Faces in the Sky || One Shot
I lay down in the grass, my eyes trained on the sky. The faces would be coming, and from the number of canons, there would be no shortage of them. I rested my head on my pack, and gripped onto my trident. I'd already slipped one of the throwing knives into my waist, ready to be pulled out if I needed to use it quickly.
It didn't take long for the faces to begin to appear, and I couldn't help but gasp at the first face that appeared. It belonged to Charlotte. Out of everybody I'd met so far, she had been the one I'd expected to take the win. And she was already dead. There had never been a future for our friendship, but it was a friendship none the less, and I bit my lip as I realised I wasn't going to see her again. If I was sad about Charlotte, there were no words for the next face I recognised.
I felt like I was watching my sister get swept into the rocks all over again. Time was in slow motion, and numbness overcame my body. My mouth had fallen open, but I had no words and nobody to speak them to. Nobody would understand. This was the second time I'd lost someone. And it was the second time I was supposed to be looking after them like I'd promised. The rest of the faces blurred into one, I didn't care about them. They were nothing to me.
"I'm sorry, Mika," my voice came out in a slow, damaged whisper. I shut my eyes, if only to stop tears appearing; the pain in my chest was unbearable. "I love you."
I should have told her all along. I should have told her after that kiss on the beach, back at home. I should have made sure she knew that for every second I spent with her. I could only hope that wherever she was now, she could hear me. And that she would somehow forgive me.
I reached out beside me, running my hand along the ground until I found a rock. I sat up slowly, and threw it hard across the water, and it landed with a thud on the other side, far away. Whoever did this to her - whoever did this to me - was going to pay for it. And they were going to suffer. I lay back onto the ground, and covered my face with my hands which had involuntarily formed fists.
For probably the first time, it truly sunk in that I was in the hunger games.
For definitely the first time, I knew I had to win.

“It’ll be alright Chase..” I placed a hand on his shoulder, reassuring him.
No.
What are you doing?
Axel!
Go away!
You had your turn, now it’s mine!
Back off, and leave me alone!
I retracted my hand almost as quickly as I placed it there.
He was fighting his way through. How is he strong enough? I couldn’t hold him back much longer if he kept on fighting this strong. This is my body now, not his. That’s how I intend it to stay.
“Okay, we need somewhere to make plans. What other equipment do you have?”
For a second, I could have sworn it was the old Axel across from me. For a second. Before I knew it, it seemed things were back to normal - or, at least, the new version of normal. I opened my bag and checked through again.
"Throwing knives. Night vision goggles. A bandana, extra t-shirt..." I pulled out the square of paper that I'd decided to hide in my pocket instead of my pack, just in case I lost the bag, "and this might help." I passed it across to Axel. "It's a map of the arena."
If there was one thing I didn't want getting into the wrong hands, it was that. It wasn't a huge arena, but it would still take tributes some time to get their bearings properly. With this, we had an advantage.
"Not a lot of places to hide... I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing."
Tread Carefully || Chase & Axel
“Fine. More for me.” He would not like what I was doing to his body. But it wasn’t his anymore. It was mine. I thought back to the bloodbath, and I did recall seeing Namika at the start of it, but not at the end. I don’t recall seeing anyone at the end of it. I didn’t pay attention.
“Uhmm.. I’m not sure. Well, I did at the start, but I didn’t really keep my eye on anyone. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”
He could be a worthy ally. But only if he didn’t piss me off too much.
“Chase. Allies? It’d help.”
I knew what he meant. My eyes would be fixed on the sky tonight without doubt. The sound of every cannon since the bloodbath had ended was still lingering around in my head, knowing that one of them could have been for her. The girl I'd come here to protect.
I listened to his proposal. The first time I'd met Axel, I thought he would be a good ally to have, but this wasn't Axel. This was someone different to the guy I remembered from the suites. Either way, it didn't take long to make up my mind. If he was on my side, he wouldn't try and kill me - as long as I wasn't stupid. And who knows, maybe the old Axel would make an appearance sometime. If that happened, I'd want to be around to see it.
"Allies." I nodded at him. The next few days were about to get interesting.
