Wallet decade

When I was in middle school back in the dark ages of 2013-2016 I bought myself a wallet from Hot Topic donning the titular Shmebulock of Gravity falls and his iconic rainbow vomit. My mother never one to buy herself anything, carried her cash and change in a ziploc baggie contained within her purse that she would surely not replace until absolutely necessary, or gifted a new one when someone else felt it was time. It was never much cash and she didn't have any cards to line the pockets of a wallet, she would in fact continue mainly using cheques until 2019 and still to this day prefers them to the debit card. So a wallet was an unnecessary expense I suppose. Her baggie served it's purpose well enough, and was easily replaced without much effort when needed.

In highschool, atleast 9th grade maybe 10th, I got a new wallet. Also from Hot Topic, they took a lot of my gifted money back in the day. This wallet was the shirt of one mr Steven Universe, basically just pink with a big yellow star. A few weeks before my PSAT I lose this wallet with $150 inside, and then have to deal with not having my student ID for the PSAT which was, almost as big of a pain as losing $150 as a jobless 15 year old. Dipshit.

Anyway, during the glory days of new wallet I gave my mother Wallet #1, never really thought much of it. Just knew she needed one so why would I hoard it if she could use it. And she did! Not a big watcher of Gravity Falls herself she did watch a few with me when I was younger. Most notably her favorite episode is the one with Mermando, the scene she remembers most vividly being the end credits scene of the kid in pool jail. And when fans of the show tell her they love her wallet, she always mentions me giving it to her, and watching it with me.

For her birthday she only likes that I come hang out, doesn't want me spending my money on her. But she's cool so fuck that, I can spend a little money on my mother and no one else can tell me otherwise. I go to Hot Topic. No gifted money, just my own. And I buy my mother a Strawberry Shortcake wallet. I want her to have something nice, and (much like somebody else) I can scarcely find the will to spend any on myself. I won't bother her with the waste of any wrapping or special packaging however, neither of us fuck with that. Hot Topic bag in hand I let myself into the house. She asks me what it is, and when I tell her it's for her she rolls her eyes a little. She takes it no matter. And a smile crosses her face when she see's it. Lopsided just like mine.

My little brother came up after, and demanded that once my mother moved her stuff to the new wallet that the original wallet would be his. An atypical route for an heirloom, Shmebuwallet lives on.
