@chartreuser
“Mhm, sounds about right.” It was a description that certainly fit her like a glove. “And maybe you should drop a call by her. Might help more than she thinks the alcohol does. She seems to be doing a lot of it for you, after all.” Smiles and stands, wanting to grab his coat and head out now that his shift has ended. “Going to stay awhile?”
"Not really. I was planning to fetch her after uni earlier tonight, but she said she was going to stay back and continue working." A guilty look crossed his face as he reflected on Eli's statement, fingers toying with a coin before he stands up to leave. "You leaving as well? I ought to find Victoria. She's going to work herself to death before she knows it."
“I had a good feeling we were talking about the same person. Especially since she’s mentioned a brother before.” He noted and added, “And I only work here twice a week so there’s a good chance she might come here more often than a simple bartender knows. Name’s Eli.” Like Victor, he kept the introduction short followed by a simple nod in greeting. He’d say it was nice to finally meet him but he just pulled the guy off another just a couple minutes ago. “Aren’t you two living together? I can’t imagine you’d go more than a couple days without bumping into each other.”
"Well, maybe. Likes to pout, vintage curls, red lipstick, red nails?" He smiled, "Pretty, sort of, flirty alcoholic? If so, then yeah. That's my sister. And nah, she likes to hop bars." The male scratched his head, leaning forward after uncrossing his legs. "I moved out a few years ago. I drop by Vickie's house most of the time, and sleep over every once in a while, but I keep to myself when she's stressed out by work. Like now."
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU ARE IN A BAD MOOD?
"That would be my sister, of course."
“You just mentioned her.” He mused, giving him an understanding smile in return. “And you both have a similar vibe about you. Occupational sense, I guess. And yeah, see her around the same time every week. She’s a regular here during one of my shifts.” Eli might’ve wondered why the younger sibling wouldn’t know, if he wasn’t a bartender who knew that few shared their drinking habits with family. Or at least, the details of when and where.
"Huh. Well, loads of people are called Victoria, y'know. Wouldn't be a coincidence if the sister I have managed to clash names with a client of yours." Victor shrugged, noting his sister's schedule from the bartender. "Once every week's an improvement from last time, I guess. I'm Victor, by the way." It'd been such a long time since he actually saw his sister, though he'd talked to her often on the phone. "I bet you see my sister more than I do, these days. Been a long time since we've last talked."
Making sure the other guy left, as he witnessed enough to know that lanky here didn’t start the fight at least, he kept his attention elsewhere before focusing it on the now seated patron. From first glance the other seemed fine, for the most part, and didn’t look to need medical attention. Nevertheless, he told a waitress to fetch him a bag of ice. “Never been in a bar fight before?” He mused as he sat down at one of the vacant chairs at the table. “Otherwise you’d know that we let our patrons handle themselves instead of making them call their parents. That or kick them out.” The corners of his mouth tugged into an amiable grin as he observed the student. “So you’re Victoria’s brother. Heard a bit about you.”
"Yes, but not in this one, of course. The other one made me call my sister because they thought that a trip to the hospital was required." Letting out a scoff before tapping his fingers on the tabletop, he thanked the waitress with a smile before pressing it to his temple. He'd been in less than 5 bar fights, of course, but none of them were started by him. The bartender was kind of right, he supposed.
Raising an eyebrow as he heard the other mention his sister, Victor cracked a confused smile at him, unsure if he should've known this person. "...How do you know I'm her brother? And I suppose you've met her before?" Dear lord, don't be her newest boyfriend. I actually like you. "Not surprising, I suppose. She makes friends everywhere she goes."
This would happen just before his shift ended.
The photography/temporary bartender mentally groaned as he hauled himself from the back of the bar counter to break the fight up. Unfortunately, it was five minutes till his replacement comes in and none of the waitresses were strong enough to effectively stop bar fights of this size. Thus the job was left to him, the photographer that was fit but didn’t exactly enjoy participating or messing with conflict. Course that didn’t mean he won’t if he had to.
Hooking elbows underneath the dominating male’s armpits, he dragged the surprisingly smaller yet vicious guy off the other before blood would leave a stain big enough to be noticed. He kept the enraged drunk from taking more swings at the guy — who was busy trying to back away and stand — and made sure the younger fella wouldn’t switch his target to himself, and barked an order to calm down loudly enough for Victor to hear. Doing his best to keep his own patience in check, he waited for the other to calm enough before letting him go. After the other participant was taken away by another employee, anyway.
"Well. That was tedious." Snapping out of it once the bartender had shouted loudly in his ear, Victor staggered back to his seat, poking around his face to feel the injuries he may have got himself into. A broken nose, sure, but nothing too serious that would require him to stay in the hospital. Squeezing out the glass shard stuck in the palm of his hand, the male carefully placed it onto the table before sucking out the remaining blood with his mouth. He wasn't too concerned about himself, anyway.