Tread Carefully || Chase & Axel
I slithered my hand down to the pack and it was where he said it was. The flap lifted up, and inside I found the bread and the beef jerky, just like he had said so. He had earned his breathing space, so I let go of his neck, but wielded my dagger and pointed it at him.
“Don’t try anything too hasty, Chase. Or I’ll have your head off quicker than you can say 4.”
I bit in to a piece of beef jerky, then chewed on the rest of it. “I saw some fruit in those trees. We’ll get some of that later. But what about drinks?”
I checked through his pack, and found nothing. The river was not clean enough to drink, so I was left with one option.
I placed the dagger to my left forearm, then sliced a slit in it. Big enough so it started to bleed, but small enough so it wouldn’t be a fatal wound. I then started lapping up the blood.
“You want some?”
I gasped as he let go of my throat, letting air fill my lungs again. I backed away and picked up my trident that was laying beside the pack, using it to lean on.
I watched him search for a drink, but he came up empty. The soda must have fallen out as I was swimming across the river. Perfect.
"I, uh..." I watched him use the blood to quench his thirst, "I think I'm okay. Thanks." I attempted to smile politely but it couldn't quite disguise my distaste at what he was doing. The juices from the fruit would work for me when we went for them later.
I thought about my next question for a while before I asked it. In some ways, I didn't want him to say yes. Not when he was the version of Axel that was sitting infront me of. But I just couldn't resist it.
"Have you seen Mika?" I asked, regretting not making some prior plans with her. I needed to know that he'd seen her leave the cornucopia. I needed to know that she was alive.

The second he spoke, my stomach growled. Lucky for him, he was right. I released my grasp from his throat slightly, so that he could move around. If he did have food, then maybe we could sort something out here. Something that would involve us both keeping our strength.
“I’m not dumb. I know that the second I let go, you’ll attack, so tell me. Where’s the food. Give me the food, and I’ll let go of your neck.”
I was thirsty as well. But from what he smelled like, he had been sick recently. My guess is the water. Being form 4, I would’ve thought he’d of known what was clean or not, but I already had something in mind of how to get something to hydrate me.
“Come on. Food.”
He had a point. Why should he trust me? We were in the hunger games, and any relationships that were formed before the cornucopia were probably dissolved completely. Namika flashed across my mind at the thought of relationships, but now wasn't the time. Not when I could feel his grip tightening again.
"There. In the pack." I pointed to the grass behind me. "There's bread in there. Beef jerky, too."
Tread Carefully || Chase & Axel
The air outside was still warm, and I was getting hungry, and thirsty. I spotted some fruit on the trees, but I couldn’t be bothered to climb one and pick some fruit, so instead, I would go hunting. Maybe find myself a meal or two.
The rivers flowing could not silence the break of the branch. There was no doubt about it, someone was here. I dropped to the ground instantly, and started to crawl over to where the break came from. I saw a tip of blonde hair from behind the grass, and stood up, ready to pounce, when I saw Chase. A part of me still remembered him. That part of me that was friends with him. That part of me that is non-existent now.
In one fluid motion, I dived down next to him, and grabbed him around the neck, just enough so he could breathe, but also enough so he was under my control. I began whispering in his ear.
“Shush, Chase. Don’t think I couldn’t kill you here and now. The only reason you’re still alive, is because him. The other me was friends with you. So there is still that small bit of me still hanging on to you. Why is your life worthwhile? Why shouldn’t I just snap your neck here and now?”
I choked as my throat was squeezed tightly in his grasp. I could have struggled against him, or tried to attack him to get out of his grip, but I had a feeling that would just enrage him further.
My mind raced to find try and reason with him, to come up with some logical explanation as to why he shouldn't kill me there and then. I had an idea, but I wasn't sure whether it would be enough.
"Fo...od" I struggled through short breath. His grip loosened enough for me to speak, but not enough to make it any less painful. "You've got to be hungry... I can help." My pack was still lying in the grass, concealed from his view. If he killed me, the chances were that he wouldn't know it was there.
