Ive had this boy for a long time, but finally he at least gets to be drawn. I think for my characters of splatoon i’ll keep a food naming convention considering Mello, i.e. marshmellow, Suika (watermelon)

Cephalopod Musings

1.) if Inkling “ears” are their fins in squid form, then ear shape and fin shape should be roughly similar, and any modification to the ears should be reflected on the squib fins

2.) Nintendo wanted Octoling “ears” to be One Siphon and… a mystery structure? Do they breathe from their ears? What is that other “ear” structure on the non siphon side? Anyways instead of dealing with these questions I have given Octos Littol Fins, because the Splat Bio inkfish evolution is like this

A few school-related headcanons:

Inkling primary school starts at around age 4-6. It basically functions the same way as grade school does in human society, encompassing kindergarten up to roughly the beginning of high school. It stops at age 14, and after that Inklings can begin to move out, get jobs, and start their own lives.

Further schooling is optional, and many Inklings just stop attending at this point. But some choose to continue into secondary/high school. It sorta blends in with what we’d consider college-level education as you go further up, being optional higher education (that really anyone could go to at any point in their lives). Some more specialized schools, such as Inkblot Art Academy, also exist for those interested.

Meanwhile in Octaria: military/engineer-class Octolings go through mandatory military academy training starting ~5-6. Working-class Octolings go through basic education, then some specific training before being dumped into the workforce. Thus, Octolings tend to be knowledgeable at weaponry, engineering, math, and technology, but not so much at everything else. Upon arrival in Inkopolis, many Octolings opted to go back to school to pick up what they missed in Octarian state-run training.

i feel like a lot more of the octo expansion is symbolic than literal. we know that the metro, although real, is displaced from reality, but that also feels like.. a direct reference to the idea of it serving as a liminal space between the underground and inkopolis

everyone whos stuck on the metro is stuck at an impasse. i like to think of it as like….. rediscovery of ones identity? like…. the characters you talk to are all quite literally, but also very much so metaphorically STUCK in the space before self-discovery. iso padre has given up aaages ago. the sanitized octolings are incapable of growth. all the other passengers are floating along in menial, impersonal schedules just like commuters, and like them they refuse to interact with others. theyre too absorbed in constantly moving from place to place with little thought on where theyre going. everyones lost. id argue theyre lost forever

and i guess then you could argue that c q cumber is like a guide of sorts. the challenges push you to your limits so you can finally recreate yourself, and reach a point of accepting where you are in life, specifically along with accepting your past, however harrowing it may have been, because youve been through so much and accomplished so much to get there.

but this is also controlled by tartar, whos molded this whole experience to an evil. there is no promised land awaiting. eight has to construct it for themself. the promise of a perfect future ‘if you just come with me’ is definitely shady at the very best and, most commonly, very evil. unrelated but i think thats a good mini lesson because self help stuff is so often WACK

im getting away from what im trying to say though. imo the events of octo expansion are definitely REAL, but in the sense that the metro isnt truly ‘real’, it is also a form of a heros trial. we dont need everything to be backed by the rules of a real world because this is a video game, and the octo expansion sits on the lines between reality and symbolism just like i feel the metro does.

and i probably wouldnt believe any of the stuff im saying right now if it werent for the fight with inner agent 3? because that whole concept and its execution is so HEAVILY steeped in the idea of real-but-not-real and the idea of conquering personal challenges. eight is reliving a memory, but specifically one thats been warped by recent events and this deep seated need to overcome their INNER agent 3. their inner demon. it is, once again, a challenge to find yourself.

theres also the fact that youre expected to keep coming back, because you could essentially just beat all the levels necessary to collect the thangs and then escape, but there are still MORE levels. youre not done until youre done. you havent recollected every memory from your past life until youve gone back and done everything. and only after youve come to terms with all of that can you really take on the biggest thing: yourself.

anyways sanitized octolings are just following orders and incapable of doing more at least from what we know in canon which means they cant reach peace and i think thats very sad of nintendo

but yeah imo the metro is just as much of a symbolic space as it is a half-real space. im going to shut up now unless i get more dumb ideas in which case im sorry
