Jack’s Neckties by Episode

After visualizing Jack’s ties by season, by number of episodes and by wardrobe mixups, we finally arrive at the (probably) final entry of this tie-focused series of posts. Today, let’s check a tie-wise overview of each episode of the series.

Each graph shows the ties worn in each episode, ordered by screen appearance, from bottom to top. There is a very strong correlation between the number of different outfits Jack wears with the number of days of each investigation, so these graphs can also show us the span of time of each episode.

Again, huge thanks to @foxspirit1928 for the posts showing each tie worn per episode!! And if you are confused about the names of each tie, please check my other post.

Season 1

Notice how in The Green Mill Murder (S1E3) and Death at Victoria Dock (S1E4) Jack wears the exact same ties in the same order. I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe in coincidences. 𝓹𝓵𝓪𝔂 𝔁-𝓯𝓲𝓵𝓮𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓶𝓮

The “Beige Tie” appears quite frequently in the final scenes of the show, while the “Striped Tie” seems to be more commonly used in the middle of the episode. It’s also interesting to note that in the last episode of the season Jack uses the same tie twice, although in different suits. This only ever happens again in continuity errors (which I chose not to show in these graphs as it would disrupt the visualization, but if you are interested you can check them here ).

Season 2

We can clearly see how in season 2 Jack seems to start the investigation in darker blue ties and end the episode (usually in Phryne’s parlour) in his “Maroon Tie” or “Beige Tie”. One exception is the golden tie he wears in Dead Air (S2E11), when he is undercover. He also wears a special tie during his time on the 𝔪𝔲𝔯𝔡𝔢𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔰 ℭ𝔥𝔯𝔦𝔰𝔱𝔪𝔞𝔰 𝔠𝔞𝔯𝔬𝔩 𝔢𝔭𝔦𝔰𝔬𝔡𝔢 (S2E13) and a very random tie on Blood of Juana the Mad (S2E8) that never appeared again.

Season 3

In season 3 we have a strong prevalence of blue and a great variety in styles, with many new ties being introduced. It’s interesting to note that, after the first episode where the “Rather Nice Tie” is introduced and Phryne mentions how much she likes it, Jack is only seen using it in the final scenes of the show, usually private moments with her.

It’s also interesting to note that the “Diamond Striped Tie” is mainly a mid-episode tie both in season 1 and 2, but in season 3 is worn in the final moments of the show.

Nathan Page - Cyclist

kalerider and I did our best to find photographs of Nathan at these championships. I wrote to The Australian Sports Commission who said that their image archive did date back to the early 1980s but the Cycling archives during 1988 and 89 were lacking and so they had no images of Nathan.

Nor did Cycling News - too early for them

He rode alongside Lance Armstrong in Europe and attended the Australian Institute of Sport with Stuart O'Grady, but Page says he gave up his dreams at 19 because he was one of only a few cyclists on the European tour determined to stay clean. “It was an era that was plagued by drugs and it was very hard to see your way through to a long career… but because I stayed clean, you could beat them some of the time, but not all of the time” says Page, now 40. ’‘I think Australia was really pretty good, particularly the Institute of Sport. You had a buffer … but once you moved to Europe it was a different thing altogether. The road circuit was a pretty dirty world and it’s only just coming out of it now.”

Page, who broke a junior world record on the cycling track, says: “In the end I just remember being in Moscow, just being in tears, just thinking, ‘I know I’m that fast, the amount of work that’s gone in, I’m so close, but these guys are on massive amounts of steroids and EPO and you simply can’t compete.“

This is a very short glimpse of the rear view of Nathan on a bike but watch how he turns back after the crash to check that everyone is OK.

INTERVIEW WITH NATHAN PAGE IN SEPTEMBER 2013

WELCOME NATHAN PAGE

Good evening, how are you?

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR LATEST ROLE IN SQUIZZY WHICH IS OUT ON DVD

Thanks very much. It’s not my first Underbelly role. I can’t remember the date I did the first but it was the second series and I played a character called Ray Chuck. Set in the 70s. This is a completely different look, completely different character. It’s fun to mix it up for sure.

IT WAS ALSO KNOWN AS A TALE OF TWO T**TIES; THERE WAS QUITE A LOT OF NIPPLE ACTION

Yeah, everyone’s except mine.

IN SQUIZZY YOU HAD SIDE LEVERS – IT’S A GOOD LOOK, IS IT SOMETHING YOU’RE GOING TO MAINTAIN?

No, I don’t think so. It’s funny because originally they had offered me the part of a Detective Inspector and I’m playing the part of a Detective Inspector in MFMM. I’ve just finished shooting a second season and of course it’s in the same kind of era. I was concerned that I would look the same, be asking questions. MFMM is about to start, air on TV on Friday night and Squizzy has just finished so I wanted a completely different look so they offered me the Stokes character, but I said yeah but I got to look really different. Yeah, yeah they said, some facial hair. How long does it take you to grow a beard? – I said I don’t know – a while – so they did this thing called ‘flocking’ which I’d never heard of before. You hold a magnet and a spoon and they basically shoot this synthetic hair at your face which has glue on it so it all stands on end – you actually look like a GI Joe. Looks a bit odd at first. I didn’t have time to grow the beard so that’s what we did at first – until I grew it.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO THIS MFMM – MORE OF YOU ON THE SMALL SCREEN.

