*Job* Water Quality Outreach Specialist
Pierce Conservation District is looking for an AmeriCorps member to serve as a Water Quality Outreach Specialist from September 2016 through July 2017.
ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
The Pierce Conservation District works with local landowners and public agencies to conserve natural resources that are essential to both our economy and our region’s quality of life. Our collaborative efforts with citizen volunteers to create a just food system, improve water quality, promote sustainable agriculture, and recover wildlife habitat, is the heart of our mission.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Water Quality Outreach Specialist will report directly to the Water Quality Director to increase stream health knowledge and positive behavior change through action projects, workshops, trainings, and community outreach. Over the internship the Outreach Specialist will work directly with many District programs to develop and implement improvements in participant knowledge and behavior change by taking part in our programs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Project Management/Capacity Building
Lead Streamside Planting events with community volunteers
Attend community meetings to share District program opportunities
Host workshops to share District program opportunities
Develop and implement pre- and post-surveys for targeted District projects
Stream monitoring kit cleaning, pick-up, and drop-off to ensure volunteers can monitor the health of our local streams as needed
Conduct (or assist with) re-vegetation monitoring
Support different educational opportunities such as the Children’s Water Festival, Chum Festival, Envirothon and other educational experiences as requested
Develop outreach materials and promote educational workshops
Write Tahoma View newsletter articles as assigned
Professional Development:
Research and attend trainings to further personal professional development in the field of Member’s choosing
Assist with small grant writing
Attend meetings as a representative of the district and network with environmental community
Other tasks to be assigned based on Member’s interest
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Required:
Age 18 to 25
College graduate
Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities
Excellent organization, including event and meeting planning and facilitation, data tracking, and report writing
Self-starter, ability to work well independently
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Comfortable talking with strangers and groups
Ability to understand and communicate a variety of natural resource topics
Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
Strong attention to detail and excellent word, excel, and PowerPoint skills
Availability for evenings and weekends
Vehicle and valid driver’s license
Preferred:
College degree
Knowledge of Pierce County area and community
Experience in data collection and analysis
COMPENSATION
Monthly stipend of $1,195
Education award of $5,775 upon completion of service

Environmental Protection Agency Region 10 (Seattle Office) has a digital eInternship Teaching Environmental Education (ECOLEARN) Lesson Plans at elementary schools. As a eIntern, you will get to teach exciting, already prepared environmental education lesson plans at local elementary schools. The Internship Experience Program (IEP) is for current students enrolled in a qualifying academic program. These appointments are non-temporary and are expected to last the length of the academic program for which the intern is enrolled. IEP participants, while in the program, are eligible for noncompetitive promotions.
This program allows for non-competitive conversion into the competitive service following successful completion of all program requirements. Veteran’s preference applies. So consider a Pathways internship with the U.S. Department of State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S. diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy initiatives.

*Course* Soc W 558: Gender, Gender Identity & Sexuality
Through an anti-oppression lens, this course focuses on social work practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, two-spirit, intersexed and queer communities. Emphasis in the course is placed on the self-awareness of one's own cultural, social, and political context/identities within which such practice occurs, as well as an examination of the diversity and heterogeneity within these communities. Students will enhance micro and macro practice skills regarding identity development, coming-out, and working with LGBTTSIQ youth, elders and families, queer social movements and policy organizing. The course will examine the role of multiple social identities as well as multicultural and multigenerational life span development. The course will deepen the knowledge and skills necessary for self-aware, affirming, empowering, and effective practice furthering movements for collective liberation. UW Tacoma’s Urban Studies program and the Office of International Programs are pleased to introduce a field course abroad to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The program will immerse participants in the urban landscape of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Using site visits, guest lectures, and group activities, students will be exposed to the city’s current political, economic and cultural reality. Over the 4-week period, students will acquire a broad knowledge base of the evolving economic, political, cultural, and social forces that are constituted in and reverberate across the city in current global and neoliberal times.
Sound Transit's Planning, Environment, and Project Development (PEPD) Department plans, develops and designs regional transit projects and systems in a fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable manner to foster livable, transit-supportive communities. This Internship is within PEPD's Office of Planning and Development and supports a full range of research and policy development activities to frame issues and choices to guide the planning, building, and operation of the regional high capacity transit system. Some recent areas of work include: transit performance monitoring, transit fare payment methods and media, ridership market analysis, business development and revenue generation, emerging technologies, and support activities for transit system planning.
