Okay so I wanna rant a bit. I was scrolling tiktok today and stumbled upon an edit with Dabi/Touya talking to endevour with "who denied me my destiny" sound from kung fu panda. I went into comments as I always do and it was a warzone. This is a screenshot I managed to make before escaping that hellhole.
Please don't attack anyone in the comment section there, they're probably minors and don't deserve death threats or other stupid shit said to them over some fictional characters.
That being said, I think it's a pretty good example of victim blaming. Some could argue that Dabi/Touya is a bad person and made bad decisions as an adult and I totally agree with that. Just because someone's traumatised it doesn't give them the right to hurt others. The way he chose to execute his plan wasn't okay and he hurt many along the way, even other victims of his abuser.
However, saying that a KID is responsible for what happened to them because they didn't listen is the dumbest shit I heard in a good while. Endevour was neglectectful and abusive towards everyone involved in this joke of a family. Saying that the victim is the monster instead of the actual abuser is a big slap in the face to anyone who experienced any sort of violence.
Also, just telling your kid "don't do that" and then leaving them on their own is stupid. There were so many different things endevour could do and so many different ways he could've approached this, but instead he blamed everything on Rei and continued to stick to a method that clearly DID NOT WORK. Just because endevour is trying changes nothing AND THAT'S THE POINT. He cannot undo what he did, EVER. That's the whole point of his arc.
Touya was NOT responsible for ANYTHING that happened back then. He wasn't responsible for burning alive, because no one teached him how to regulate emotions OR control his quirk. He wasn't responsible for being literally kidnapped by AFO, because he wasn't even conscious.
I could bet my remaining 2 cents on my bank account that you wouldn't go back to an abusive household after realising just how toxic it is and seeing your father beat your little brother on what seems like a daily basis. I'm pretty sure you would even come to the same conclusions - "my family doesn't give a single fuck"
I also feel like saying stuff like that under an edit that's literally about Touya's/Dabi's trauma is so annoying and misses the point. It's the same as if someone said:
"Yeah this thing really impacted how I view the world AND myself and ruined me for the rest of my human days and I'm really mad about it. I was a kid who couldn't make informed decisions and only went based on emotions. I feel like I was neglected and that people who were supposed to protect me never bothered to actually try."
"It was actually your fault, they told you not to do it and you did it anyway so you're the actual monster here and besides he's trying to be better now."
Do you see what I mean and how that sounds? 😭
