OOC | Charles & Ana
IM NOT CRYING YOURE CRYING PICTURE THESE TWO GROWING UP TOGETHER AS RELATIVES OF DRAGONRIDERS OK AND THEN HOW EXCITED CHARLES WAS WHEN HE GOT A DRAGON AND HE TOTALLY BELIEVED ANA WOULD BE A RIDER SOMEDAY TOO AND ITS FINE IM TOTALLY FINE
OOC | Charles & Rob
WHAT. A. DISASTER!!!!! Ok, so like I was saying in the comment to Ned, I feel like these two know each other from ~back in the day~ when Charles was a dragonrider and came south to fight/mediate disputes/whatever was needed!! And these two are only about three years apart whereas Cris and Will were about the same age so I do feel like there were probs some uncomfortable moments w these two pushed together where Charles was like ‘......i didn’t hatch a dragon for this’ jk jk but yeah!! Charles is noT Rob’s biggest fan!! But he’s 100% on board to give him another go, now!! Ppl can change and he must’ve done some srs growing in the past 15 years bc a dragon hatched for him!!!! which it wouldn’t have done if he didn’t have the heart of a dragonrider (Rob ~did have the heart of a dragonrider - he just ripped it out of someone else’s chest so the joke’s on all of Aragoth tbh ;D) but yeaH he’ll be...surprised when he arrives and meets Rob and he’s like:
OOC | Charles & Ric
Charles would love to help Ric out!! Idk if he’ll be able to, realistically, but he’d love to at least try!!
OOC | Charles & Ned
I feel like these two probs fought together, once or twice, back in the day!! Also, Cassius and Cris are the same age and like I imagine Will must’ve been somewhere in there and MY CRIES (and Rob is only a few years younger than Charles anD so if they were altogether, Charles probs got thrown together w Rob at leaSt once and cue Charles sitting at a table w Rob [ likE ] alskdjfklsjdfj)
Anyway!! Charles and Roran are gonna be headed south to check out the new dragonrider who, unfortunately, is Rob! ;D and to train him!! So that’s gonna throw these two together again!! How do you think Ned will feel about all of that?
OOC | Charles & Annie
So Warin was an official armorer to the dragonriders, etc, and I do think he and Charles knew each other in that capacity and, if Annie happened to be running around the yard while Charles was there, I can see him like carving her a lil wooden dragon to play w or smth and pulling big bro/cool uncle stuff like he did w lil Roran back before everything went to hell and I creY
OOC | Charles & Amia
So obv Amia had a big bro who was a rider!! Obv Amia would’ve been small at the time of the Fall of the Dragonriders, so I doubt these two were close, or anything, if they ~did know each other, but yeah! Do you think they might’ve met?
OOC | Charles & Melisenda
Since Melisenda’s big bro was a dragonrider, do you think Charles might know the Wystans and Melisenda? I mean, I doubt they were close or anything bc of their entire personalities hahaha but yeah??
OOC | Charles & Sysley
So I feel like Charles deF would’ve known Sysley when he was the boy!! I can def see him being tight w her boys and the lot of them flying over to crash w her for a night or so before heading on their way wherever, etc, and obv dropping in on her whenever they happened to be in the north!! That being said, I 100% feel like he’s considered to be as dead as her kids, obv, and I doubt they’ve spoken or anything since then.
OOC | Charles & Romayne
So I feel like Romayne and Will Degrey probs met asp bc he seems to have been invited to courts, etc, in his official capacity, etc, and I feel like he was one of the most famous riders even while he was alive, etc...all of which may also mean that these two have met? Esp bc I feel like the Dragonriders were the the ppl Aragoth and the Isles would summon to mediate a dispute, etc. Anyway!! Yeah idk exactly where that takes us w them or anything hahah but yeah!! Those’re my thoughts!