Crossing his legs before drinking the rest of his drink. Victor wiped away the rest of his blood away from his face before waving goodbye to his sister's ex, who was probably going to the hospital for a broken radius and ulna. Well, at least he wouldn't be seeing him for a while, now. "Before you ask me to call my parents, I'm 24. And Victoria is most likely still at work, so..."
He hadn't planned on getting into a bar fight, oh no. God knows how badly his sister was worried the last time he did, though the concern was mainly for the person he had punched. Then Vickie had decided to lecture him about how studying for a doctorate gave him an obvious advantage because medical knowledge. Not his fault he knew where to hit punches. People just underestimate him too much because he was boney.
But would hitting his sister's ex-boyfriend for calling Vickie a slut and other things be something she wouldn't endure? Maybe, but still. He could chalk this all up to being drunk, especially since his sister didn't know he could probably drink people twice his size under the table. And didn't she knew how to pick boys? His punches were only shabby so far, with only a few decent punches up to his nose. Don't you know how to aim?
Ducking yet another poorly-aimed hit, Victor decided to pin down the poor guy for a few punches to the face, meanwhile pulling some muscles on his neck. Being in a fight is just fucking tiring. Don't know why drunkards do this all the time.
“Well, at least your distaste of me isn’t for nothing.” He smiled faintly, tapping a finger on the table before speaking. “I do admit that I find my own needs more important than save for one, because the first person who gets affected is myself, as I’m sure you understand.” His smile widened as she glanced at him, though perhaps the innocent look may have been lost on her. “And you’re blaming me for not returning your friend’s feelings? Look, at least I’m not leading her on. It’s not my fault that I don’t have any desire to be in a relationship. At least I’m polite. What would you do if a guy continuously expresses an interest in you even if you’ve told him ‘no’ before?” Victor scrunched up his eyebrows, running a hand through his hair before crossing his legs.
Well, yeah, he hadn’t dumped her friend, he hasn’t led her on, and he wasn’t rude to her in the slightest, so why was she complaining? “Look, I know you care about your friend, and I’ll be the first to commit murder if somebody was a jerk to Victoria, but now this is the problem. I don’t think I have done anything that warrants you to think that I find your friend unpleasant to be around. That’s just my neutral face. And that’s comforting to know, though I haven’t really felt bad when you told me you disliked me. It’s your freedom. Dislike me however you want.”
Although she had been prepared to throw herself gracefully back into studying so she could spend the coming weekend doing anything but, she found herself lunged into what could almost be labeled as a ramble. If it were not a composed ramble anyway. Maybe a mini unplanned defensive speech. Nevertheless, he got her to look up again and stare at him blankly as he let it all out.
“Anyone ever tell you, you talk a lot?” She curiously asked out loud, unable to help herself. Though in retrospect, it did manage to get her lips to twitch into his first half smirk of the day. “Calm down, playboy. I’m not blaming you or calling you out on anything. You’re polite, I get it. Don’t want to hurt her feelings and thinking it won’t lead her on. Well, you’re wrong.” Tilts head and gives him an I-don’t-know-what-to-tell-ya look, “Girls are dumb. Crush gives a girl the time of day, even from being polite, and she’s already planning out their first anniversary. Even being acknowledged can sometimes lead a girl on.”
Deciding she wasn’t going to get anything done, she shut her notebook and started packing up her things. “To answer your question, I’d stomp on the guy’s heart and give him a clear message. At least that way he’ll be able to look away and move on. I’m not the type to murder if you’re a jerk to my friend. Be a jackass for the wrong reasons and sure, I’ll break one of your limbs, but if it’s to help her than I would understand. And finally, you did feel a little bad about my disliking you, otherwise you wouldn’t have approached the issue in the first place.” Glances up from closing her bag and looks at knowingly, “Not used to knowing someone like me who isn’t affected by ‘politeness’ are you?” A rhetorical question.
Desiree stood and shouldered her bag. “I’m heading out so… ‘til next time, I guess. Unless you need me for anything else.” Lips curled into a polite smile — an amicable mocking, she’d call it.
“You’re self-centered.” She scribbled something down in her notes and circled another before shrugging slim shoulders. “I’m not saying anything is wrong with that since I’m pretty self-centered myself, but every time I see you it’s only because my friend is practically magnetized to you whenever you’re around.” Sighing, she gave him an uninterested glance, “And I don’t like seeing her hang off you while you look ready to be anywhere else.”
