Staff Review - The Hobbit Trilogy

When I began to watch the trilogy, starting of course with An Unexpected Journey, I thought that it seemed to be a very slow childish version of Lord Of the Rings; although I did enjoy it, I thirsted for more action.

The arrival of The Desolation Of Smaug did not leave me disappointed. The characters quickly gained more depth and the addition of more characters quickly ramped up the action. The second installment of The Hobbit, is my favourite out of the three, and I would say that I've seen it at least twenty times since it's release in 2013.

A very long year passed as I waited for what I anticipated to be the best film of 2014, and I was not disappointed. I sat, palms sweating, at the midnight showing of Battle Of The Five Armies, filled with excitement for how the final installment was going to end; what would happen? I had no idea. This was the shortest of all of the films in the Lord Of The Rings series, which means that everything, action, story, emotion and all, were tightly packed into just 2 hours and 40 minutes. Finally watching the dramatic finale of this fantastic story was amazing; shedding that final tear, laugh and subtle fist pump (generally when everyone's favourite Elf is kicking ass!). I for one can't wait to watch it again and again; and also for the extended boxset to be released! If you haven't watched The Hobbit series yet, start today, you will fall in love with it as I did!

Based on a short story of the same name, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a fantastic and sometimes hilarious insight into the interactions between people and there everyday life. Starring Ben Stiller it has been nominated for 9 awards and won 6. For only £5 this makes a fantastic rainy day, feel-good film.

Staff Pick - PS3 Super Slim 500GB

If you're looking to get into gaming without paying the next gen price tag then look no further than Sony's PS3 Super Slim. With  a huge internal hard drive, wide accompaniment of games and accessories and Sony promising support of the PS3 up until the end of 2015 (2016 if they stick to their 10 year promise) it's the perfect console for the price conscious enthusiast.

Whilst there why don't you consider picking up the PS3 exclusive series 'Resistance' set in a thrilling post apocalyptic universe with great immersive game play it makes a brilliant play with a great story line to boot.

Staff Pick - Waze

Have you ever fallen foul of maps that aren't up to date in other navigation apps? We all have and Waze intends to put this to an end. Created as a 'not-for-profit' app it allows its community of users to edit and update the map as necessary. Waze also uses real time traffic data from many sources including it's logged in users to continuously update it's set routes to take advantage of less congested routes. Finally Waze allows its users to flag things on the map which may be useful to other drivers, these include road works, hidden police traps, speed cameras and map inaccuracies. These allow editors to come back and change the map to better reflect how the road actually works. Although in it's infancy, Waze looks like a promising solution to navigating our ever changing road network.

Staff Review - Galaxy Gear

Intro

Verdict Whilst many people will dismiss the Gear as gimmicky and a fad I feel that those who don't give it a chance will be missing out. As Samsung's first high profile venture into this rapidly expanding market the Gear gives the impression of being well designed, well realised and well built. With an interface that is easy to use and a number of useful features to satisfy consumers the Gear is a solid offering and good platform from which to launch the rest of the Gear series of wearable’s.
