It never really bothered Hikari that Piplup didn’t want to evolve after she understood why. Being a coordinator, she didn’t really need a whole lot of muscle on her team, and Piplup could certainly hold his own in a battle. He was her dearest friend, and she’d never want to do anything to sadden him.

"It was never really my decision." She shrugged, smiling over at Piplup briefly. "Piplup’s a performing Pokemon— he battles too, but I think he’s always liked being cute and small enough for me to carry when we travel."

If Hibiki had flourished under bragging about his accomplishments, then Hikari was the same way it came to speaking about contests. Most people who weren’t already familiar with them tended to immediately dismiss them as frilly beauty pageants, so she was eager to talk about the reality of them.

"Mhmm. There’s an appeal and battle round," Hikari replied, grinning proudly. "Most people think contests are glorified pageants, but it’s really more difficult than that— it’s about showing off your Pokemon’s beauty. Even in the battling rounds, your Pokemon has to be both strong and beautiful.”

Yeah, maybe that would make sense. Sometimes Pokemon evolution were really a mystery-- small Pokemon like Piplup eventually evolved into something more sophisticated and cute pokemon like Glameow turned into... well. Not that all Glameow were cute, of course, and he could appreciate a good Pokemon even if it were ugly, but there were just some things that you couldn't help but to acknowledge.

"Oh yeah. I guess some Pokemon are just affectionate like that-- well, no, not just some. A lot of them. Haha, I wonder if it must suck for those that are always big and, you know, not-so-portable." Of course, Hibiki would love them all the same, but it was something to think about.

He actually was pretty impressed by the idea of contests, mostly because it wasn't something that he would be able to do himself. Don't get him wrong-- Hibiki was all for battling and learning the right techniques to be successful, but when it came to keeping things beautiful at the same time as trying to win, he might fall flat there, even he had to admit that.

"That's really cool. Maybe I'll come see one some time since it seems so interesting. I mean, hey! I'd never be able to come up with an original performance for the first portion, let alone keep up with one while I was battling and still intend to win."

Even though Hibiki didn't seem like a traditional guy, deep down he really could appreciate the historical aspects that Johto had to offer. Ecruteak City was one of the biggest spots for that, too, and although he had been there before a few times already, he visited whenever he happened to be in Johto. There was something about the atmosphere (or maybe it was the cute Kimono Girls) that dragged him here every so often and, well, he just sort of liked it.

The way it felt like fall even in the summer, as if the town itself might as well have been immortal in a way, was really cool (literally-- it was a great place to beat the heat during the heat waves that passed through Johto whenever summer rolled around), but that wasn't the only thing that brought him here. There was always some new and old time-y (that was the best way he could describe it, anyway) thing to check out by the natives and, not to mention, one of his favorite gym leaders just so happened to live there.

Speaking of which, it would be really bad if said gym leader just so happened to have challengers at the moment because Hibiki had decided to just waltz into the gym itself (shamelessly, at that), seeking to speak to one of his befriended league members from his original journey.

Hikari nodded. “Yeah, she’s mellowed out a lot since then. She used to be…pretty rambunctious.” 

Piplup’s evolution had never really been an issue. She used to get defensive over the questions, but she’s grown used to them by now. For the most part, people were just curious, and it wasn’t really a big deal. “He almost did, but he liked himself the way he is. I ended up getting him an everstone, but he’s still pretty strong anyway.” 

Hikari raised her eyebrows in amusement as Hibiki seemed to bask in the compliment. She bit back a grin. “I do, actually! I’m a coordinator, so it’s kind of my job.”

It must have been nice, having a rambunctious Quilava. While his Typhlosion wasn't exactly mellow, once she was fully evolved she had taken to acting as more of a mother figure to him along the road while his real mother wasn't around in his travels.

"Oh, I get it." Actually, he didn't, but it was only because he had never had a Pokemon that didn't really want to evolve. The Pokemon he hadn't trained enough yet to didn't ever seem opposed to it and his usual team had been pretty happy with the changes and strength increase. Even so, there had to be some Pokemon like that, and it didn't seem completely out there, so he accepted it. "And I'll take your word for that, too!"

Although he hadn't ever seen a coordinating contest live himself (or even on TV, actually), he had definitely heard about them, and as she mentioned it again, Hibiki couldn't help but to be curious. "Yeah, right, I remember. By the way, is it true that you perform AND battle in those contests? It seems like a lot of work.."

"I'm not a kid, though," he laughed a little, shrugging it off. "And I can't really help it if I can't sleep, you know."

"Really? Silver’s been training this entire time? I haven’t seen him in a while. I visited Johto not too long ago! Though I guess I didn’t have the time to see New Bark before going back home… I got to hear a lot about the legends, though!"

"I think so, but... well.. The last time I saw him was at the Dragon's Den, so I might be wrong. I didn't know he went to Kanto recently, though. Weird. New Bark itself is kind of... small, but it's welcoming. Plus it has me and Kotone and Kris. I think we're an attraction in itself. And the legends are nice. Like Ho-oh and Lugia, right? Celebi?"
