she/they/ella - icon by @inges-icons - i had no time to hate because the grave would hinder me, and life was not so ample i could finish enmity. nor had i time to love, but since some industry must be, the little toil of love, i thought, is large enough for me. -emily dickinson
hey so when ur talking about omegaverse but espesh a/b/o yous need to leave the slashes in a/b/o if u have to use that term. bcos without the slashes, ur just putting a slur against my ppl (racists shorten the Aboriginal in Aboriginal Australians) all over my dash where i have to constantly see it and that fucking sucks, my guys
and i know most of yous didnt know this and thats fine! no need to apologise im not trying to make u feel bad, im just trying to navigate fandom and this website without being constantly exposed to a really awful racist slur
if u have to use that specific term, at least keep the slashes between the letters. it still sucks to see tho ngl. even better! stick to omegaverse or instead use aob (alpha-omega-beta) (imo its also nicer to pronounce; ay-oh-bee. ayo-bee)
anyway, pls spread awareness and (nicely) let ppl know when theyre using a racist slur for a fandom term
Use the Walgreens Brand which is pretty cheap and it does wonders and doesnāt leave me with a white cast. And Iām dark as hell so I hate looking ashy but not all sunscreens are made equally and itās one of the better ones Iāve used.
Yea fam. All that āwe donāt need sunscreenā shit is a myth. Combine that with the fact that most dermatologists donāt know how to spot skin cancer in Black people and itās a nasty combination.
āWhile incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.ā
Sorry about the link, Iām on mobile. But this is from August 2016, which I know isnāt the most recent but itās still SUPER IMPORTANT. Yāall please wear sunscreen. With Google itās even easy to find smaller, Black-owned brands.
Dudes healthcare is so fake. My ADHD meds are $940 without insurance. But they gave me a website of "coupons" which straight up looks like a scam website, and I got it today for $60! Just a coupon from a random website and it was $900 cheaper. America, I am confusion!! America explain!!
as a pharmacy technician i can share with you some websites that give you those "coupons" for your meds!
goodrx is the most well known one, but if i'm trying to find the cheapest price for a patient i compare it to scriptcycle, and use whichever is offering the best price. you just type in the medication (PLEASE make sure you're getting the right drug, dosage, and quantity) and your zip code and they will spit out some offers for you
some pharmacies may have their own discount card to compare to as well!
if you are getting a name brand medication, you can also look at the manufacturer's website to see if they offer any evouchers for you to use too
I'm seeing warnings about scammers trying to commission artists but the "reference sheet" for their character they want commissioned isn't an image but a .vbs file ("visual basic script"), and will run a script when you open it, probably to yoink your account(s), but I haven't seen this from anyone who's actually clicked it yet. Just be careful and never open a file like that, 'cause people suck.
Fuck Meyer-Briggs whatever typology. This INTFP shit is only for redditors up their own asses to substitute for a personality. Use my new typology instead!
Hey! Just a reminder! AO3 does NOT have an app. This garbage was made by theives who steal fan artistās work and sell it back to you.
āOh, but itās free!ā There are ads. They are making money off of this. They are stealing from the creators you love and you are hurting those same creators if you use this app or any similar app.
App acts like a browser but paywalls offline reading while reviews state itās full of intrusive ads and lacks basic functionality such as commenting. Do not use this app. Use the ao3 website. The app uses Gen-AI content for imagery on categories and is essentially forcing people to pay if they want to read your fics offline.
By the way you donāt have to pay anything to read fics offline. You can do it for free using easily accessible resources that donāt cost anything.
You do not need to pay $1 every week, $2 every month, or even $18 a year. It can be done free! By anyone!
You can also turn ao3 into an app itself by adding it to your Home Screen. You donāt need to download shady apps.
I didnāt have Barbies/they stayed in the box/Iām bald

TECHNICALITIES:
tv shows, video games, and history all fall under the first category, as does pop culture (ex., Barbie-as-Taylor-Swift putting on a concert). however, NON-SPECIFIC pop culture (ex., Barbie-as-Generic-Pop-Star putting on a concert) falls under make up stories (mundane)
DESTROY means anything the doll cannot come back fromā limbs torn off, burned, etc. and MUST BE CAUSED WITH INTENT. animal damage or leaving them outside DOES NOT COUNT.
likewise, drawing on faces and cutting hair falls under dress up, brush hair (that would be an expression of transformation and creativity, not destruction)
if the barbie was destroyed in the PROCESS of plot recreation, it goes in the first category (ex., Ken-as-Jack-From-Titanic gets thrown in the pool) but if the barbie is destroyed ADJACENT of CANONICALLY DIVERGENT to plot recreation, it goes in the second category (ex., Barbie-as-Princess-Leia gets tortured by Darth Vader, just like in the movie, but this time she gets her head ripped off)
āFantasyā means anything involving magic, non-historical princesses, nonexistent creatures, and ANY supernatural powers (aliens included)
āMundaneā means anything that a human being would hypothetically be physically capable of (being president, going to space, getting married, etc)
dressing up and brushing hair CAN be involved in the other categories obviously, but if itās the ONLY thing you did with them, or if you had a doll stand that you actually used, then it falls under dress up, brush hair
anything involving arranging the dolls in geometric patterns, sorting them, etc., and then NOT TOUCHING THEM qualifies as an Arcane Ritual. destruction may be involved, but if the end goal of that destruction is to achieve a certain effect, it falls under Arcane Ritual
ceremonial burials and human sacrifices fall under the category of recreating plots if they have a historical origin (reading about mummies or ritual sacrifice and then putting it to practice with the doll, for example) but if the method of the ritual has no discernible origin or purpose, it falls under Arcane Ritual
For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use -expected_number_of_chapters: 1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false
This post is going around again (with an unfortunate syntax error on it - this version is correct), so I thought I'd add some information that folks have mentioned wanting in the notes.
Any time you want help with how to use AO3, look for the question mark bubbles. Clicking or tapping on those bubbles will open up a pop up window with information on that specific part of AO3. For example, here's the information for Include filters.
2. When you log into AO3 for the first time, you'll have a banner on your dashboard that gives you a ton of links and information that's useful for new users. A lot of people will dismiss this banner without ever reading it, but you can get it back at any time.
Go to your Preferences, scroll down to Misc. and check the box next to Turn the new user help banner back on. Update your preferences, and the banner will return.
3. When you first tap or click into the search in the header bar, a little popup tip appears below the text box. This is showing you an example of a search that you can do.
4. If you've never seen the filters before, click or tap on any tag that you're interested in. On a wide screen like a laptop, the filters will appear on the right hand side of the screen. On a narrow screen like a phone, you can tap on the Filters button for the menu to appear.
5. The FAQ has a series of questions related to Searching and Browsing on the Archive. You can find the FAQ in the dropdown under the word About in the header.
6. You can also just click on stuff and see what happens. For example, if you're wondering what the four icons at the top corner of each fic blurb mean, you can just click on them and get a popup with the key. Same thing if you're wondering about the icons at the top right of a bookmark.
7. I almost forgot āļøIf you want to see fics based on the primary pairing but you're okay with additional ships being in the fic (so otp:true won't work for you) - there's a script for that! AO3 Only Show Primary Pairing.
This post is extremely long now, but if you're wondering about other things just drop them in the notes.
hi everyone bringing back a "lets all thank ao3 volunteers"
the Great AO3 Shutdown sucks but its not the volunteers fault. thank you fellow readers for your hard work. signed, a survivor of the 2023 hacker shutdown
