Over the moon, Colorscript. 2019
✨.LUNARIA's birth. ✨ The second most important thing was to kick off Lunaria. . One key inspiration was the album cover "Dark side of the Moon" from Pink Floyd. We knew from the beginning we wanted something bold, colorful and magical - and if possible - never seen before (I really wanted to embrace the black sky through that part of the movie). The other key inspiration was the space images, that can be really close to abstraction sometimes! We would refer to Joan Miró in the future as inspiration for abstraction... . Instead of trying to design Lunaria, I try to think backward. And I came up with this little strip that will be the main direction we would follow. The idea was : instead of starting when the movie start, let's start with the last image we know of ChangE (in the tale). This image is ChangE, flying to the moon after she swallowed both immortality pills. It was my starting point. I made her arrived on the dark side of the moon, where she only found company of Jade Rabbit (other Chinese mythological figure). She was crying and crying over the loss of her true love : Houyi. As a goddess, her tears were magical. And Jade (the alchemist) will gather her tears and make a potion to create her a palace. But still, she was crying so much that her tears will ultimately become some floating clusters of energy, with time, start forming lunaria. (Like the stars are born from gaz). We would developp later the idea that all Lunaria rotate around the palace with the shape of a galaxy. . After sharing this with Glen we decided to share this story with our amazing compositers @mshelenpark @marjorieduffield @chriscurtismusic that would work their magic and include this backstory into their amazing song : "ultraluminary" . Art and music always influenced each other along the movie, it's how we got the best of each others! . Shout out to @geronimoanim who will be a key part of the development of Lunaria! . .
Over the moon. From 2d to 3d... Following the previous posts of photos of our research trip in Wuzhen, I was strucked by the houses made of wood, white walls and black tiles. It became crystal clear that we needed to find a stylisation for this. We never intended to have a photo realistic movie, and knowing that colours will have a huge part to play on Lunaria, I really wanted to embrace the colours on Earth too. So in parallel of the concepts the team was doing, I made this concept of Feifei standing in front of a white wall. It was very important for me that the vendor (SPI) nails that style really early on, because it will greatly impact the whole production. The texture artist learned to paint our style with our brushes, and soon every textures of the movie were painted. This style frame was the first image that get out of CG. (Knowing that rendering a white wall is maybe the most complex thing to do in CG, to give personality, brightness and colours!) Shout out to Sony Pictures Imageworks. .
Over the moon. Research trip, March 2018.
Before sharing some artworks, I thought I'll share with you some of the pictures I took during our research trip in Shanghai and Wuzhen. Pearl invited us to spend a week in China to discover the Chinese culture. Some of you know, that I travel a lot. So fate happened that I was already in China for a month when Glen, Gennie, Steeve, Lisa arrived in Shanghai. I met them there for a week, in March 2018. During this week, we had the pleasure to discover how to make mooncakes with a cooking class, have dinner at one of our Pearl artist's home (with her grand parents, parents and her little baby), visit Shanghai, visit two water towns : Wuzhen and Nanxun, and many other things...
