Aya (2007) by Marguerite Abouet
Art by Clément Oubrerie
“Ivory Coast, 1978. Family and friends gather at Aya’s house every evening to watch the country’s first television ad campaign promoting the fortifying effects of Solibra, “the strong man’s beer.” It’s a golden time, and the nation, too–an oasis of affluence and stability in West Africa–seems fueled by something wondrous.
Who’s to know that the Ivorian miracle is nearing its end? In the sun-warmed streets of working-class Yopougon, aka Yop City, holidays are around the corner, the open-air bars and discos are starting to fill up, and trouble of a different kind is about to raise eyebrows. At night, an empty table in the market square under the stars is all the privacy young lovers can hope for, and what happens there is soon everybody’s business.”
Aya tells the story of its nineteen-year-old heroine, the studious and clear-sighted Aya, her easygoing friends Adjoua and Bintou, and their meddling relatives and neighbors. It’s a breezy and wryly funny account of the desire for joy and freedom, and of the simple pleasures and private troubles of everyday life in Yop City. An unpretentious and gently humorous story of an Africa we rarely see-spirited, hopeful, and resilient–Aya won the 2006 award for Best First Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Clément Oubrerie’s warm colors and energetic, playful lines connect expressively with Marguerite Abouet’s vibrant writing.”

Much of our content is focused on universal travel themes like destination profiles, wanderlust, packing tips, stylish gear and trip reports. But, as American women-of-color who’ve often wondered why we don’t encounter more people like us on the road, we also wanted to create a space where we could talk about practical tips, experiences, and concerns as they relate to cultures of color.
Travel and the life-lessons it brings have a way of breaking barriers, broadening perspectives, and deepening understanding. So, we invite everyone — regardless of age, gender, cultural background or locale — to join us in the discourse.

I Luv 2 Globe Trot is the brainchild of Renee Evans and Nicole Brewer.
The two met as English as Second Language teachers in South Korea in 2010. As expats living in Korea they have taken numerous vacations together and quickly learned that they shared a common passion: travel. They both came to the conclusion that this passion needed to be fulfilled and shared with others. Thus, I luv 2 globe trot came to fruition in 2012.
Renee Evans graduated from the University of Miami with a BA International Studies and Political Science. She is currently studying for her MA in Education. Nicole Brewer is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BA in Communications, a MA in International Humanitarian Action with a background in market research. Their paths crossed on an amazing journey of following their hearts desire to live and work abroad.
Renee and Nicole both felt it was important to share their journey of trotting the globe with friends, family and soon to be friends through the globe trot community. Between the two friends they have traveled to more than 30 countries and counting! I Luv 2 Globe Trot is a place for those that are already avid travelers to gain advice and for those interested in travel to learn about breaking free of the mold and living their life with purpose and travel. We want to inspire women, minorities and others alike to trot the globe!

Burn survivor shares inspiring message through makeup
At nine years old, an accident left Shalom Nchom with visible burn scars on her face. Though she was stared at by her peers and adults, and sometimes brought to tears, Nchom did not let them get the best of her. She turned her attention to makeup and in middle school, made a career out of it.
