Une rentrée pas comme les autres

La semaine dernière, nous avons clôturé un projet que nous avions démarré il y a environ deux ans. Ce fût un projet très enrichissant, découpé en de nombreuses étapes, où nous avons pu expérimenter de multiples méthodes de travail et tout cela dans un cadre unique. Par cadre, nous entendons la relation avec le client et ses équipes de travail.

Et si cet article n'apparaît qu'aujourd'hui, soit une semaine après la remise du projet, c'est parce qu'il est nécessaire de se donner un certains temps pour le clôturer, tout du moins intellectuellement. Comme toute rupture – car il s'agit bien de rupture: rupture dans votre organisation, rupture dans votre approche du travail, rupture dans l'énergie que vous y avez mis – il faut un certains temps pour s'en remettre. Vous faites le point et repassez ces deux dernières années en mémoire. Vous rejetez un œil sur le tout premier prototype et remontez la chronologie du projet. Et vous en tirez des enseignements.

Evidemment, vous ne pouvez résister à l'envie de vous dire que ceci ou cela aurait pu faire l'objet d'une autre approche, ou que cette autre partie est encore trop compliquée. Vous pensez aussi que vous auriez dû être plus convaincant lors de cette argumentation où n'avez pas réussi à "faire passer votre proposition". Mais le contexte, à ce moment là, n'était peut être pas le bon. Si vous rediscutiez ce point aujourd'hui, ce serait peut être différent. Pourquoi? Parce que lors d'un projet aussi long, les équipes évoluent, au moins autant que le projet. Elles anticipent, étendent leur vision, perfectionnent leurs méthodologies et expérimentent.

Il y a un autre point sur lequel vous revenez. C'est votre apprentissage. En quoi ce projet a consolidé votre expérience et comment cela se traduit dans votre travail à présent?

Le projet était principalement porté sur l'expérience utilisateur (UX design). Je vais donc faire une parenthèse ici pour que vous compreniez ô combien cette discipline a pu évoluer ces deux dernières années. Elle est apparue comme une discipline à part entière, indispensable à tout projet, permettant aux designers d'hisser la qualité de leur travail à un niveau supérieur et au client de mieux appréhender l'enjeux de leur solicitations. Travailler deux ans en grande partie sur l'UX à travers des prototypes était inenvisageable il y a encore quelques années. Le marché n'était pas prêt.

Donc, pour revenir à cet apprentissage, sachez qu'il est difficilement quantifiable. Il ne s'agit pas tellement de votre capacité à approfondir vos connaissances techniques (cela se fait, immanquablement, à travers chaque projet) mais plutôt votre aptitude à identifier un problème, à l'étudier, à expérimenter, à trouver une ou plusieurs solutions et, quelquefois, à défaire ce que vous avez construit pour tout recommencer. C'est cela le vecteur principal de nos réalisations. Ce vecteur, pointé vers la qualité, est sans cesse alimenté par des personnes passionées. Et c'est ce dernier ingrédient qui motive les projets sur le long terme et consolide nos exigences élevées.

Cette semaine c'était aussi la rentrée. Ce moment où vous regardez ce qui a été fait jusqu'a présent et où, ressourcé et plein d'énergie, vous êtes impatient d'attaquer votre prochain projet pour pouvoir y appliquer tous les enseignements de vos précédentes réalisations.

Pour certains, notamment ceux qui ont travaillé sur ce long projet, c'est une rentrée après deux ans de travail. Et, plus que jamais, l'envie pour eux de mettre en oeuvre tout ce qu'ils y ont acquis.

Week 30: National Holiday, Proposals and Walking Sticks

Week 30, what a short week was that?

On Monday we had Belgium's National Day, celebrating it in sunny Brussels. So only 3 days left in our 32-hour work week.

Sarah and Pascal have been finalising a couple of project proposals. This is supposed to be a calm and quiet period for design offices, but it looks it's going to be a pretty busy one for us. We'll not complain :)

David is back from his holidays on the Belgian Coast. Tanned and re-energised is playing visual design ping-pong with Quentin, on the pages for an ambitious Belgian start-up we're working with.

Valentin came back from Dour Festival. After a 16hours sleep on Monday, he is back and kicking.

Loucas has a break from his Bootstrap prototype he had been working for the last 3 weeks and now is working on the team-profile for SMart Agora. A nice little exercise.

Geoffroy is continuing his holidays in South of France. From his Instagram account we know he went to a wedding and that he looked pretty chic ( he's going to hate us for posting it here :P ).

In the meanwhile, we're taking care of Adrien's and Arthur's little pets; sticks or walking-sticks in Flemish.

Build, Simplify, Repeat

Remember playing with legos? You took different colors, added different pieces, than removed some. Then your little sister added hers and you tried to figure out how your buildings fit together, what you could build together.

Our week felt a lot like this.

