Hobbit Doors for Martin

[For those of you who don’t know, my sweet boy Marty was hit by a car just over a month ago. He’s going to require surgery (specifically, a femoral head ostectomy (FHO)), which is going to be a very costly procedure.]

[I recently began drawing these little Hobbit houses, just for fun, and it struck me that these are something people might really like. So, I just started a Kickstarter. If you help me fund Martin’s surgery, you’ll get a one-of-a-kind Hobbit Door drawing.]

Those born in the season of Midyear (June) 1st - 30th Soul color:  White Temperament: Fleeting, unpredictable, and require encouragement and support of their peers. Even when all is right with the world, The Steed will still display fickle signs. This irritable personality of The Steed is a side-effect of their extremely intuitive emotions. This sign often feels the tremor of thunder before the clouds gather, and will not hesitate to warn those around them who have yet to see danger –possibly appearing as a paranoid fool. Their strong intuition, sensitivity to others, and perceptive intelligence easily sets them at the top. They are forward thinkers, almost clairvoyant…  Romance:  Others may sense the deep sensual emotions and passion of The Steed. They will be drawn to it like a fool, graced by the presences of a wild horse in the meadow. Approach with caution, expect them to flee, if you are patient and offer trust, those under the sign may slowly approach you. Lead with kindness, and make the first move –but do not advance quickly.

Struggles: One who is born under The Steed may possibly know there own struggles. They project these feelings onto others and burn bridges all too quickly. [Martin Kitty Update]

[So, Martin’s displaced hip will not set. There’s apparently a bit of bone in the tendon that is preventing this. The vet is going to let me take him home tomorrow morning to supervise him, as he’s now eating and drinking on his own now.]

[We’re going to watch him, because they’re suspicious that there may have been nerve damage to his leg. If there has been, there won’t be any point in surgery (FHO) because it won’t fix his leg.]

[But he’s going to need to be taken are of constantly for a while; I’m blessed to have a roommate who will be there to care for him while I’m at work. It looks like I may have a disabled cat now.]

Mistaken Identity

The mer could only look at Gaelle, perplexed at her words. Adventuring was dangerous, yes; that’s what made it fun! What songs were sung about a man or mer who encountered nothing in his travels? Who stayed in an office all day writing boring old papers?

He couldn’t fathom being content with a life devoid of heart-pounding excitement like that.

“I keep hearing of dragons, but the closest I’ve ever found was an Argonian who found overly spiced wine,” Sier replied, sounding almost disappointed. “Entertaining to watch, but not exactly a daring battle. Are they truly a problem around here? I guess they could be in the southern reaches, but maybe it’s too cold for them up in Haafingar. I’ve never seen a hint of one up there.”

Reflexively Sier looked up as well, finding a cloud that looked vaguely like an elven ship before growing bored.  “So what do you do that’s excitement enough? Are you a trader?”

“Yes, in a way,” Gaelle answered cautiously, ducking her head to pass under the low-hanging branch of an evergreen tree. She of course had a different answer for anyone who asked her about her trade, but they all ran along the same general thread. “I’m a ‘finder’ of sorts. I’ll take out a contract with anyone who wants something that can’t be found at market. I find it for them, and I get a cut of the benefits. And sometimes I simply handle the exchange of gold, even if I was not the one who did the finding. It sounds rather boring, I know,” she added as the turned around a bend in the road. “But it’s fairly safe work, not to mention I get to travel....”

She trailed off as the sound of rushing water reached her ears. She could smell the river, too, and the scent of fresh-cut wood. As they finally crested the last small hill, they saw the old stone bridge in front of them. And beyond that, a small collection of stone buildings with thatched rooves, smoke rising from nearly every chimney, and the sound of people going about their daily business. 

“That’ll be Ivarstead.” Gaelle stated, noting the elf’s eager expression. “Really not much to it. Nearly half of those horses stabled at the inn are going to be travelers like us,” she explained as they crossed the bridge. “Come to see the Seven Thousand Steps, no doubt.”

She glanced around; her contact aught to have arrived before she did. He was supposed to be a blonde Nord man, with dark blue eyes and a scar on his cheek. Could have been a little more specific, she thought sourly, noting the half-dozen blonde Nord men she could already see walking about. Likely he’d spot her before she spotted him, she figured. “Well, I’m going to see to having my horse stabled,” she said to Sieralon. She hadn’t asked about the young mer’s plans once he reached the town, but she figured it had little to do with her, after all. 

Perhaps I aught to offer to travel back to Riften with the boy, she wondered, given that he didn’t seem to know the roads particularly well. She was about to speak again, when she noticed a small handful of people standing at the lumber mill nearby. They appeared idle, but she couldn’t help but feel that they had been looking at her for longer than normal. Or are they looking at Sieralon...?

She could not tell.

Dearest Mother,

I had an entire letter written for you by the time we’d passed through the Jeralls. I was going to have it sent once we reached Bruma, but a fierce wind came through our encampment and it was blown off the side of a bluff, so I’ve had to start over again. But we’ve made it to Chorrol.