Tread Carefully || Chase & Axel
I lay between the grass, watching Axel as he moved around. There was something almost animalistic in his movements, and I felt sick as I realised why. We were in the arena, and he didn't have his tablets. If anything was certain in that moment, it was that he was lethal. I thought back to the way he'd nearly killed Damien when we were locked in the room, and shook the thought out of me head as I realised it might be me this time. Thoughts entered my head about maybe being able to talk him down, or being able to escape if it didn't work, but I doubted it. I continued to crawl along in the grass as he moved, but froze as a small branch in the grass snapped as I moved on top of it. My breathing quickened, my mind racing to figure out what to do. There was no way he wouldn't have heard that. There was no way he wouldn't know someone was near.
And Into The Fire || One Shot
I groaned in pain as my stomach tightened. It felt like daggers, and I had to double check somebody hadn't just stabbed me in the back. Before I knew it, I was doubled over, vomit spewing out of my mouth. Evidently I'd been wrong about the water. How could I have been so stupid? Of course things weren't going to be that easy. And as if surviving against 23 other bloodthirsty tributes wasn't hard enough, now I was being sick everywhere too.
When I was confident my gut was empty and I'd finished vomiting, I decided I needed to move. I had no idea where the other tributes were, and I was pretty loud. Anybody could have heard me. I decided to move back north. There wasn't a chance in hell I was heading back inside the temple, I couldn't see any tributes from where I was and my best bet was that the majority were still held up inside. Going in there alone was suicide. I would still head north, but with caution.
There was sick down myself, and I decided to swim straight across the river instead of going back the way I'd come and using the bridge. It'd clean me up, and be quicker. Within minutes of climbing in - and making sure not to get any in my mouth - I was on the other side, slightly downstream given the current. I walked slowly and quietly forward, but stopped and dropped to the ground when I saw another tribute not too far away.
It was a tribute I recognised, but there was something... different about them. I knew instantly who it was, and I knew instantly he was dangerous. He wasn't the Axel I knew, but a different form of himself. I parted the grass slightly, staring through at him. I would have to be careful in my approach. He might be dangerous, but he was still my friend. I could only hope the new Axel would remember that.
Out Of The Frying Pan... || One Shot
I tried my best to ignore the screams echoing from the building behind me; I couldn't bare to think of who they might belong to. I cursed myself for not staying behind and searching for the few people I felt I could trust. Even more so for Mika, but I knew she would have done the sensible thing and got what she wanted, then got out of there. Either by herself or with him. I would find her later. I would make sure she was okay.
I focussed my attention instead on steady footsteps pounding the ground. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. As long as I could hear them, I was alive, and I was moving. But so was somebody else. And by the sounds of it, they were gaining on me. I chanced a look over my shoulder, and saw Deja Vu running in the same direction as me, away from what I now recognised as a huge temple of some kind.
It crossed my mind to confront him. Killing tributes was an integral part of the games, and at some point I'd no doubt end up putting my skills with my trident to the test, but it didn't have to happen yet. I would find somewhere safe, get my bearings, and figure out my next move. I sped up as best I could, crossing a bridge and running west, stopping by a zen garden. The river bank, hiding among the trees and the tall grass, would do for now. I pushed my way through the trees, and sat down next to the water. Even though the grass must have been two feet tall, the other tributes would probably be able to see me from across the river if I sat up too high - but I would be able to see them, too. I'd have time to run.
I stuck my trident into the ground and pulled out my pack, inspecting the items inside. I rifled through my bag, and saw throwing knives, night vision goggles, food, a t-shirt, and a bandana. I smiled as I pulled out a square of paper, and realised it was a map of the arena. I inspected it thoroughly, relating my position to the paths on the map. I could guess where other tributes were, but I didn't want to mark the map until I was certain. I wiped sweat away from my face with my hand, grateful that I'd managed to find water. I didn't know if it was drinkable or not, but I'd be willing to guess it was. I lay on my front, concealing myself in the grass, and crawled down to the water's edge. I dipped my hand in and splashed my face, the cool water an instant relief. I took a few mouthfuls before crawling further up the river bank and laying down on my elbows, facing the temple. If they were coming, I'd see them coming. For now, all I could do was form some kind of survival plan.

Caesar Flickerman: The beds are quite comfortable. There are days I'd like to not ever leave, you know. And if I know the Game Makers at all, I know you're right! Speaking of, are you prepared for the arena Chase?
