I guess what I like in my movies is where you see a character change by maybe two degrees as opposed to the traditional movie change of ninety degrees. I guess that always feels false to me in movies because that doesnāt truly happen. Around me, at least in the life I live, I guess I donāt see people change ninety or a hundred degrees. I see them change in very small increments. I think itās just a monitor I might have on myself as a writer to not make any false scenes.

There was this book I read a long time ago, Gentlemen Prefer Blondesānot the movieāwhere the character, it didnāt occur to her that she wasnāt smart or that things wouldnāt work out or that men wouldnāt all do what she wanted. And she had a sort of intelligence that made her be able to get everything that she needed in a way that I didnāt understand. Like, if youāre meeting with a guy and you want him to like you, that youād have flowers delivered to yourself. Who would think of that? I would never in a million years. There are tricks that you play that work, and that amazed me, that kind of intelligence. I was also thinking about Ed Wood and the idea that he went out and did all this creative stuff, and he stunk, but it didnāt occur to him that it wasnāt good, because he was enjoying it so much. And who says that heās wrong and other people are right? We all live in our own heads, and if I go out and go, āGee, I look great today,ā whoās to say I donāt? I have the choice. I can see things one way or another.Ā
