She Rockers, Islam B-Boys, and African Homeboy by Normski, 1987-88.
1980s hip hop style and attitude was often seen as a modern expression of black consciousness. The music culture had a large black following from its beginnings in the Harlem and South Bronx areas of New York, where there were large African American communities. The bold patterns of Kente-cloth, a traditional West African fabric, articulated the pride many people from the black Diaspora retained for their African heritage.
B-Boying is considered one of four original elements of hip hop, alongside rapping, DJing and graffiti. The term refers to break-boying; a style of street dance that originated in New York, largely among African Americans in the early 1970s. The B-Boy stance of leaning back with arms tightly folded was made famous by Run DMC. B-Boy fashion often featured branded trainers and baggy sports clothing, which would be customised to reflect individual identity.
Donna âShe-Rocâ McConnell, Dupe Fagbesa and Alison âBetty Booâ Clarkson made up the rap trio She Rockers. She Rockers worked with the American hip hop group Public Enemy, after performing an impromptu rap with them at a McDonalds in Shepherdâs Bush. The baseball jackets, snapback caps, Adidas high-top trainers and large earrings worn by the She Rockers show the way in which hip hop trends were adopted in Britain.

B.o.B. WROTE A DISS TRACK TO PROVE TO NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON THAT THE EARTH IS ACTUALLY FLAT
Itâs hard to argue with logic that is just words strung together, so maybe B.o.B. just made the smartest move of all.
oh.
Hey, Science Tumblr, can we put together our own diss track?
I got you, @sciencefriday.
Hey B.o.B. you ainât beefinâ with just one guy Mess with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, you contending with Bill Nye I shouldnât even have mention Galileo Galilei Heâd drop you down a well if he were here to today Then weâd see how far down you go, to the center of the Earth Then youâd have to âpologize to the womb that gave you birth
Everything in nature comes back to a sphere Go and ask yourself what you should really fear Some global-ist conspiracy telling you lies Or walking round the Earth with bullshit in your eyes?
Youâre ignoring the knowledge of generations, Bob, Youâre in bed with evil popes and fallen nations, Bob Youâre no better than the guys who quote Deuteronomy What happened, man, did you get Dâs in Astronomy? You want to think in two dimensions, be my guest Iâm in the corner with Copernicus, I stand with the best
Everything in nature comes back to a sphere Bob ask yourself, what should you really fear? Some global-ist conspiracy telling you lies? Or walking round the Earth with bullshit in your eyes?
Letâs take it back for a second here, why donât we? Why do you believe in a flat Earth, B.o.B.? Why in the world did you pick this lie to back You could be rapping âbout getting us outta Iraq Or are you just having fun stirring the pot It sells records, who cares if you believe it or not Right?
Everything in nature comes back to a sphere You gotta ask yourself, what should you really fear? Some global-ist conspiracy telling you lies? Or walking round the Earth with bullshit in your eyes?
Flat-Earth and chem-trails and the Moon-landing hoax Iâm so sick of celebrities making money off these jokes Listen Bob, as a rapper, I guess youâre kinda alright But can you tell me why the sky turns red at twilight? Itâs all got to do with the shape of our atmosphere The operative part of that word, can you hear?
Everything in nature comes back to a sphere You gotta ask yourself, what should you really fear? Some global-ist conspiracy telling you lies? Or walking round the Earth with bullshit in your eyes?
Planets and atoms and eyes are all made of spheres Why is this a fact that you should have to fear? Thereâs no global-ist conspiracy telling us lies Just some mediocre rapper who canât open his eyes
WOAHHHHHHHHHH
Microbes of New York - Small stories, big city
Itâs #MicrobeWeek! Although tbh pretty much every week of your life depends on the millions of microbes in and on your body. This week is particularly special, though, because some our favorite science creators have come together with a special series of videos celebrating all the wee beasties that make up the sentient Petri dish you call âyouâ.
The first video (up top) from AMNH, Microbes of New York, has some fun with a particularly famous Tumblr while giving a voice to the true feelings of some biologically-important bacteria, ones involved in things like bad breath and obesity⊠and gentrification, apparently? You might recognize a couple voices in that one :) The AMNH has a new exhibit called The Secret World Inside You, open through August 2016 and dedicated to bringing the secrets of your microbiome to one of the worldâs best museums.Â
Next, BrainCraft takes a look at the surprising connection between your sleep habits and your inner microbial health. Itâs been said that our gut, full of nerves and hormone receptors, in combination with all the microbes that live there constitutes a sort of âsecond brainâ. So it makes sense that how you sleep affects what happens down there.Â
In this Gross Science video, Anna peers deep into your oral cavity to tell you what actually causes cavities. Youâll also learn that the plaque film that forms on your teeth is nothing to necessarily be grossed out by, itâs just a cooperative living structure constructed by the couple hundred mouth microbes that reside in your food hole/smooch receptacle. Like any relationship, though, it can get out of balance and go bad, which is when Anna cues the gross dental picturesâŠ
The final video, from Science Friday, is⊠um, well letâs just say that I have never once in my life thought about the fact that I am walking around and constantly shedding a fingerprint-like cloud of microbes like some sort of microscopic PigpenâŠ
âŠbut now I canât stop thinking about it.
Happy #MicrobeWeek!
I love this collaboration. Get ready to be fascinated/terrified during Microbe Week!Â
