Fingers brush along the black and white keys, intimately familiarizing herself to each one across the board as if to say HELLO to the instrument. Introducing herself to it, introducing itself to her. Before she finally pressed down and the chords were strung from inside the box, a string of notes fall into a neat MELODY composed by memory. By what tongue nor mind could say with words. An old song in the form of a PIANO recital by the irresistible urge to play. To lose herself in the playing, until the keys crashed with an unceremonious CLANG when she noticed them watching.

❝ Holy sh you SCARED me. ❞ Nervous laughter played off the slight embarrassment having been caught playing, unsure just how long they had been standing there.

"Mm. He is, actually." Once again, Isaac allowed the smallest of smiles to grace his features at the thought of his younger, yet taller sibling. Ignatius was a peculiar man, but as the woman had teased, a delightful one. There was a certain ditzy quality to him, one that belied his true intellect but perfectly conveyed the childlike wonder he still held on to, despite the years weighing down on him and the cuts and bruises on his knuckles. Isaac suspected that he and Charlotte would get along swimmingly but, alas, Iggy was of little use to a proper investigation, so he shook the thought from his head.

"Please. I'd have to be blind to miss that. Or Detective Dickhead out there."

Isaac pointed towards the doorway for a brief moment, before turning his wrist towards the victim's body.

"Bit of a bitch to make a definitive call on post or anti mortem, though. You can usually tell by the presence or lack of blood, but, you know; smells like fucking pennies in here. I'll need a bit of lab time. But I can for certain tell you-"

Kneeling down beside the body, Isaac took a careful hold of the man's outstretched hand. Already cool to the touch but still yet pliant, he held it gently and carefully. Despite his abrasive exterior, Isaac Doyle was not a callous man.

"Whatever made the cut was fucking sharp. Really sharp. Check the cupboard over there. If the knives are dull as shit, as I suspect, then it's likely the killer brought his own."

The smile remains, if not grow a little more with sentiment, and she recognizes that he must be the ELDEST of the brother spoken about. Considering the familial mockery paired with an air of fondness, only elder siblings tended to tease while the younger were prone to venerate the other. Just an EDUCATED guess. Neither could she really relate, her sibling was currently waiting to be born and she was already ... 15 years older. That was going to be interesting.

She partakes in a proper sip of her TEA, following his gaze to the prosecuted dickhead, and is obliged to agree with the slight cant of her head. Obnoxious and crass, but obviously a mask to disguise the inadequacy felt when in the presence of GENIUSES. Or perhaps hiding some guilt of his own. Time would tell, and she bid hers well, with brief observations that went scoffed at.

If not for the intriguing COMPANY, she likely would have had nothing to do with this case.

❝ Hmmm ... one step ahead. Kitchen knives ARE dull, and though a few are missing, so I had a poke through the rest of his house. He had a habit of losing things dickhead rules robbery but I doubt it. It's too personal. Ring finger missing, blow to the head was close proximity, no forced entry. ❞ She took another sip, ❝ all is FAIR in love and war, am I right ?? ❞

The expression he fixed upon her was a mixture of confusion and disbelief. With his normal hand, he gestured to the whole of himself. “ Do I strike you as the philosophical sort? Innocence means INNOCENCE it really doesn't need to get all complicated. I've never been the kinda guy who dug too deep into all that extra stuff, life is hard enough to get through without adding to it. ”

“ No offense taken. ” Though the words came out quieter than anything else said so far, they were no less honest. If she was able to find some kind of kinship with him based on the fact that they shared this feeling of not belonging, who was he to be upset about it? People who understood him, even a little, could be hard to come by. “ Point taken. Suppose it is easy to disappear in a town that almost no one lingers near, still, keep your eyes open for things that look more like me than you. ”

There was only LAUGHTER to the false interpretation ( though not necessarily false rather a musing than genuine inquiry ), and it managed to ease some of that tension causing ache in her shoulders. ❝ Fair enough. I guess once you lose so - called innocence, the line is a bit blurred. But I'm not a woman of any sort of faith either, it's all BULL - HOCKEY anyway. Life and innocence. ❞

Gaze sweeps over their surroundings once more. Peering into hollowed out buildings, windows were boarded up, while open doors mocked them, and graffiti transcribed peoples' escapes from reality; creative strangers chasing some kind of high only a paint can and vandalism could satisfy. ❝ Somehow that doesn't make me feel ANY better than before. Not that you're scary to me, it's just ... well ... I imagine your eyes would look pretty TERRIFYING in the dark. All glowy in the pitch. ❞ The thought of it sent shivers down her spine.

Part of her knew she should keep her mouth SHUT, that danger lurked around every corner and the discomfort of the public eye already churned her stomach. Then there was that arrogant glint. That bloom of cockiness that she had bested him and his crew, and while she certainly anticipated the scolding of the bureau, she wanted to send a message. A WARNING. Across the papers Red John might pick up and read and ... she wasn't scared of him.

❝ YES. ❞ A smirk played on her lips and she shook her head. ❝ FBI, CBI, police departments all across California. Any agent or officer who's gotten their hands dirty they play dirty and they deal dirty. Torturous, long, arduous, exhausting a lot of words came to mind. Instead, she took the opportunity for awkward pause to gather her thoughts. Thumb running contemplatively across the length of her index finger, and it was only NERVOUSNESS which coaxed the subtle, uncomfortable chuckle from her.

❝ HARD. ❞ She shrugged, head canted to one side. ❝ I wish I could say that it was as predictable as some of the cases I've been involved in, but the reality is not everyday was all blood and fear. Some days he was NICE, some days he brought me gifts so I could entertain myself. It was complex and I had to learn how to ... manage the complexity. ❞ Of course, it wasn't until years later she had found out she had been declared deceased and no one was ACTIVELY looking for her.

She shifted in her chair, ❝ I'm not excusing the things he did just because of a few nice gestures, obviously. You could say one thing one day and he'd laugh, the next day you could say the same thing and ... it was never PRETTY. ❞ Lips then press into a thin line. Most of those un-pretty things couldn't be said, couldn't be uttered, lest the crowd and her interviewer might wretch. ❝ I did what I was told, bid my time, mostly playing CONCERTOS for him. I think that was mostly why I he wanted me, but I don't think any of us will ever learn his real reasons. If he had any at all. ❞
