i might just have like. an entirely new type of mutation too. the brythonic languages all have soft, aspirate, and mixed (although welsh grammar never really acknowledges the mixed one in the same way as cornish or breton do). welsh additionally has the nasal mutation, and cornish and breton both have the hard mutation. but like what if there was another one.... what would it be...

/s/ -> /z/ would be kinda cool as a soft mutation, and /dʒ/ -> /nj/ as a nasal mutation

i think it (the northern england and celtic nations thing) is a bit similar to how i view "celtic solidarity" in the context of ireland and scotland. like it's fine to be like "solidarity between oppressed peoples" but when one of those nations also colonised the other one it's a bit like. i think some work has to be done first. some things have to be considered carefully. scotland doesn't get excused from colonising ireland because they also have a celtic language and also were also colonised by the english.

#sorry i just saw an awful article from liberation scotland claiming that scotland was never a coloniser what the hell #did you know scotland is both. and so are most of the other celtic nations (although i'm not so familiar with manx or breton history)#the article brought up the colonisation of ireland to compare it to scotland without mentioning that it was england AND scotland who -#- colonised ireland

seeing a lot of annoying takes on northern england and the celtic nations in the uk because of andy burnham and i fear this will continue

ok do i need to do sound changes for like:

common brittonic > old period of my con-lang > middle period > modern period

and then i can start working on the vocabulary and grammar for the modern period. or do i need to make the vocab/grammar for the old and middle periods too before i get to the modern period

starting on the brythonic conlang today... idk really how to start with a conlang so i'm writing down all the phonemes and the letters that represent them in welsh, cornish, and breton and then like... i'll somehow work out which ones to put in my language

the fact that i'm finding the intermediate welsh workbook so easy, especially in comparison the the irish one, is comforting

need to find something interesting to do with irish later, i have not felt like sitting down in front of a grammar workbook at all recently, which is usually my favourite thing. maybe i should try and read something, or write something. i just need to do something fresh because i've been feeling a bit low since the TEG results and also just low in general in regards to language learning since like. idk october.

the situation with cornish feels so bad sometimes that i'm getting to the point where i don't really trust non-cornish people to be normal about it

#checked the celtic languages discord server for the first time in a while #only to see the cornish channel filled with a conversation about how therw are apparently no native speakers #and none of them had ever met a fluent speaker #like?? i know native speakers and fluent speakers.#people are being raised with cornish....#you're not active in the cornish language community at all are you.#even in celtic studies/languages spaces people talk about us lile we're not here or like we don't exist #(i'm using 'we' to include myself as cornish diaspora. not a fluent or native speaker. although fluent in the future hopefully...)#also like i'm pretty sure the CL server alienated all the fluent cornish speakers who were in it and they all left #anyway.#i left the server but i had been thinking about it before already

i failed the overall TEG exam but i passed the oral part so i think i can still get partial certification

#i'm actually really upset :(#it was a hard exam and very different to university exams but i honestly thought i did ok??#i'm surprised i passed the oral but not the written considering i hate oral exams so much #it costs €150 to appeal the exam results lol i don't have the money. i will not be doing that.#the course already cost me €100 and the exam cost €170 to take. i am not spending another €150 when they will probably still -#- decide that it's a fail #i'm really upset with myself i thought i did enough to pass #gaeilge

Did you know that -igh is pronounced differently in every dialect of Irish?

This can confuse people a lot when they're learning verbs, especially when they're taught with a mix of the dialects but each dialect is quite internally consistent with it.

This also applies to -idh as slender dh and slender gh have merged in every dialect.

In Connacht these are entirely silent, so in an unstressed syllable they're just pronounced like a schwa, a neutral vowel.

Cheannaigh (bought) -> Cheanna

Bhailigh (collected) -> Bhaile

Cuirfidh (will put) -> Cuirhe

Samhraidh (of summer) -> Samhra

In Ulster and Munster, the pronounciation is also a schwa when it is a verb form before a pronoun:

Cheannaigh sé (He bought) -> Cheanna sé

Cuirfidh sé (He will put) -> Cuirhe sé

But, if it isn't before a pronoun then it is pronounced like 'í' in Ulster and like 'ig' in Munster.

Cheannaigh Seán -> Cheannaí Seán (Ulster), Cheannaig Seán (Munster)

Nigh (Wash) -> Ní (Ulster), Nig (Munster)

Samhraidh -> Samhraí (Ulster), Samhraig (Munster)
