Brilliant and super simple technology that uses heat from efficient mud ovens (which require half the amount of charcoal or wood) to generate electricity.

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). Did you know that penguins projectile poop? The theory is that this keeps their nests clean because they don’t poop in their own nests…the only problem is, they’re all within target range of all their neighbours! This is one of my proudest photos (and took lots of time and energy to capture)!

Being a penguin biologist isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. I’ve literally been hit from head to toe with penguin poop (see above picture as evidence). But they are absolutely incredible animals and I’m so grateful to have studied them in Antarctica.
