Some personal objectives I had for the start of Communication Design Studies was mainly to create professional work and improve on making my designs look more completed. Yet, now I think I want to focus on creative/lateral thinking. Because the work can look professional with expensive production and materials but if the ideation isn’t there then it really isn’t that good of a design in my opinion; and i’ve been struggling with that.

I feel like with my first objective though, I have created better work and it does look a lot more professional, I obviously do have a long way to go; and it’s really not perfect, but at least I know that.

Aside from personal objectives, I have learnt a lot within this course. Mostly consisting of actual crafting; i’ve never made a zine before, i’ve never really completed group work, had to use layouts or focus on type making. Therefore, this course has majorly helped me refine a lot of different skills and experiment with different medias.

This course has definitely inspired me to be better. Seeing my peers create such amazing work was, 1: harsh, because I know I need to improve a lot and I still have a long way to go, but also 2: inspiring, to see that these guys will be successful and have a good career/future. 

It was also amazing to interview a creative that i’ve been motivated by and adore the art from, gave me that boost of inspiration to finish off the semester.

+ I made the final magazine today. I am very satisfied with the outcome. The folding and binding was difficult due to the heaviness of the papers. However, thanks to my fails in my experiments previously, I made the final with no big trouble. 

+ I am planning to send the photos to my creative. I wish she likes my zine.

FINALLY… the zine is complete!

Today I finished making my zine, after numerous attempts. I was only able to make one other copy that I am happy with, as the hands on process made it very difficult to mass produce. I will also bring in one of my earlier attempts to our exhibition as it is almost identical to my final with just a few colour changes here and there, meaning that I have more work to share with the class. 

After completing this assignment I felt a sense if accomplishment, I am very happy with how my zine turned out. I also showed my creative, Nicola, who was very happy with the end result. 

Finishing this final assignment gave me a chance to get on tumblr and reflect upon all my old posts. I think it’s a very nice platform to be able to look back on my previous work and see how far I have come throughout this semester.

week twelve

finishing up the semester with prototyping and finishing off our zines. i received some amazing answers from my chosen creative. he really gave some detailed insight into starting out as an illustrator and the obstacles and that to go with it. its super inspiring and honestly worth the read. check out jap mikel on social media to see some amazing filipino/cultural art pieces.

Week Eleven

Like seriously, how amazing is this for a Film Festival???

“Balete” is inspired by summer trips to my home town where we pass by vast rice fields and communication towers along the way. I imagine what could be seen from the road towards the horizon. Initially, I saw a spacecraft landing port but it felt too scifi. I wanted something eerie and supernatural and then I saw a colossal ancient balete grove…and a former dweller who had moved to the city, visits her “home." 

Balete trees are both feared and revered by native Filipinos, believing that they are dwellings of nature and ancestral spirits.

week nine

Readings from [DIGBEYOND]

Intrigued by the title “It’s hard to find a good lamp”, I ended up reading from the CommDesign Studies Reader again (digbeyond.com). This book from Donald Judd (1993), a designer that is known for his minimalistic sculptures leads us through his experience of creating and the co-existence of art and furniture. “If a chair or a building is not functional, if it appears to be only art, it is ridiculous.” - (Donald Judd).

Further into the read, he goes on to explain how he wasn’t able to purchase furniture as he moved to West Texas as many pieces went out of fashion, not pleasurable to look at or moderate in price. Therefore as he creates his pieces, he continues to strive to make the furniture cheaper. Yet, making furniture cheap “requires great numbers which requires a large distribution”. This leads to department stores, yet the designer would then receive very little from this. He then spirals down this method and concludes that it makes “an impossible price”. Judd continues to explain another method that can solve this issue price, fashionable, distribution and efficiency and concludes that “the best method is small distribution”. This entire section of this book taught me to not stop at one solution, when you can find a better solution.

Attached to this reading is an interesting poster explaining Judd’s thoughts of the co-existence of art and furniture. He states that “Furniture is Furniture” and the ‘art’ that is in architecture, ceramics, textiles and many things is ‘art’. Therefore, “We try to keep the furniture out of art galleries to avoid this confusion”.

HOBO GRAFFITI 

A Moniker is a piece of graffiti, usually written on the side of a freight train, communicating an identity that will travel the country. Originating in the late 1800′s in America, railway works and train-hoppers began drawing unique ‘symbols and words’ on the sides of trains usually using chalk. As time progressed the mark-making developed into a graphic language for travellers to spread information and provide directions to others.

Away last week so couldn’t attend classes but here’s some pics I took during the week of some design that caught my eye.

1. MoMA, exhibition being installed, the black shapes on the left in particular are reminiscent of the typefaces everyone was exploring in class using simple shapes

2. BOOOOOK by Bob Cobbing, simple sans serif font which has been stretched out in a really interesting way, love the composition

3. disposable plastic bag from a deli, most delis in New York all have a unique bag design, some have smiley faces or bouquets of flowers illustrated on them, most have the text “thank you for shopping here” or “have a nice day”! So uplifting and a nice example of good every day design that has elevated the mundane design to something beautiful :) (these deli bags have also been featured in the book PLASTIC PAPER by Sho Shibuya, great read)

week seven

A reading from the week 7 edition for Communication Design studies (digbeyond.com) includes an interview from Charles Eames (1972) titled “What is Design?”. This is an interesting read as it can contribute to our current project in CommDesign, with very open-ended questions as well as some questions with a simple yes or no answer. 

A part that I liked from this interview was:

“Q: What are the boundaries of design?

A: What are the boundaries of problems?”

As this shows us that as long as there are creative problems to solve, designers are always going to be needed. I also liked Eames’ answer relating to whom does design address itself to; e.g, to specialists or privileged social class. He simples answers that design is addressed “to the need”.
