‘don’t be afraid. it’ll all be over soon’ never struck me as a particularly strange thing to say until I realized, the Mind Flayer /loves/ terrorizing people. He wants everyone to fear him. He spends the entire show attempting to horrify and scare people as he prepares for his ultimate revenge. Fear is his /thing/. The Mind Flayer isn’t the one telling people not to be afraid.