OOC | Charles & Safira
So, given that these two are both ~magic plotline~ characters living in the same forest, idk exactly how or what will come of it, but I do feel like these two should meet!! Or have met before? Either way, though, I’m sure Charles has at the v least heard of Safira and possibly even met her during the days of the Dragonriders bc I def feel like Dezod was someone they always sort of kept an eye on bc like ofc he’d do some nice things occasionally (honestly the onLY example I can think of is setting Alaric free but stiLL ;D) but he’s also just...the worST and is often at the center of ridiculous and terrible situations and yeaH hahaha so the riders were probs like ‘oh goD’ when they heard he was training ppl tbh hahaha and tried to keep tabs? So, yeah, if Charles hasn’t met her, himself, he’s at least heard of her since, unlike Rowena, Safira doesn’t seem to have tried to keep her position as a sorceress secret? Anyway!! It’s a whole thing hahaha whatcha think? ;D
May It Be | Charles & Guin
It was strange, this thing: being honest, again; being real, again; being Charles Degrey, again. He’d almost forgotten, somewhere along the way, that he was himself: brave and heroic and generous: all the things that made up a dragonrider. He’d been proven all those things when Naery’s egg had cracked for him, but he’d almost lost them when she’d died before him. But, as cowardly and egotistical and self-serving as he’d felt in his days of hiding, he’d been still serving a higher purpose and that occurred to him, now, more strongly than it had. He felt his old self, again, emerging into the light after fifteen years of hibernation. At last, at long last, the time had come again and he was real and focused and present in the moment. he was Charles Degrey. A part of him was gone, he knew that: Naerys and the carefree optimism native to Char were gone, but he was alive beneath all the carnage that had lain waste to his life and all his beliefs. He was alive.
He’d been wary, at first, of introducing Roran and Arya to the Resistance. Charles was aware that it was needful and that Alaric had vouched for each of these people, but he couldn’t help that he’d grown suspicious during his years on the run. Despite his anxiety leading up to it, however, Charles felt a great swell of certainty, of pride, of relief now that they all knew. It had begun.
He stepped lightly through the camp, gathering a meal that had been made for them all, and strode towards an open seat. It was situated on a log which had been lovingly hewn into a bench (Charles knew well the marks of loyal Aragothi in hiding). One half of the seat was already occupied by a young lady, but the rest was vacant.
Charles gestured towards it. “May I?” he inquired.
A cheerful fire flickered in the center of the ring. A pot had been suspended over it and Cedric Boleyn hovered over it, passing out portions and stirring the stew that Kate Miller had so tenderly made. On another set of benches, Rose and Alaric spoke with Roran. The whole group chatted and, softly, Charles smiled. It was a pleasant thing to see so much affection everywhere. He knew what it was to have a fellowship and, though he’d seen his all burned up in flame-wreathed skies, he couldn’t stop the feeling that he was entering into one, once again. He felt new and almost whole and hopeful, again.
He seated himself beside her and smiled, softly. “I’m Charles Degrey,” he said, shrugged. He’d never had to introduce himself much when he was a Dragonrider proper before the Purge (a Rider’s reputation most generally proceeded him), and he wasn’t entirely sure he needed to, now - as he’d just been introduced to the group by Alaric - but it felt queer not to do so, now that he was used, again, to it.
He smiled, laughing at himself. “But I suppose you knew that, my lady.” Though Guin had not been introduced to him, specifically, yet, a mere glance at her fine clothing and bearing and a brief lifetime of experience before the Purge had taught him to recognize a noble when he saw one. It seemed to him a powerful thing that a privileged person who, being in the east, must play a role in Rowena’s very court, might take her life in her hands and fight for freedom. He smiled at her kindly, a little sadly. His Order had sworn, long ago, that they need never do so. The Dragonriders had always existed to protect all people and they had failed. He had failed. “How long, may I ask, have you been a part of the Resistance?”
OOC | Charles & Dmitrei
dmitreimassard
Yeah … so for now he actually doESN’T know about the dragon that they have and idk that he will for awhile. He will 1000%%% take an interest when he learns about it though and will try to insert himself somehow into all of that, but yeah for now i agree that they haven’t had any interaction and won’t for awhile
So here’s what I had saved in my drafts in response:
Charles: doing better than I thought since 2014 ;DDDD
That’s it hahaha ANYWAY!! So, since we last spoke, we’ve determined a lot of things about the future, including both Charles and Dmitrei’s ultimate fates, which is cool, so I feel like it might not be bad to further this discussion. I don’t necessarily even see them interacting in person (though I’m 100% open to that bc I do think they could have an interesting dynamic since they’re essentially opposites and would therefore make interesting foils to one another hahaha but yeah idk if their arcs would ever actually connect that way so yeah) but yeah obv what Dmitrei does and says has an impact on Charles, since Dmitrei has his fingers in every pie in Aragoth hahaha so we might have things to discuss, esp if he does develop an interest in Roran and his doings, etc.
