Can the Gamecocks Make a Playoff Run?

The simple answer that most people would probably say is no. However, I think this team has what it takes to have a chance at the playoffs. Additionally, I like how Coach Beamer and the staff have started to use running back Matt Fuller. He is a guy who runs hard and bring a physical aspect to the run game. If the defense can play how it did against Kentucky, I think it will give us a chance to be in every game going forward. The Gamecocks play LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M their next five games; and all of them are ranked in the top 10, besides LSU who is ranked 13th. The obvious answer is that South Carolina will go undefeated and win out, ultimately ending with a National Championship.

Gamecock Football is Back

Finally! I never thought I would see the Gamecocks play a good, complete game, but they did just that on Saturday night. The ground game looked great and it was nice to see the offensive line opening holes and giving Lanorris enough time to make plays. Additionally, Dylan Stewart was an absolute game changer, causing two fumbles with one leading to a touchdown. The team is in a really similar spot compared to how they were last year. Lanorris needs to continue to big a part of the run game and the defense will have to dominate and give the offense some room for error. Do I think we can win out and make the playoffs even after starting 0-2 in conference? Yes, I absolutely do.

South Carolina Vs. Missouri

South Carolina is making the trip to Columbia, Missouri this Saturday for the Mayor Cup. Missouri is currently 3-0 and ranked number 23rd in the country. Missouri has Beau Pribula at starting quarterback, a transfer from Penn State who has been playing lights out. The Gamecocks are coming off a disappointing loss to Vanderbilt and are looking to bounce back. The big question leading into this game is whether Lanorris Sellers will be available to play. I think if Sellers is able to play and be himself, the Gamecocks have a good chance of getting a win. I am confident Coach Beamer will have his team ready to go and will have them playing with a chip on their shoulder, despite last week's abysmal performance against the Commodores.

Vanderbilt Vs. South Carolina Recap

Well, that was disappointing. The Vanderbilt Commodores came into Williams Brice Stadium on Saturday and absolutely destroyed the Gamecocks 31-7. Not only did South Carolina lose the game, but they also lost Lanorris Sellers to a concussion late into the second quarter. I am worried about how the team will fare the rest of the year, even if Sellers is healthy. Even when Sellers was playing, the offense didn't look great, however, it was a lot better than when Luke Doty was in. The team looked as if it gave up once Sellers went out, which is incredibly concerning. I have lost almost all hope in South Carolina making the playoffs and I think if they lay another egg against Missouri, the season is officially over.

Vanderbilt Vs. South Carolina Worries

South Carolina is coming off a not so dominant win against an inferior opponent in South Carolina State, which is making me a little worried about how they will fare against Vanderbilt this weekend. Vanderbilt beat Virginia Tech 44-20 last week, a Virginia Tech team South Carolina only beat 24-11. If the Gamecocks want to win I think they will need to put the ball in Seller's hands more and rely more on him than their running backs. I am not as much worried about the defense, as they have looked spectacular so far. I am worried about the offensive line, the play calling, and worried if Lanorris will show up and play his A-game, because South Carolina might need it.

South Carolina Vs. SC State Recap

South Carolina State made the trip to Columbia this past weekend, and it didn't go as smoothly as the gamecocks probably thought it would. The gamecocks didn't score a touchdown until about 5 minutes left in the second half. It was Vicari Swain who had two punt return touchdowns, back to back, that gave the gamecocks a lead. I think Coach Beamer has a lot that he needs to clean up before the game against Vanderbilt. The offensive play calling was suspect, as was the offensive line for a second week in a row. Coach Beamer needs to fix some things if South Carolina wants to beat remain undefeated.

Thoughts on South Carolina Vs Virginia Tech

This past Sunday South Carolina played Virginia Tech at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Additionally, I made the trip to Atlanta and got to see the game in person.

I think South Carolina has as high of a ceiling as any team in college football this year. Lanorris Sellers looked awesome and made some breath taking plays, including a perfect pass that resulted in a 60 yard touchdown by Nyck Harbor in the fourth quarter. On the defensive side of the ball, Dylan Stewart looked like a beast, causing havoc all game and especially in the second half. The main concern for the gamecocks has to be their offensive line. Lanorris didn't have a lot of time in the pocket on most plays and the run blocking wasn't good either. If the offensive line can clean up their act I think the sky is the limit this year for Shane Beamer and the cocks.

A Couple Reasons Why the Gamecocks Have A Real Chance to Win the National Championship

I think that the South Carolina Gamecocks have a real chance to make the college football playoff this year, and even win the national championship, and here's why.

Lanorris Sellers. That's it. I seriously could leave it at that and I think most people would understand, however, I can explain. In the season opener against Virginia Tech, Lanorris looked like he didn't miss a step, starting right off where he ended last year. Lanorris has a real chance to win the Heisman this year.

The defense looked legit. A lot of the questions around the gamecocks this year was whether their defense would be able to bounce back after losing so many starters to the NFL Draft. The defense allowed only six points against Tech and looked sharp as ever. All in all, I think if South Carolina continues to improve every week and stay healthy they have a legitimate shot at making noise in the college football playoff.

Week 1: South Carolina Vs. Virginia Tech

South Carolina enters week one as a seven and a half point favorite against the hokies (https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/college-football/virginia-tech-south-carolina-prediction-odds-player-prop-bets-picks-ncaaf-week-1-jaa/). Despite being favored by two scores, I will admit I am a little nervous about this game. Last year the gamecocks opened the season against Old Dominion and almost ended up losing. However, I think a lot of the players will remember that from last year and they should come out hot and not take Virginia Tech lightly at all. Additionally, the game will be held at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which should favor Virginia Tech because they don't have to play in Columbia at Williams Brice. The location shouldn't matter though. If both teams come to play I think South Carolina should be able to win in a dominant fashion and start their season off right with a big win.

Rahsul Faison

Rahsul Faison is cleared to play football this season! The gamecocks lost a big piece of their offense last season in Raheem Sanders, who got drafted to the NFL . Coach Beamer hit big on transfer runningback Rahsul Faison, formerly playing at Utah State and rushing for over a thousand yards last season. However due to injuries and covid, Faison needed to fight and get approved by the NCAA in order to have an extra year of eligibility, and it finally paid off. Faison should bring a different type of running style than what Sanders did last year. Faison will bring a fast and explosive style of running and should also be able to be a real receiving threat out of the backfield. I'm super excited about this news as everyday that went by without Faison being cleared it seemed less and less likely that he would be ready to play week one. Faison will add to an already stacked and highpower offense attack with Lanorris Sellers, Nyck Harbor, and Mazeo Bennett. This offense should be able to tear defenses apart in a multitude of different ways and I can't wait to see it in action week one against Virginia Tech!

Let's Talk About Lanorris

One of the main reasons, if not the main reason, that Gamecock football fans are extremely optimistic about this upcoming season is because of returning redshirt sophomore sensation Lanorris Sellers at quarterback. Despite having a slow start to begin the season last year, Lanorris soon looked unstoppable (which he was). The buzz on campus regarding the football team this year is really exciting. Everyone you talk to on campus has super high hopes for the Gamecocks this year, as do I. Last season, South Carolina was one play away from winning in multiple games, which would have led to a playoff berth. This year, not only do fans and students think they can make the playoffs, but maybe make a deep run as well.

Hello, everyone! My name is Charlie Kammeier, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of South Carolina. Ever since I arrived on campus last year, I have been extremely intrigued and interested in the football team here. I am looking forward to an awesome season and can't wait to see how the gamecocks do this year.