All week David deconstructed what he’d been building for our still secret Central project. He worked on his own, his head down behind a screen with pages full of code. He was, as he said “un-building to build better”.

During this time, Pascal setup Blossom, a tool for project management that we’re testing out on one of our projects. We’re hoping it will allow us to collaborate more cross-functionally and visualize task progress. In other colorful news, big news for the cyclist that I am, Pascal got himself s stunning vintage blue Peugeot bicycle! Merci Hush Rush!

Loucas put pen to paper to build user stories before Pascal and he could map them out together on the wall. Once our client gave feedback and priorities, these cards were moved, literally on the wall, Pascal added them to Blossom and Loucas continued the digital prototyping.

Following our retreat, we continued reflecting and building on what we did in the woods. I ran an intro to MBTI session over lunch and we discovered that I’m not only the only chick in the team, I’m also the only extrovert, and hooray we have a good mix of other preferences to satisfy our clients and project styles!

The lads also allowed me to experiment with an intention building exercise I’d wanted to try forever. They went a long with it while I had a nervous fit of laughter. I promised them that if it didn’t work by September I’d get them dinner - I sure hope it does! I left feeling grateful that I work in a place where I can explore different concepts and express my quirky side.

On Friday, we finished the week with a brunch and build to work on our website. It’s an experiment in the making, a wish to have something out in the world that makes sense and explains what we do. We’re counting the hours as we’ve decided to publish as is, whatever is done in the coming days. Like us, it may not be perfect, but it will be authentic and honest.

Back to client work after our retreat. To be honest the retreat was so immersive that it was a bit hard to reconnect with the projects come Monday morning.

Following our usual Monday project check-in we put all the results from the workshop we did during the retreat on the walls and shared it with the ones that hadn't been able to make it. Then we defined follow-up actions, which means that you'll probably hear more from us in the coming weeks!

Loucas started to prototype new Proxyclick’s project in duo with Sarah for the content. It started with a creative workshop with Proxyclick’s team to setup the story from the customers interviews we did earlier.

No surprise, everybody left the office by 18:00 on Tuesday to watch the Red Devils play. Go go Belgium!

We were also very happy to have a visit from Pierre, he was in intern at Central a few months ago. He had just passed his final exam and was waiting for the results. In the meantime, we have learnt that he passed and with honors! Bonne route Pierre!

The week ended with the delivery of the table and chairs for our kitchen-meeting-room. Finally! We purchased the table 6 months ago and it was delayed every week since. Its a good thing we don't deliver like that to our customers!

16.06.2013 - Into the Wild

It’s been a few days since we’ve come back from our team retreat, back from the wild.

I should have remembered that there are trips that take time to come back from. That spending time in the forest without phones, internet or Instagram, away from our families, and out of our comfort zones would be transformative.

Of course we had a plan, an overambitious list of basecamp to-dos of things we wanted to cover, a wish list of games, of recipes we’d try. We also had an intention, to reflect on our identity, our vision and how we each fit in that master plan, cause if three is a crowd, what were we now that we were seven, a Central mission?

So into the wild, there were birds - plenty of them - singing, feeding and even saved.

There was food. Geoffroy shared his now not-so-secret talent for bread making. He showed us and we imitated his way to care for the yeast, to knead the dough, to let it sit and watch it rise. And hours later, we enjoyed it together and it was seriously the best bread I have ever tasted!

There were bbqs started, slowly, for feasts that were enjoyed even more slowly. Quentin impressed with his mastery of meat and homemade sauces to go with it.

There were packets full of post-its - scribbled, exchanged, moved.

Loucas lead a workshop around our who, what, why inspired from Groove’s post and worksheet. We first reflected individually then post-ited our thoughts for the group, then rated all our ideas with sticky dots. The post-its that got votes were keepers.

What was most revealing was that we had plenty of keepers. For a value-driven agency our personal values were certainly aligned.

I ran a session that I’d recently run with a client using archetypes for building vision and story. I was thrilled to finally bring one of the tools I love most to team Central. Again, it was fascinating to have such similar ideas.

There were also plenty of moments just sitting in the grass, reading, talking.

And rituals we instantly created of morning coffees watching the lake...

and evenings sharing games.

I'm not sure we realised how much we would enjoy the experience, how much ground we would actually cover, how much we would actually discover about each other and about ourselves. What’s certain is that we’re all excited to soon build on this experience. In the comings days and weeks we will be sharing with you the outcomes of our retreat. More to come then!

Before another week goes by, the Netherlands win the World Cup and the summer sun eventually makes me forget everything I still remember, here’s what happened last week… Two new pieces of furniture hacked by Geoffroy made their appearance in the office. They’re so gorgeous they would make any neo-modernist Scandinavian designer jealous.