Tucking a couple strands hair behind her ear as she looked down again, she added almost as if a side thought, “I don’t dislike you, if that makes you feel any better. Just can’t say I like you either.”
"Well, at least your distaste of me isn't for nothing." He smiled faintly, tapping a finger on the table before speaking. "I do admit that I find my own needs more important than save for one, because the first person who gets affected is myself, as I'm sure you understand." His smile widened as she glanced at him, though perhaps the innocent look may have been lost on her. "And you're blaming me for not returning your friend's feelings? And that's comforting to know, though I haven't really felt bad when you told me you disliked me. It's your freedom. Dislike me however you want."
“Hmm.” The one note hum slipped through closed lips as she sat there and merely observed him for a second or two. Then down her gaze went, back to dutifully and dully study her notes as she answered plainly, “It’s a neutral expression,” and added after a noncommittal pause, “and I don’t like you.” Well, at least it wasn’t said with any malice.
"Your reasoning?" He questioned after flipping open his own notebook, mimicking her actions before leaning back in his chair. Victor wasn't one to take offense, so why bother feeling insulted? There was plenty more people who liked him, including her friend. Bad news for her if she feels unhappy about his presence.
“Upset?” The nonchalant student idly tapped the butt of her pencil rhythmically to the spine of her notebook as eyes drifted to the intruding presence. Intruding, but not completely loathed as the absent staring at her previous lecture notes and utterly unappealing textbook content were about to make her mind click off completely. “Do I seem upset?” Desiree countered the question in return, not looking too invested in the conversation as it wasn’t one that was unfamiliar. Have a naturally neutral, perhaps even bored expression like her’s and people often get the wrong impression. Or rather the right one mixed with a bit more ill intent than what was really there.
"Yes." He replied bluntly, shrugging as he leaned forward. "Yes you do, actually. Or maybe that's your default expression, but I'm still curious as to why your attitude borders hostile whenever your friend Sheila talks to me." Victor hadn't meant to be conceited, but he wouldn't be lying if he said that the majority of people he met seemed to be charmed by him. And he hadn't meant to offend her, heck -- he barely did anything to piss her off! "Just tell me that it's your standard face whenever you meet somebody that you know for six months, and I'll gladly leave you alone. I just want to make sure I didn't piss you off in any way."
"Something tells me you don't like seeing me around." Sliding into the seat across Desiree, the male attempted a faint smile at the girl, trying to make himself as friendly as possible. Out of all the times the girl -- what was her name? Sheila? -- tried to talk to him, she had remained silent as usual, though he could chalk that up to her personality. Some people just didn't like to talk, he supposed, but when he'd seen this girl around for six months and she never bothered to speak anything else but the standard polite conversation, something was off. Was he really that intimidating? "Did I somehow upset you?"

The important people in his life are often crazy, that much is clear.
They’re different facets of each other, an interesting study in how the same person would turn out given the circumstances of different parents. That’s what he thinks, in the least, as they all seem to be pretty cannibals that devour men’s hearts as they come.
He lets out sounds of acknowledgement at their irritation as unwanted lovers harass them with words of pleas of no effect, and the roll of eyes as fingers wrap round glass after glass of red poison.
It makes him wonder, sometimes, if they would be happier if remains of lipstick cling onto his mouth instead.
the potential you'll be that you'll never see the promises you'll only make
“I’m glad you’re my sister,” are the words that spill from his mouth when dinner is lazily served as instant noodles, longings for carefully-tampered substances melting in their mouths discarded in favour of convenience. “I’d be obsessed with you if you weren’t.”
Victor stares as his sister’s eyebrow lifts delicately, her lips curving slightly as thick liquid runs over them without spoiling the carnivorous red it sports, eyes responding the way it would have never have if they weren’t related by blood. “That’s because we’re too alike, you narcissist,” she says, “Go and find someone else unrelated to you.”
He responds with silence, but his sister pats his hand in a way that says she knows he’s not over her yet, in a way that he knows she wouldn’t treat other guys because none of them is her brother.
If our hearts would feel anything other than the love of siblings, thinks Victor, life would have been too easy.
drink up with me now and forget all about the pressure of days do what I say and I'll make you okay and drive them away
He doesn’t know how long he can tolerate the flow of unworthy men who attempt to cage his sister into the prison of marriage without threatening to dissect them after they’ve mysteriously fallen ill, because he’s never humoured any of their wishes to keep Victoria Blanc to themselves.
“How overprotective,” Victoria chuckles each time as she paints her nails the colours of death, which should have been enough to have fend off unknowing men trying to get under her sister’s skirts. “I will be married one day, you know.”
