It wasn’t often that Dex was blindsided by a creature that intended to attack. Usually, it was him who went undetected by his target. His skills as a hunter were unmatched, but presumably those skills were like a muscle and the less he used them, the more withered they became.
His ignorance for his surroundings and his reluctance to continue hunting had made him clumsy. He wasn’t as in tune with sounds and scents any longer, nor was he alert for danger. He hadn’t anticipated the vampire attack, as the frame collided with his own in the middle of the woodland and fangs penetrated the soft flesh.
There had been an initial struggle, Dex’s eyes having manipulated to their wolf yellow as his own fangs protruded and he administered the lethal bite to the being. It hadn’t taken much for him to reach for his knife – something of which he continued to carry – before he drove it into the chest of the vampire. The aftermath was going to be difficult to explain. Dex was motionless, cloaked by crimson as the vampire had managed to break his skin a few times, staining his flesh and clothing. His chest was heaving as he clutched the body of the now deceased vampire, before rolling its frame off of his own and slowly sitting himself upright.
Cordelia stood frozen near the trees, clinging to Pedro and keeping his face buried in her chest and cradling the back of his head to keep him from seeing the bloodied man. Slowly she knelt down and sat Pedro on the ground, they weren’t far from home, the entrance to their garden still visible. “Sé bueno con mamá y vuelve corriendo a casa, entra por la puerta del jardín y entra. Espérame en tu habitación.” She said softly as she smiled at him. She guided him towards the garden, making sure he didn’t turn back and made it through the gate and back door safely.
Finally she turned her gaze back to the stranger, not inching any closer just in case. “Are you okay?” She asked, her gaze falling to the slain vampire. She had witnessed the attack, afraid to get involved with Pedro so close and her unborn child.
