of three: Characters!
No names or anything until I publish my entry, sorry!
I’m keeping poses relatively simple and doing faceplate swaps, If I had more time, I’d go back and add more poses, but seeing as I’m going to only be doing 30 minutes of content with a LOT of editing to do-- single poses for now.
I might go back, time allowing, and add some more in!
I’ve only featured about half of the expression panels so far. I’ll share three for each.
Same as the backgrounds, these images belong to me as their creator. Please do not reuse, modify, redistribute, or re-purpose. They are not free assets for other people to use. (yet.) Feel free to reblog and like though.
August 22nd: Asset Update!
Here with part two of three: backgrounds for CE-5!!
I really want to try and keep things simple since my characters will be so large. I don’t want to make my screen ‘too’ busy that it becomes hard to focus.
Had some fun playing with angles and skewing perspectives as well as making textures!
Backgrounds were made in MangaStudio and are the property of Prism Projections. Please do not redistribute, modify, re-purpose, or use in any manner.
August 22nd
Lots of updates since my last posting! My birthday is tomorrow, so I’m taking today and tomorrow off from normal work to work on my entry. :D
I’ll cover the general updates now and post specifics later this evening!
Things Accomplished:
Two (4) backgrounds!
Three (3) more background set ups!
Title Screen Alpha version!
One (1) Character set!
Two (2) Songs!
The first two scenes written into Tyrano!
Things I want to accomplish before the 24th!
Six (6) more backgrounds
Two (2) more character sets
Two (2) more songs
Rewrite and script two (2) more scenes of the game
I’m still really worried the play time of the game will go too long, but my revisions of the first three scenes cut it down to two and when I tested/timed them, they were only 3 minutes long together..
I have a LOT to do, but I’m looking forward to sharing my progress a little later this evening! I’ll include my first character set: Lotte and some backgrounds/songs!
Please note: None of the items I post will be available for personal/commercial use outside my own projects. I already have plans to reuse songs and some backgrounds for my main VN.

Until then! o/
August 17th
TryanoBuilder and NyuMedia announced the theme for the first game jam.
“United by Fate.”
A theme often utilized in visual novels. I struggled to come up with an idea that wasn’t super cliche. I want to push myself to do something really creative. Thankfully, I was able to come up with a solid story line before bed and I’m really happy with it. The only real constraint I’m having problems with is trying to keep it around 30 minutes. I can already tell the story will be too long.
I’ll be creating all of the assets seen in game by myself from scratch as of the 17th. Characters, background, music, sound effects, writing. Everything is being done from the announcement period just using what I am able to do. It’ll be a fun challenge to see how far I can get as someone entirely new to the visual novel development scene.
I’ll try to keep record of what I did each day during the competition along with asset updates. Let’s start with today!
Things accomplished today:
Concept and Outline
Scenes and Scene Progression
Scenes Written and put into Tyrano Builder - 2/36
Made a development blog!
Things to aim for tomorrow:
Write scenes 10/36
Begin designing characters
Start writing music
Not bad for my first half a day!
Questions? Comments? Reblog or send me an ask!
Welcome to the development blog for CE-5.
I’m taking part in the TyranoBuilder Summer Game Jam! It started today around noon, so it’s been going for about 13 hours already!
The development time is a month long, so I thought I’d have some fun chronicling my development of my entry.
Have fun, stick around, and get ready to Jam!