Chase: I'm definitely prepared for the arena, Caesar! There's no denying I've got some tough competition in there, but it's all about playing the game, right? It's called the hunger 'games', after all. *Turns head towards the crowd* I might just surprise you!
Caesar Flickerman: *chuckles* Well then we expect to see some surprises, Mr. Dawson. Can you give us a little hint as to what you're bringing to the table?
Chase: I'll do my best not to disappoint! And as for what I'm going to bring to the table... can you keep a secret?
Caesar Flickerman: *leans in and nods* Why yes, yes I think I can. Can we folks? *crowd murmurs and nods* Tell us, Chase, give us a little something.
Chase: *leans in towards Caesar* Well... so can I *winks, and laughs sitting up again* I'm sure you know better than anybody the dangers of revealing your plans too soon! Let's just say I'm a true District 4 tribute when it comes to what I can do with certain weapons, and underestimating me when I have my hands on them might not be a good move.
Caesar Flickerman: *laughs out loud* Oh you tricked me indeed! I think it goes without saying that we'll be watching you out there. Good luck! *shakes his hand again* Let's give the boy a hand! *crowd cheers*

Three's a Crowd || Punishment {Side Para}
My hands scurried around frantically, searching for a way I could get him off of me, and get back in the fight. He thought he was doing well when he kneed be. He was wrong. Very wrong. That was all it took. One knee. One more action. I’d lost it.
I couldn’t think straight. My words were jumbling up in my head. It was time. “Damien..” I choked, “You.. You don’t know what you’ve just done.” He was ready. He had been holed up in the back of my mind for over 10 years, and now he was finally free. He wanted blood. Lots of it.
My eyes focused on one thing, and one thing only. The door on the opposite side of the room to me. That was my goal. Damien was stood in the way. “No! Don’t do this!” I yelled at myself, Damien looked puzzled. “Go away!” I kicked Damien’s legs from under him, and as he fell towards me, I stuck my legs in the air, so that his stomach landed directly on the balls of my feet.
I stood up and picked up the bat. “Axel! Get away!” I slapped myself on the side of the head, “No! It’s not your time!” He wouldn’t go though. He had his mind set on one thing. I only had time to warn Chase to move before it kicked in. “Chase! Move!”
I snapped. My whole world came crashing down in a frenzy. The pills had completely worn off, and it was finally time for our reuniting. Damien was huddled on the floor, protecting his stomach. The baseball bat was lifted above my head, and I crashed it down on to his legs. Each impact satisfied my needs. I swung. It landed. I cheered. I swung. It landed. I cheered. It swung. It landed. I cheered. It swung. It landed. It snapped.
I had heard a crunch under the bat, and by Damien’s scream, it sounded like it hurt, good. I turned towards the door, and had to fight myself just to start walking in the direction of it. But he had forgotten how good it felt, so he turned back to Damien for more.
“Round 2.” I growled, not being able to stop myself.
For the second time, I'd let Damien hurt me. The pain didn't last long, though. It quickly turned to anger. Pure hatred running through my veins. I was ready to retaliate when I noticed Axel beating the shit out of him.
I couldn't find words for what I was witnessing. It was animalistic, the way he was enjoying hurting Damien so much. I didn't hesitate for a second when he told me to move, jumping out the way so he could get to the door. I watched as his hand almost reached the handle... but he didn't push it, instead turning with a devilish look burning in his eyes. My eyes flicked back to Damien on the floor, and I knew I had to do something. I jumped infront of Axel, trying my best to calm him down. My hands grabbed his shoulders hard, trying to stop him.
"Axel! No! He isn't worth it!" I had to shout to make myself heard over the noise in the room. "He isn't worth the trouble you'll get into!" I stared at him, urging him to stop himself, to try and control himself, before turning back to Damien myself. I kicked down hard on his stomach before crouching by his side and taking his neck in my hands, squeezing hard.
"Don't make the mistake of thinking this means I care one single bit about how you die. I couldn't care less about how a waste of air like you loses their life, I just don't want to see my friend get into trouble." I pulled his neck up, then forced it down, smashing the back of his head into the ground, before jumping out the way. I could only hope Axel would control himself enough to not murder this boy tonight.
