i find it extremely telling that here in a fathers story lionel lumps jeffs Homosexuality with all of his other failures in life. and he wonders why he was driven to do what he did. when his homosexuality was treated as a shameful secret it isnt at all surprising that he turned to a lifeless corpse incapable of rejecting him to act out his desires with the same sex

I wonder if Lionel felt that the secrecy surrounding those various manifestations of Jeff’s sexual urges was necessary in order to continue to hide his sexuality, which was the original secret. If that is the case, then his presenting it as a list of different secrets may be his way of obscuring the fact that Jeff’s homosexuality was the central source of shame to Lionel. I doubt this was conscious, but it still has the effect of implying that the secrecy of being gay caused those other harmful behaviors and secrets, when, in reality, the secrecy he imposed on Jeff by being averse to homosexuality had more to do with their inability to face or share the truth.

What is something you wish everyone knew about Jeff?

Sorry for the wait; I had never really stopped to think about that question before. When people hear the name Jeffrey Dahmer, the first things they say are that he ate people, killed animals (something he never actually did), or was a monster. They don't dig any deeper; they just repeat what everyone else knows. They don't understand the full scope of his story. I understand the impact of the case, but above all, he was a human being—someone who felt just like us, suffered like us, and knew what it was like to live with pain. (I’m not justifying his actions here.) But speaking for myself—and I imagine for many people here—we identify with aspects of him: his sense of being a misfit, his fear of loneliness, or the traumas one sometimes has to live with. However, in Jeff's case, he took his "fantasies" much further. As I understand it, when he was in high school, he would show up to class drunk every day. And what did the teachers do for him? Nothing. They preferred to look the other way. His parents were each living their own lives—fighting, and so on. He had no friends; he was practically adrift. If the teachers had been there for him, if his parents had been different, if he’d had even one friend... perhaps the "story" would have turned out differently. "Society" failed him—and failed him badly. Unfortunately, people are always ready to criticize and point fingers, but rarely ready to help someone else. That’s just how it goes. I don't buy the "monster" label; he was a sick human being—very sick. The fact that the jury declared him sane is a different matter; I simply see a man who was deeply ill—sick in both mind and soul.

look, i work at a morgue, i get to see every day how withered and small bodies can get when someone was sick. it’s awful. do you know how bone-thin a leg can get. or how a stomach really looks beneath the ribs when it’s wasted away. the way people’s eyes and cheeks press in to their skull like they’re clinging on for dear life. they died like that, and you want to try and sell me a lie, a pill, a miracle cure that’ll make me live in that state? that’ll make my friends look like that, my family, the people i love? to see corpses in them?

this job makes me appreciate all the more bodies lived in and well-loved. please eat that second serving. please give yourself treats as much as you want. life is not long enough to suffer through it. you’ll be plenty skinny when you’re dead.