“Ah, but not yet. Not to men I dislike, Vickie.” His sister pokes lovingly at his forehead, corners of her lips twisting into a smile, but it’s obvious that she disapproves of his statement, regardless of the good intentions he harbours. “Not when you’re still in love with freedom. Why stop me? I’ll make things easier for you.”
Don’t base your outlook on my love life on yours; are the words that hangs in the silence between them as he rests his head on her shoulder.
He ignores the fact that her sister’s claws are as sharp as his, that he’s as damaged as her when it comes to his sister’s favourite game of possession when she presses a kiss to his head.
the images stuck in your head
People tend to be scarred if they mess around with their hearts too often.
The Blanc siblings aren’t an exception.
Maybe that’s why they spend most nights drinking. Runs in the family, after all.
the people you've been before that you don't want around around anymore
He was discretion and control at 16; tentative and hesitant at 18; reckless and apathetic at 20.
Victor wonders where those parts of him had been, until he remembers that they disappeared with the woman when she laid in the arms of an older man, disappeared when Vickie went back to being the main focus of his life.
Now, he doesn’t know what he is anymore.
that push and shove and won't bend to your will i'll keep them still
He remembers the taste of love as ethanol on his tongue some nights, when charcoal hair and pale skin is all he sees as he fucks strangers on unfamiliar beds.

“I’m sure you’d be happier if you found someone to be with,” Laura says over a glass of water, a beautiful example of how a female friend of a deranged male should be like when he asks how to rid of the boredom in his life. “You’re on your way to being a doctor, cute, that’s basically what girls want in guys, I guess. I wouldn’t know.”
I’m already with my sister, is what he thinks but doesn’t say, for surely Laura wouldn’t understand that answer, the attachment you have to your sibling where the both of you were left to fend for each other and take care of yourselves without anyone left in the world to help. Not incestuous, but perhaps it would have been easier for the both of us that way.
His sister’s interests were forever in front of his, but he don’t think she reciprocates.
No matter, he supposes. The concept of finding someone that does is appalling, but it does make him happy –
Unless they want an older, richer man, of course, but who doesn’t?
where i'm seeing you there with your hands in the air waiting to finally be caught
Laura’s a lesbian. Vickie’s his sister. Catherine is married. Sharon is dead.
People still wonder why he’s single. The effort that needs to be taken to find people as beautiful as they are would be too exhausting for him.
He’s better off looking out for his sister, who’s too busy looking ahead to notice that her high heels crossed the line of happiness.
Victor Blanc never fails to warn her, but she moves onward regardless.
drink up one more time and i'll make you mine keep you apart, deep in my heart separate from the rest, where i like you the best and keep the things you forgot
He wishes that it was that easy to fall in love with someone. He knows his sister’s gone too far to head back, but she reminds him that he’s male, that everything’s easier when people have penises, but he thinks that it’s a blessing that she doesn’t feel love anymore.
To him, in the least.
At least somebody shares his loneliness. Was he selfish? Maybe.
But Victoria Blanc is his sister.
She could stop being somebody’s wife, or somebody’s girlfriend, but she’ll always be his sister, and that’s always going to be how it is, and the resemblance runs far too deep for any of them to deny it.
He doesn’t acknowledge how easy it would be for her to leave him as he is, someone who doesn’t have an identity rather than Victoria Blanc’s brother, but it’s easy to lie to yourself when there’s no one else to love.

PROMPT-01
He felt worn out.
Sometimes he'd forget that there was more to life than staying up to study for a doctorate in law, that he once saw himself at 24 doing something like travelling the world.
Or writing a book.
He was never one to think big, and while a book might require much more effort than he had to offer, he'd be content to just settle with writing, sliding the tip of his pen over the rough surface of his favourite notebook - it was satisfying.
Victoria liked to paint, so be it, but he liked to write, and even though it really didn't wasn't as nice to look at as a painting, it made him happy.
Unlike filling your brain with details about how the legal system worked.
He knew his sister would agree - they were all artists, his family, but they prioritized income over happiness, the guarantee of a worry-free future than a happy, carefree one.
Somewhere along the way of his childhood he began to believe that, when his amazingly talented sister chose to get her bachelor in banking and finance, instead of going to art school, instead of opening that gallery she's always dreamed of.
And him?
He'd ripped every single piece of work he had written, all the words, the full stops, the semi-colons - gone.
It felt like he was slowly ripping his heart open then, when he realized that his sister was right, that he wouldn't be able to support himself with the career he wanted so bad - with the failure of his parents as a frightening example of how awful things could go wrong if you didn't stop to think about the future.
So he inhales that deep, sharp breath, and shifts his attention back to the hoard of textbooks he has before him, and forgets about what he wants-
It's what he needs that's important.
