Yes, the Gilbert we know would most definitely torture himself with self-guilt about Violet after their reunion. But they will grow together, the two of them. I too often find myself thinking about their interactions after their reunion, about how things will take shape after the train scene and so on. Gilbert's character/nature is one that is so rare to find in fiction, that reading his chapters is a refreshing experience every time. One of my most favourite fictional male characters ever.
Yep, yep, yep. These idiots learn the hard way, but when they do, it’s definitive. What awaits them is certainly growth from now on.
YEAAAH, BABY. Gilbert is a gem in the middle of the protagonists/love interests we have in any genre of animanga or light novel. There’s literally nothing problematic about this soft bastard, yet he’s far from perfect. He’s inept about himself, but sharp as fuck when it comes to the feelings of others. He’s bad at dealing with his own emotions, but isn’t oblivious, obnoxious or unnecessarily blunt. He’s protective but not overbearing. He’s a serious adult man but is never depicted as shrouded in mystery with his own Adult Man Problems. He admits to his flaws and weaknesses, which realistically aren’t only physical, but also mental and emotional, and constantly tries his very best at fixing himself despite already being in his thirties. But most of all, I love that he’s an actual feminist. There’s none of this stupid “I trust your strength but I shouldn’t let you do this because you’re a girl” shit with him. It’s nothing short of “I trust your strength but I don’t want to let you do this because I love you and you should have your own life outside of killing people for my sake”. And it goes without saying that I also love him for not being a cowardly little Bitch and actually dialoguing with Violet about the things they need to discuss. Especially when saying he loves her, which takes an average protagonist fucking forever and is usually not nearly as deep.
What a man. I love him.