I also don’t think Charles would see Dmitrei coming like AT. ALL. For one, I think there’s a good chance that, during his tenure as a dragonrider, he asp met the reaL Dmitrei (and possibly the real Alymar, for that matter, as well?) so...he has a VERY different picture in his head of who that means hahaha and just sees him as one of Rowena’s lickspittles.
That being said, it’s also been a v long time, etc, and like honestly if he did meet him again in person, I think he’d be like ‘that guy is a lot younger than i was thinking but 1) he probs hasn’t had any stresses in his life in the last 15 years 2) he 100% looks familiar and has a southern accent and idr what he looked like before bc he made no real impression on me so this all def checks out’ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and basically pulls an Arthur from BBC Merlin hahaha (Naerys was 100% the sensible one in the relationship klajsdkfjds)
Many Meetings | Alaric & Charles
alaricdemontfort
For a moment, Alaric thought he was dreaming.
Cassius had wiped them all out. Alaric remembered that day all too clearly. Dragonfire reigning from the sky as, one by one, they fell. Cassius had sworn to both Queen and country that none survived. How did Char come to escape? Char, who was the younger brother of Will DeGrey? Cassius would have known if he had not been amongst the dead.
He pushed those thoughts aside: there was time enough for questions later.
“Not yet,” Alaric replied, giving him a defiant grin.
Finding Char alive had given him a new sense of hope. He knew that Naerys did not survive – could not have survived. Aragoth was large and vast, but Alaric did not think that even Char could keep a fully grown dragon a secret for sixteen years. Still, Char had been dead and now he was not. He felt, also, that this meeting was not by chance. He wondered if Char had been seeking them out.
“Come,” Alaric said, “There’s a camp not far from here. It’s safe. We can talk there.”
Charles laughed when Alaric pronounced himself not yet dead. He quirked a brow, a whisper of his more youthful self on his features, and laughed. “I feel just the same.”
He was glad, more glad than words could say, that Alaric had remained true when all the world had turned its back and scorned the fate of those who had given their lives to defend them. Rowena had done well with her ceaseless propaganda, convincing all the youth of the world that she was right where a thousand, thousand dragons and their riders had all been wrong. Yet there were those, too, such as Alaric’s fellow Councilmen, who had known the truth and turned their backs, anyway. Alaric had proved the best of them - but, then, Charles had never had any doubt of that.
When Alaric invited him to come, Charles paused, grinned half-uncertainly. He knew he could trust Alaric, but he hesitated out of habit. He’d guarded his secrets so closely for so many years, something strange awoke in him at the thought of revealing, at last, the most precious of them. Yet, it was not merely this habit that stopped him. Charles’ next news was so immense, so momentous, he found he hardly had a word to couch it, no gesture to prepare his friend for what was to come.
“I will come,” he promised. “But, first, there is something I must tell you...and something I must show you, as well.”
He smiled, then, a bright grin that he couldn’t keep from his lips. Somehow, the sharing of this news seemed to make it real, seemed to conjure some strange optimism he’d not known in decade and a half.
“You recall, I trust, that my brother was wed and had a child from his union.” He shifted. “The rumors are that Roran Degrey died a babe at his mother’s breast but,” he shook his head, paused, turned to trudge back through the woods the way he’d come, and beckoned Alaric to keep pace with him. As he walked, he continued to speak.
“These are fabrications. When my brother lay dying at the hands of his best friend, he exacted one final oath from his betrayer. He made Cassius swear he would spare me, because he loved me and he knew, too, that I would find a way to save his family. Cassius spared me and I saved them, though I could not save his wife from the fever that stole her life away, I saved Roran.
“Since I was a fugitive, I entrusted Roran to his maternal grandmother’s care but, she being an elderly woman, she eventually passed away and, since that time, the boy has been in my charge. Roran has not, however, been my only charge. As Naerys died, I swore an oath to protect her eggs and have carried them with me in secret, all these years. There are three.
“It seems that Roran stumbled upon the eggs, one day, while I was away.” Charles stopped, spotting the glimmer of bright blue dragonscales. He pulled back a branch and stepped aside so that Alaric could see. “The Dragonriders have returned to Aragoth.”
