But it has to be Gail. It’s always Gail. She was a self-insert that I carried with me until I was a decent writer. She was created and recreated, scrapped and sharpened until I was happy with the end result. I poured my goddamn heart into this dumbass bitch and I’m happy with who she turned out to be. 

Anyway, Gail. TW: mental illness, death, abuse.

Born in the early 1900′s, thrown in an asylum for being headstrong and rocking the boat. She didn’t thrive, but she made it through. If it hadn’t been for a procedure, she would’ve probably made it out of there alive. But she was too much for her time. She died as she lived – - forgotten and tucked away in a hospital room.

But that was okay! She woke up. Sure, she was alone, but that didn’t matter. Was she scared? Of course. Was she alive? Debatable. But she was able to run, and that’s what she did. She ran until she found other people who had died in the hospital; she ran until she found a home. 

Being a ghost isn’t for the faint of heart. She doesn’t get old. She doesn’t die. She forgets things, sure, but she doesn’t remember a lot of her past. And really, wasn’t that the point of the procedure? She forgot, and she’s happy. She’s happy. 

New York’s a far cry from Cade’s Cove, Tennesse, yet she’s made a little home for herself in the twenty-first century. Most of her friends are gone now – - they’ve disappeared without a trace, though she supposes that’s the price of being a ghost - – but Gail remains. She volunteers. She bothers strangers. She stays rooted on the grounds in which her bones are buried. She couldn’t be happier. 

Bentley, New York isn’t what she expected, but it’s a hell of a whole lot more than she would’ve gotten.
