Could we just appreciate Overlord for a second? I guess you could call this an anime review lol
But this is one of the only few good isekai Anime to date. And BOY is it leagued ahead of its counterparts. Did I MENTION how bad some of these other Isekai (Anime where the main protagonist is teleported to another world) Anime are? However, Overlord breaks the mold of Isekai anime by not only executing their characters properly, but by making the world very interesting by using expectation and reversal.
For example, when Ains gave Enri his goblin horn in Season 1, he expected it to only spawn 20 low level goblins. However, upon using the second one, she managed to summon an entire army of 5000 goblins to her aid, and at much stronger quality as well. The great thing is that the story doesn’t even explain why, but DOES speculate, as if joining the viewer in the game of theorizing and guessing like we all do. But it also serves as a nod to the gaming genre itself, as world of Warcraft holds similar secret elements to the items it uses, which tells us he author knows about his games. THANK GOD!! (*Cough cough* Sword Art Online [I cant even lie, I still loved it since it was my first anime but god it was bad 😂])
Ains can actually be forced into some of the same groups as other Isekai protagonists, which is normal in real life, overpowered in the new world, and considerably dull in real life. However, Ains manages to break the mold of his character by constantly being put into situations where he needs to actually charismatic and cool to everyone, which makes his dead end personality a bit of an inside joke as he needs to roleplay his bit as what he thinks a king would act like. Not to mention, he doesn’t get the full screen time that there do. Now while this may seem like a massive weakness to many, I think that this is a great strength, as each and every one of his appearances is strong, impactful, and lets the watcher know, shit is going down.
Now in comparison to others such as.... what’s his name?
Touya. He is present in every scene, but most of the tension is removed because everyone knows he’s gonna pull out that smartphone and either slip his opponent, target slip them... or... infinitely slip them.......... Yeah.
Another distinction to make, is the sheer amount of characters in the Overlord story. There are tons of them, and each are used to world build while giving the viewer a sheer scale to show how powerful Ains is in comparison, as the show repeatedly shows scenes of now loved characters getting blown away by Ains or one of his guardians. Of course that’s not the only purpose they serve, they show what else is happening around the world as Ains goes about his own business.
In essence, the anime isn’t about a God landing in a new world, it’s about a world with a God landing in it...
And it’s fucking amazing.
10/10 must watch with the Charlotte Approval~!
