Kibou sees her first: pausing mid-fetch to greet her with a single bark before racing off after his ball. Nagito follows his pup’s line of sight, offering a smile before turning his gaze back to the game. 

 ❝Would you like to join? You could probably throw further than me.❞

In response to the puppy, she gasps in delight, a sweet motherly tone following.

“Ah! Hello baby pooch~”

However, when her gaze turned to the owner, the air of mischief returned.

“Oh? So willing to let a girl beat you at your father-pup game? That’s not good. Why not give me a challenge hm~?”

That said, it wasn’t like she wasn’t glad to see an old friend. There, her pout morphed into a grin.

“But I can’t say I’m not flattered~ What. Miss me?” She tittered lightly.

❝What’s this defeatist attitude? It’s not like you at all. The Chesh I know would get married and be worthless anyway.❞ He’s kidding, of course; something he almost regrets once he realises that she isn’t.

 ❝H-hey, just joking. Where’s this coming from, anyway? You don’t…actually think that, right?❞ He frowns, patting the seat next to him as an invitation.

“The constant questions every time I see them... and the confusion on their face the moment I tell them I’m single... it feels like my worth is based on my relationship status. Especially as I’m passed the age that they were when they were already courting.”

She sighed, deflated. “It makes me feel like I’m defective...”

With a hop skip and a jump, she bounded towards her prey. Practically tackling him with a plastic bag in hand. Squeezing him tightly from the back, she sang.

“お誕生日おめでとう！！！”

A few more huggling motions and she’d released him. Recently, it felt like they’d gotten closer, so she felt more comfortable being the absolute cryptid that she was deep down.

“Did you sleep well??? Did your puppy sing you happy birthday??”

With the hand that held his gift, she covered her mouth as if giggling to patronise him.

At least he’d heard it coming and was able to brace himself. Despite putting on a brave face, however, it’s pretty clear that he was left mildly startled and breathless.

 ❝Have you ever met a singing dog.❞ He rubs his midsection idly, raising his eyebrows at Chesh before eyeing the gift suspiciously. ❝What are you so excited for? Anyone would think it’s your birthday. Hey, uh…you didn’t…booby trap this or anything, did you?❞

Upon watching him rub his midsection, it hit her.

“WAHH!- Sorry! I completely forgot how frail you were...” Pouting slightly, she mumbled the rest. “Even after I was trying to be genuinely nice too..”

That said, this was Chesh. She’d always recover quickly. That same smirk painting her face, she held up the bag.

“Hoh~ You wanna see what’s inside?? Take a guess. Go on. If you get it wrong, then I’ll booby trap something. Maybe your house— I dunno yet.”

“Puppy?” She perked up almost instantly. At the mention of either dogs or any sort of animal, she would always be caught out. A hopeless animal lover—Weak to the fluffy. That said, it’s not like she didn’t catch his suspicious gaze.

Two options: Flirt with mischief to pester him or pester him with something else and pout about it. The answer waaas…

“Tch. ‘You can come if you want’. Must I always have to let you know when I want your company? Why doncha make it more clear that you want me to tag along. Ask me straight up. Go on.”

Her gaze was direct as hazel flicked back to lock onto him. Despite how it begun, she was indeed planning something..

Just as he’d thought. Even now he doesn’t understand Cheshire’s quirks, but he has grown to find them oddly endearing. She means well, in her own way – that, he’s sure of. But she sure does take the long way ‘round to express it. He laughs and gives in, because in the end, she knows he will. 

 ❝…Oh, alright. Kibou and I are going for a walk, won’t you please tag along?❞

 He shoots her a knowing smile – well aware that she has something else up her sleeve. He learned his lesson about assuming otherwise long ago. But he says nothing of it, instead gesturing Cheshire forward. ❝C’mon, let’s go get him.❞

Simply put... she wasn’t expecting that. In fact, she wasn’t quite too sure what she was expecting at this point. So, needless to say, that response caused her cheeks to redden albeit just.

“W-Well.. you know I wanted to come in the first place so...”

A pause and a light flicker in her eyes. She wanted to hold his hand but wasn’t forward enough so she attempted to play it off.

“How far is your place from here? I might wanna race you.”

With a pout, she returned her phone to her pocket along with the headphones.

“But since you’re here..”

There was a pause. The utterance in itself was quiet and she’d appeared to trail off. Looking around to mask the silence, she finally finished.

“Never mind. Enjoying the fresh air? I’d hope so~ you’re weak wittle body needs it after all ohohoh.”

❝Hm.❞ Nagito folds is arms over his chest, fixing Cheshire with a rather suspicious glare. For all the strange stuff she says on a daily basis, it’s stranger still when she decides not to speak what’s on her mind. 

 ❝If I already thought you had something up your sleeve, I’m absolutely positive now.❞ With a shake of his head, that smile returns. 

 ❝Bit it is nice out. I was thinking I should go home and get Kibou, since he’d really enjoy this weather. You can come if you want.❞

As the cord fell, she managed to catch it and swipe it back to her person. The embarrassment faded into more of a denial than anything else.

“Excuse you. That singer happens to be one of my favourite people and I like them a lot so I’d prefer if you didn’t speak about them like that.”

With that, she turned up her nose rather comically.

“Besides, I didn’t expect you to be slinking around here. It’s a park for small children. What. Are you looking to adopt? Or kidnap.”

With that, the usual smirk returned.

❝And she’s back.❞ Nagito chuckles. What had once been a series of offputting quirks had so quickly become normal to him, it’s hardly a day with Cheshire if she isn’t either daring him to do something extreme, or accusing him of something even moreso. 

 To the point where it’s almost endearing. If she asked, he’d say it’s like watching a cat roll over and fall off a table. 

 ❝None of the above. I was just passing through. Though, now I’m kind of obligated to turn your own question back on you.❞
