What the hell does thing expect people to have done? Hold a fundraiser for goddam friendster and force people to use it???
also most of those social media sites died bcs of poorly made decision’s by their own corporations tf why should we feel guilty about dropping a ship that is about to drown
I’d assume this is more-so about the mass loss of information that comes from websites being forgotten about and disconnected from the internet.
We think of lost information and lost media as being a problem that doesn’t exist anymore due to having large catalogs of information on the internet, but the truth is that those websites still need people to run them. It’s still physical data, located on a computer somewhere on Earth. If that computer is destroyed or becomes inaccessible, the information on that computer is lost.
As time goes on and more and more sites become abandoned and shut down, more and more information is disappearing. And while it might seem like not that big of a deal to lose some accounts of people discussing television shows or the like, the fact is that from a cultural and historical perspective, it’s a big deal.
I mean, think about all the culture of the past that has been lost, that we would give anything to be able to rediscover. Everything from ancient food recipes, to movies and TV shows that were later recorded over. Stuff that people didn’t think at the time would ever be significant or important.
All I’m saying is, it’s easy to think that loss of culture and history is a non-issue when you’re living during that cultural and historical period.
Good point! It’s actually a huge problem from a media studies point of view that people don’t record shows anymore on VHS for instance, because a lot of us care about the ads. It requires new archival methods though, and it’s not a responsibility to put on the userbase. It occurs to me on a related note, is Wayback Machine the only publicly available internet archive?

Here’s part of a project I’m working on! The XERE Initiative! These 2 are Xerex [it/he] (aka: 10) and Xereix [they/she] (aka: 9) and they’re the main 2 robots in the story I’m planning! I’ll release their full personalities as I get further into this but I’m really enjoying working on these prototype designs!
