   “No. Well, I am for this time, I suppose…” She frowns, the frown only deepening as he asks her for her name. “I don’t… There are many names that I go by.”

“This time? What do you mean?” Stinger leans forward. “What are your other names?”

The ocean is his home.

Blue-green colors rush to meet him as Stinger swims up, up past the dark navy rocks he’s been living in for the last year. The feel of sun on his back and face is his personal definition of heaven, and the fish up here are much better than the ones at the bottom of the ocean.

With a quiet splash, he breaks the surface of the water, intending to roll onto the rocky outcropping just on the shore.

His heart stops as he realizes the rocks are already occupied.

With another splash, Stinger is back in the water and acting on instinct as he curls up, letting his limbs hide under his larger back.

Perhaps if he just stays very still...

“Hmm…” she mused; yeah, music might just set that vibe. It’d probably spell out more trouble if they even attempted to get the restaurant’s speakers playing. Probably even attract the security guards who’re supposedly ‘on duty’ tonight. Sophie reached into her pockets and pulled out her phone. 

“I knew this playlist would come in handy someday.” she turned to him with a grin and pressed shuffle. As the music played, she adjusted the volume and placed her phone on the ledge. She made sure the phone was positioned in a way that wouldn’t fall into the pit’s oblivion and hopped over to Stinger again. 

“Is this any better?”

Stinger nodded his head to the beat of the music. He wasn’t sure why humans did this, but he had seen it on several movies and television shows before, and it seemed like the right thing to do.

“Now what do we do?” Stinger gestured to the arcade. “Do the humans enjoy playing these games?”

His voice muffled through the layers of plastic balls that covered the top of her head. Sophie’s head popped out of the pit, and she exhaled air as if she had been holding her breath in a swimming pool. She crawled (or swam?) towards him with a smug grin on her face.

“We’re supposed to have fun, that’s what!”

True, sneaking into this restaurant-child entertainment joint was probably one of her worst decisions. Especially in the after hours. But she had to do it at least once.

She picked up a ball and threw it onto his shirt. Although, that didn’t really satisfy her need for ‘fun’.

“…Somehow, I thought this would be a lot funner than I imagined.”

Taking a cue from Sophie, Stinger took an unnecessary breath and dove under the piles of plastic balls. It was...strange, certainly, and not bad, but he wouldn’t call it fun.

Curious, he tried to move without resurfacing, wiggling his arms and legs until he gave up and popped up next to Sophie.

“Maybe it would be more fun if we turned the music on.”
