“My initial rise on YouTube came from YouTube featuring one of my videos on the front page. I went from having like a hundred subscribers that I’d amassed quite slowly to 4000 in a couple of days. At the time, it was like ‘Wow, I’m famous on the internet now, this is amazing’. But YouTube had been live for like two years already, so there was a bit of a community there, who didn’t really like the fact that I had gotten quite a large audience compared to what they had, without putting in a couple of years’ worth of time…” - Charlie McDonnell.
