storyofthislife :
i just want to sit in front of the ocean for a little while
“Be a life guard, they said,” Novalee sighed as she slathered more lotion on her shoulders. For the fifth time of the day. “It’ll be fun, they said. But, did anyone consider the fact that I’m a ginger?” she pointed at her bright red cheeks that were burned from days in the sun. With or without tons of protection, she ended up hurting and peeling. “Because I sure as heck did not consider that.”
ronnie shared an empathetic lopsided grin with the redhead, digging out the big floppy beach hat she carried around but never used from her bag before handing it up to the girl. “here, this should at least help a little,” she shrugged, figuring it was the best she could do in the moment. “invest in some good coconut oil for the burns and that should definitely help, i’ve had my fair share of them from being out here all day and that shit? works wonders.”
Taking a sip from her no longer full martini glass, Alicia turned to the person next to her, smiling. “Did you know that alcohol was linked to living a longer life?” she smiled even wider, knowing full well it probably wasn’t an accurate fact. “There was some study with Alzheimers or something. I think it was only for wine though. I hope that it applies to vodka and tequila as well.” she shrugged, taking another sip of her dirty. “Though, do I really want to live that long?”
on what had to have been his fourth beer, wesley gave some real thought to alicia’s scientific evidence, to which he tipped his head back and forth as if he were mulling it over. “i’ve got a feeling that may only be for wine - i’ve had some fucked up vodka and tequila nights where i was convinced i’d be dying, not living forever.” he said with a laugh, but his brows shot up at her following question. “you’re telling me you’d pass up making it to 100? think of the huge bash you could throw in the nursing home.”
Cara fiddled one more time with the driver’s handle, but, as she expected, the door remained locked in place. Her purse taunted her from the passenger seat, and her brows furrowed in frustration with no keys and no phone. She whipped around and leaned her back against the car in a moment of self-pity before she noticed someone else in the parking lot.
as wesley was making it back to his jeep, bag in hand from the quick trip to the convenience store, he noticed a familiar brunette seemingly stressed and leaning against her car parked beside his. “hey! it’s cara, right?” he greeted with a grin, tossing his bag into the back of his car before stepping beside her, “too presumptuous to guess car troubles or what?”
“Music really does have the power to move people,” Levi said absentmindedly to the person at the next table, looking up from his doodles as he spoke. “For example, Maroon 5 is playing in this cafe, so I’m going to another.”
looking up from her phone, cold brew sitting beside it, she couldn’t help but chuckle at the boy’s assessment. “what? moves like jagger doesn’t make you wanna get up and dance on tables?” she asked with a smirk, “this could be a fluke though, they usually have a good alt mix here. i blame the new sixteen year old they’re training.” ronnie said, nodding towards the young, bubbly girl behind the counter.
“Hey,” Taj said loudly, rushing to a person down the aisle and grabbing their arm. “Have you seen a guy about this tall with brown hair, wearing a green bro tank? He took the last package of the pamplemousse La Croix from my cart.”
glancing down at the green tank top he was wearing, and the box of pamplemousse tucked between his arm and chest, wesley looked up at taj with regret in his eyes, running a hand through his hair until he broke into a wide smile. “oh - hey taj! didn’t see ya there,” he chuckled, “that wasn’t your cart back there ... left unattended for a few seconds, was it?”
“Hey,” Taj said loudly, rushing to a person down the aisle and grabbing their arm. “Have you seen a guy about this tall with brown hair, wearing a green bro tank? He took the last package of the pamplemousse La Croix from my cart.”
ronnie nearly snapped the wrist of whoever grabbed her arm, but she relaxed upon seeing that it was just taj, who was freaking out over la croix. with an exasperated sigh, she set the box of cereal back onto then counter. “wow, that monster, how are you ever going to survive without amplemousse la croix, taj? we have to start a rumble or something.” she deadpanned, but slowly a smirk crept up against her lips.
music played in his ears as mateo rested against the park bench. he had a long night, and being outside in the warm maine air helped his pounding headache ease up a little. his eyes were closed, and he had no indication of moving any time soon. that is, until his headphones suddenly stopped working. mateo clicked through a couple of applications to see what it really was, but it really was just his headphones malfunctioning. disappointment settled in his stomach, and he groaned loudly. this sucked.
out on her usual run, ronnie was used to passing by residents that she recognized considering she had lived in little winds her whole life, but she was mostly met with pleasant or polite smiles. but, unto her expectance, it was mateo who was huffing with a look of discontentment on the bench she was a few yards from approaching. she slowed her jog down to a halt in front of the male out of, more or less, curiosity. “what’s gotten into you, sunshine?” she teased, sitting beside him as she popped out her headphones before leaning to tighten the laces on her sneakers, “you look more annoyed than usual.”
