“It’s got a death curse!”
Crazy Ralph was right, it sure does. Given the date, I thought I’d subject myself to horror “classic”, Friday The 13th. I haven’t seen the film in around 9 years, partly because I’m not a fan at all and having been pretty much a life long Halloween fan, I always saw Friday for what it was: a semi professional rip off of John Carpenter’s masterpiece. I bought the Uncut Deluxe Edition on Blu-ray around 15 months ago (it was a mere $8 in Walmart!) and whilst I watched the impressive extras straight away, I just never got around to the movie. Anyway, here goes:
The kills are still impressive, Mrs Voorhees’ hilarious meltdown is still tremendous (she’s way scarier than the lumbering Jason!), that ending still works & it has a beautiful HD transfer. That’s about it for the positives. The negatives being, it’s incompetently directed, the pacing is Das Bootian, the acting is strictly am-dram, there is no discernible protagonist and there isn’t a single character to care about, not even poor Kevin Bacon in some inappropriate speedos. I could go on, as you can imagine, but I shall refrain.
Anyway, this is besides the point as Friday The 13th has no pretences about being high art, but instead just sets out to be good, dumb, bloody fun. And in those respects, I guess it succeeds and it was a legitimate cultural phenomenon. Wether or not thats a good thing, is an debate for a different time.