Quentin took a deep breath and jumped into the SMart projects to be finished this month: the much-awaited activity management tools and the new Agora (for which Valentin coded some features that will surely make Medium look like GeoCities). Sarah returned from a week in the Israeli desert with even more energy than before she left… Just what she needed to lead another workshop with our new (soon to be huge) startup client.

Loucas interviewed, prototyped, interviewed again and found time to write another great article on SMart Agora’s blog.

Between some updates of the European SMart portal, I continued to work on our top-secret iPhone application that we hope to release to the world very soon. I said top-secret, so that’s all folks… ;-)

Hello!

La semaine dernière fût courte, le jeudi étant un jour férié. Pour autant, les trois jours de la semaine furent chargés. En effet, nous sommes dans la dernière ligne droite concernant un certain nombre de projets pour SMart.

Ainsi, Valentin a continué à travailler sur l'intégration de pages pour les nouveaux outils Agora pour SMart alors que je terminais le design de certains éléments. Si la structure du projet est en place, nous mettons un point d'honneur à peaufiner ce qui peut encore l'être. Tout est dans les détails et l'expérience. Par ailleurs, Geoffroy a expérimenté de nouvelles structures de contenu sur la page profile. En effet, bien que fonctionnelle en l'état, c'est une partie que nous pensons pouvoir rendre plus attrayante.

Parallèlement, le prototypage des nouveaux outils de gestion des activités SMart arrive à la fin d'un chapitre. Les deux derniers défis ont été la mise en place d'un outil de communication interne et un système d'échelonnage de facture. La semaine prochaine sera axée sur le travail de copy par Sarah (en vacance dans le désert cette semaine) et sur la livraison du prototype au client, ce qui marque une étape importante du projet.

David a pour sa part travaillé sur notre future application iPhone que nous gardons secrète pour le moment. Tout ce que nous pouvons dire, c'est qu'une petite démo en interne a été faite, pour le plus grand plaisir de l'équipe. Loucas à quant à lui débuté un nouveau projet pour client et sur lequel nous reviendrons dans les prochaines semaines.

Par ailleurs, Pascal s'est renseigné sur des nouveaux outils de gestion de tâches, notamment Blossom. L'idée n'est pas de remplacer notre fidèle Basecamp, mais de trouver des outils complémentaires et qui peuvent être plus à même de répondre à notre manière d'assigner et d'ordonner des tâches.

Notre semaine au vert se prépare avec la location d'un gîte en bord de lac, sans wifi s'il vous plaît :) Ce sera l'occasion d'approcher quelques nouvelles méthodes de travail dans une ambiance conviviale.

La semaine se termine avec l'achat de mobilier et matériel pour le bureau par Geoffroy, qui a eu le courage de passer un vendredi matin chez un célèbre revendeur suédois de meubles en kit et de boulettes :)

Cette semaine était la dernière de Romain Poirier qui était en stage chez nous. Nous avions déjà eu l'occasion de travailler avec Romain en tant que client, il était alors project manager chez Getyoo et était notre interlocuteur lorsque nous travaillions sur leur nouveau site marketing. Depuis il s'est réorienté dans le design et développement web et nous l'avons donc accueilli pour un court stage à la fin de sa formation. Comme avec tous les stagiaires qui passent ici, il a tenu un journal de ces semaines quelques passées chez Central. Bonne route Romain!

Sarah a animé un workshop dans le cadre du nouveau positionnement de la marque produit d'un client offrant des solutions saas. Ce workshop, basé sur les archétypes, permet de définir les attributs, les traits, les valeurs et la vision du produit. Il s'agit d'un travail préliminaire à la réalisation du site qui présentera le produit et permettra de s'y abonner.

Grâce à Skype Loucas a réalisé pour ce même projet une série d'interviews des clients actuels de ce produit aux Etats-Unis et en Europe. Il complète ainsi les personas et la recherche sur les utilisateurs avant de commencer à réaliser les premiers wireframes.

Pendant ce temps Quentin et Valentin se sont concentrés sur la finalisation du module de publication des nouveaux outils Agora pour SMart. Ils ont du faire face à quelques challenges pour arriver à la simplicité d'utilisation que nous souhaitions atteindre. Il nous reste maintenant deux semaines pour peaufiner certaines interactions avant de fournir le matériel à l'équipe de développement.

David a procédé a quelques ajustements sur Debating Europe dans le cadre des élections européennes (quand il n'était pas entrain de coder notre application pour iPhone qui ******* *** ***** ******** :-)

Quant à moi, en plus de collaborer sur design des différents projets et d'effectuer un peu de suivi commercial avec l'aide de Pascal, j'essaie d'organiser en dernière minute une escapade au vert avec toute l'équipe. Nous avions prévu à l'origine de nous rendre à Ready to Inspire à Leiden, mais nous venons d'apprendre en dernière minute que l'événement est annulé :-/. À la place nous cherchons un espace au vert pour prendre un peu de recul sur nos projets et notre manière de travailler pendant quelques jours.
