Reading Sunrise on the Reaping really puts Catching Fire in a whole other light. I no longer think the envelope was fabricated because of Katniss, it was probably made years ago when the number of victors who were willing and able to rebel against the Capitol grew.

In fact I don’t think Snow even necessarily wanted Peeta in the games, he didn’t care too much either way, cause Katniss and Haymitch would suffer no matter what, but I think he’d prefer Haymitch dead. Add to that the number of victors who said something rebellious during their interview? The chain of hands? Yeah the quarter quell was a way of getting rid of the threats, of gutting the rebellion. Only reason it failed is because Snow didn’t see Plutarch coming.

It just made it even more clear how Katniss wasn’t special, she was just in the right place at the right time, and how each of the other victors had done as much, maybe even more, but failed to get as much success.

Something about the hunger games universe really hit me after reading SotR: The games are really personal for Snow.

In the original trilogy I got the sense that Katniss’s games were personal to him because she was rebellious, then TBoSaS came along and added context to why those games, and Katniss specifically, mattered so much to him.

I figured he cared about the games in general after that, but it just never hit how much of that was personal until his conversation with Haymitch when he brings up Lucy Gray. This man just wanted to prove to himself that anyone would have killed Bobbin in the arena, would’ve shot Mayfair, would’ve reported Sejanus. He needs to prove that everyone will choose self preservation if it come down to it. All of it so he can tell himself that since his actions were normal, Lucy Gray was wrong to leave, that she had no reason to flee him.

Then he watched year after year, decade after decade when tributes choose to be kind instead of cruel and he can’t take it. He wants to tell himself Lucy Gray had no just cause to leave, and he needs these children to prove that but they just won’t. He wants Covey women to be evil manipulative witches, but they just aren’t. He wants all love to be little more than a lie but it isn’t. Coriolanus is a horrible person who was using the Hunger Games to prove to himself that he is not, and he fails.

Side note: re-read the original trilogy after, and am shocked at how many of his actions feel like toddler’s temper tantrum taken to extremes.

Trump has been president before and the United States is still standing. This is not going to be good, but stick together, be kind to each other, we’ll make it through.

I know we’re scared, especially queer people, but we’ve faced worse and come out the other side. We exist, no matter what Trump or the GOP have to say about it, we exist now, just as we did 50 years ago, and we will continue to exist 50 years from now.

Whatever you do, don’t stop fighting. There’s nothing the right wants more than to make you defeatist and hopeless. Kamala winning wasn’t going to save democracy and Trump winning isn’t going to end it. Your task remains to be engaged with your local community, never let your representatives have a moment of peace, and pay attention to everything.

this is the one art form I genuinely just cannot get my brain to accept as real. I’ve watched sped-up videos of it being done, read about it, seen in-progress marble statues and I still just can’t get it to sink in or stick. My mind doesn’t want to believe that any person has ever been able to start with a big block and break little bits off of it until it looks like a finely detailed person. At some point it has no recognizable shape and they still know where and how deep they should take a chip out of it that’ll still be the right decision 50,000 fucking chips later?!?