We are sleeping outside the walls tonight. We’re sharing an encampment with a group of merchants from Hammerfell! They looked at me funny when I explained why I was here, but J’Rassa said that they feel that way about all mages in Hammerfell. But otherwise they’re a nice lot. They’re cooking had a lot of odd spices in it.

I will see the old Guild hall tomorrow. The one in Bruma, mother, you’d never have thought it was once a place of study. Apparently it served as barracks in the Great War; now it’s a shoddy inn. It made me feel a little sad. Were there no books, no scrolls or anything of the sort saved from the time before?

But I hope the Arch Mage is right. One day, maybe we can have a guild of mages again all over Tamriel, where anyone with the talent can come to learn. I think one day we can.

I will write again after we reach the Imperial City. I wish you could have come with us, mother. I’d love to see all the places you’ve been.

[So Martin got hit by a car today.]

[He’s alive, but he dislocated his hip, and there’s a chance he’ll need surgery. What’s worse is this happened while I was at work, and it was only thanks to a kind stranger that he was able to get to the vet. Luckily we live across the street from an animal hospital and they were able to contact my roommates. But since it’s Memorial Day weekend, they closed and I don’t even get to see him until Tuesday.]

[The bill is already up to over $800, even without surgery. But I’m just glad he’s going to be okay.]

[So, pardon the OOC post, but I’ve been showing this beautiful boy off on this blog ever since I got him and I’m not about to stop now.]

Early Morning in the Temple District

[Just ridin’ around Winterhold and I’m attacked by a pair of vicious.... goats?]

[I’m not even kidding, all the weird shit I’ve ever seen in my Skyrim game happens, without fail, near Winterhold. Anyone else experience this phenomenon? I’ve seen riderless horses fall from the mountainside, books floating in the air or randomly sitting at the base of a tree.... what do they get up to in Winterhold?]

Mistaken Identity

“I’m from Alinor originally,” Sier answered with a smile. “My parents didn’t want me to come out here but I’m an adult now and they can’t stop me, so here I am. I’ve been here for… three months now? Four? Mostly up around Haafingar, but the hold is rather dull if you aren’t into soggy ships.”

He grinned. “Now that I’ve the means to explore I’m finally doing it. What brings you out of Cyrodiil? It sounds like a fun place to explore; so much history, and a lot of it still lost in a tomb somewhere. Are you not an adventurer?”

Adventurer.

Gaelle had to chuckle at that word. This seemed to add a slight puzzlement to the young mer’s expression, so she added, “Ah, no....... no, not me. An adventurer.....”

She paused, surveying the land around them. “It’s just an odd way to make one’s living, is all. I’ve always wondered.... when there are plenty of trades and jobs available for all, why would someone risk their life unnecessarily for old trinkets and lost gold? I suppose one might study them, these old ruins. My brother, he was always fascinated by those ancient things. Old books, strange things that he bought from adventurers at the market. But it seems.....”

Trailing off, she gave a small shrug. “I suppose I’ve seen enough of danger and dark places that living off of my trade is adventure enough for me.” But she still smiled at the elf, hating to discourage him when he seemed so eager. “But each ship sails from a different wind, as they say. You just watch yourself, though. Exploring is all well and good until you become the supper of some cave bear. Or dragon,” she added, her eyes tracing the sky of their own accord. 

But it was a quiet day. And she was grateful for it.

“I told you to go to the Imperial City to bring back five warriors and mages.”

“But, we brought back seven....”

“I knew you would. If I’d told you to bring back seven, you’d have brought back ten.”

“Wonderful!” Sier grinned. “Let’s be off, then! Unless you wanted a rest yourself? It’s pleasant here when there aren’t interesting things happening.”

From the way he fidgeted it was clear the young mer was rested up. It also became clear that he intended to treat Gaelle much the same way he’d treat any other strange mer his parents introduced him to:  politely, deferring to the elder of the group when in doubt.

And he’d almost never been the eldest in the group, to the point where he automatically thought of the next person as elder.

“We can swap stories or something either way, right? I’d love to hear more about this place!”

Taking the lead, Gaelle stepped forward along the road, leading the horse behind her, with her new young acquaintance walking alongside her.

“Not much to tell, really,” she replied. “I’ve not lived in Skyrim for too long; it’s been about nine, almost ten years now. It’s been.....” She paused. “It was better before the war started, that much I can tell you. The roads were safer. And no dragons.”

She remembered the last time she’d seen a dragon; or rather, heard one. She hadn’t actually seen it at all, only a shadow passing overhead, but its roar had been deafening. She remembered being incredibly grateful for the cover of the trees.

After a pause, she ventured, “You’re not from Skyrim, I take it. Have you been here long?”

“I..... suppose I do? I mean, I’m not about to go and hug any random stranger. At least not while sober. After that I can make no promises.”