Well it’s a beautiful series, beautifully shot. That one starts on Friday night. It has a massive following overseas, particularly France. The books are very popular as well.

MEANWHILE ON DVD IS UNDERBELLY SQUIZZY WITH A WONDERFUL CAST – YOU’RE TEAMING UP WITH JARED DEPARIS.

Yes it was a big job for a young guy and there’s a weight of expectation. He handled himself really professionally. I think he did a wonderful job.

I missed out the little bit on Squizzy – mainly the interviewer talking.

HOW OLD ARE YOU EXACTLY, NATHAN?

I’m 40.

THERE IS A PART OF YOU, I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND ME SAYING THIS, THAT’S EVEN MORE MATURE THAN THAT IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

NP laughs and then says Hang on, what does that mean ?

IT’S A GOOD THING, NATHAN. YOU’RE MATURE BEYOND YOUR YEARS

NP laughs. You mean the bags under my eyes.

NO, NO – YOU CARRY YOURSELF AS THIS BLOKE WHO’S BEEN AROUND ON OUR SCREENS FOR DECADES. HERE YOU ARE AT 40, STILL IN YOUR PRIME.

I guess it’s an interesting time, some of the best roles are for males between 30 and 50, I reckon.

WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING WITH THIS, ACTING WISE

Well it’s always hard to say, these days I don’t bank on any single thing for any kind of trajectory. It’s such a fickle industry and I think for me I guess primarily I just keep looking for things that are going to challenge me or scare me. That’s why I got into it in the first place – to scare myself. Yeah if I don’t think I can do it I think I may as well have a crack at it. That was certainly the case when I took the romantic lead in MFMM and then now I’ve got to look for something different entirely, I guess, however long it takes.

ARE YOU A BIT OF AN AUSSIE LARRIKIN?

Actually no, not at all. I don’t follow any code of football, I am an ex-cyclist, I still ride my pushbike a lot. Not a sports follower. I’m not much of a beer drinker. I’m a little bit more of a red wine connoisseur, quaffer. I don’t have a car that’s particularly (special), I do have a motorbike. I’ve got a Triumph Speed Triple. NICE. Yeah lovely. A far cry from period motorbikes which I had to ride a little while ago as well.

WHY DID YOU MOVE TO MELBOURNE?

I actually moved down to shoot the series MFMM and mum and dad are down here. Mum’s not too well so I thought if I stuck around and helped them out a little bit. I always want an excuse to move around. I was in Sydney for 10 years. I grew up in an Airforce family so every 3 years or so we’d uproot. This is the next chapter of it.

ARE YOU THE NICE GUY IN THE PARK PLAYING WITH THE KIDS? I ASK YOU THAT BECAUSE THAT’S HOW YOUR VOICE AGENT KATHY EVANS DESCRIBES YOU.

I guess so. I got a couple of little dudes, little boys – so yeah I have lots of park time pencilled into my diary, that’s for sure, although I’m not so sure I’m the nice guy in the park – I’m kinda the stressed dad – the 15 month old just bolts straight for the road and then the other one just ? with someone on the slide. Multi-tasking by virtue of having 2 kids therefore I’m in trouble.

DO WOMEN THINK OF YOU AS THE MODERN MAN – MODERN AND MANLY?

NP laughs. Oh man, I have no idea

YOU HAVE A TALENT OF BRINGING OLD AND NEW TOGETHER. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT COMES NATURALLY?

In what context?

UNDERBELLY WAS SET IN 1970S AND 1920S

Oh yes. It’s quite possibly a little easier with the Underbellys because they don’t have to stick too hard to the nuances of the times – it’s a modernised version. With MFMM you have got to stick to the script. You can’t improvise too much around it because there are so many people out there that are going to pick it.

UNDERBELLY IS MORE LIKE A GUY RICHIE VERSION OF THE 20S

Absolutely.

YOUR ON-SCREEN CREDITS CERTAINLY TESTIFY TO YOUR VERSATILITY AS AN ACTOR

Yeah but look I’m just lucky to be able to get some quality gigs. It’s always the hard thing to be able to find them and then be asked to play them. I put it down to a lot of luck. Getting your foot in the door, getting the ball rolling. It’s important to keep making those brave choices.

AND YOU’VE PULLED THEM OFF BRILLIANTLY. YOU ARE, I WOULD DARE SAY TO YOU NATHAN PAGE, AUSTRALIA’S ANSWER TO GARY ALTMAN BECAUSE YOU’RE A KARMA CHAMELEON.

Oh look, that’s a lovely surprise, thank you. That would be lovely to be thought of as that. You can only dream and hope to follow a similar path.
