Congress - Let’s First Kill The Party That Killed India!
As we gather ourselves to realize the evils of demonetization and its far reaching effects for the economy and the people, there's starting to build a dialogue around the issue which is beyond just a critique of the current government and its ostentatious leader. The new dialogue is trying to look for alternatives and suggestions. The first rather ill-informed suggestions are around having a 'cash-less economy' - among the many problems of a cash-less economy are the fact that it would increase the wealth of the banks by giving them more authority over the economy of the nation thereby elevating its control over areas such as politics unless a structural change is brought about, for instance a thorough investigation of ideas like block-chain enabled bank monopoly free economic freedom. The other alternative that people are trying to define is a political one! For the first time after 2 and a half years of the NDA rule, people are asking a very pertinent question - "Who do we look for to provide a matured governance void of theatrics and corruption?" The answer to this question is a rather complex one. The ground reality of India is that it does not have any significant political party as an alternative at a national level and a coalition of regional parties has not proved to be of any worth in the past. Congress remains the only other viable alternative and that option is rot with an inherent lethargy within the party to question its dynastic ways that have ensured its slow death with a series of crippled leaders passing the baton to even more undeserving family members.
Revolution! When a majority of Indians finally read about Fidel Castro's life in the last week they finally saw what wearing a Castro Tee really meant (and the fact that he was not a reggae artist)! They read about a section of world history that is precious. Revolution, they said, is the way forward. India needs to be out on the streets just like the people of South Korea at the moment. As inspiring a dream it is, revolution has its evils.
Revolution is an expensive affair:
Uncountable human lives are lost, families destroyed, babies orphaned. Humanity suffers the most at the cost of any revolution.
The economic growth is hampered. When people are on the streets, they don't work, production suffers which leads to an unprecedented loot of resources by people who are hungry. The violent wealth redistribution is not always easy to recover from quickly.
International relations are nullified post a revolution. New bonds have to be made, old bonds need to be redefined.
There's absolutely no guarantee to produce a 'good' system post a revolution: French revolution, Egypt, Anna Hazare Movement are all examples of revolutions that created, if only for a short time, a much worse system that only led to disorder and chaos.
In any violent revolution, the radical elements take the center stage.
The end result of a revolution is quite unpredictable. A revolution can easily plunge a country like India into a constant spin of political unrest and economic turmoil.
An unsuccessful revolution can easily result in stronger restrictions on individual liberty which in turn produce social structures that are insidious and plain right evil; Czechoslovakia's communist rule's real evil was people turning against each other to gain official favors or to protect their families.
So, considering that a 'revolution' is more unpredictable an option than any other, it would be foolish to suggest that as a course of action to fight a government that would be willing to do anything to retain power as it has so earnestly shown in several regions of India in the past. We need to turn to democratic means and revolutionize those rather than to find solutions in a revolution that demands human sacrifice! Let's take a step back and analyze why BJP became the majority party in 2014 in the first place. In a FPTP (First Past The Post) election system like ours, the election results are not always dictated by what people truly desire. With a mere 33% vote share, BJP ended up forming the government at the center.
Here's how Congress was directly responsible for this election result and the resulting mess:
In a FPTP system voters don't vote 'for', they 'vote' against; weak opposition essentially is a ruptured democracy because people don't have an alternative - the elections then are a mere formality.
Media plays a vital role in swaying voters away from political parties that would not play a major role at a national level. The reason why Aam Admi Party performed miserably even when their state presence was spectacular even post 2014.
Deverger's law states a FPTP system eventually converges to a two-party system. Congress providing the weakest alternative in the recent indian politics ensured that voting for any party other than BJP was a vote wasted.
It won't be far from truth if I said that Congress is largely responsible for the mess created by a megalomaniac PM that India is in at the moment. Failing to provide a viable option for the the democratic process is a sin that Congress would never be able to redeem itself from. Its autocratic dynastic party structure is the only reason why India was thrown into a sea of scams and organized loot done by almost all political parties of India. Congress leadership protected positions of power for its incapable and morally degraded seniors by providing leeway to everyone to plunder. But, in politics, money is sacrificed to gain power. BJP was never going to settle down with sharing the spoils of the loot that Congress organized; a well fed snake sizes its master for its next meal! Congress, the party that gave India quite a few statesmen also gave India some of the worst nightmares - Indira Gandhi, the leader who changed Indian politics forever and dragged it into a dynastic political hell-hole and Narendra Modi, a power hungry, mean authoritarian with theatrics and propaganda at the center of all his policies. The slime of hate that the nation is floating in right now due to its morally corrupt government is a direct result of Congress's inability to provide honest leadership within the party. That's all about what happened and what should not happen. But, where do we go from here? How do we 'make India great again'? How do we clean up this mess without the whole nation thrown into a fire of revolution? I believe that Congress, the creator of this mess, is solely responsible for the clean-up act! Here's what they need to do:
Start a revolution within the party. Throw out the powerful families that run the show and take charge of the situation.
Put an end to dynastic politics. Give merit of a candidate importance over the family name he or she carries.
Create a new democratic political system within the party. If one applies Conway's law to the situation, the political structure of the parliament is going to reflect the political structure of the party ruling it. We've seen that with BJP, the disappearance of other stronger forces like Advani, Vajpaee within the party created a central concentrated power instituted as Modi. This is exactly how the country is being ruled right now - all independent agencies like RBI, Judiciary, Planning Commission (now Neeti Ayog) and other premier institutions are losing control to the PMO. Congress needs a cleanup of their internal organizational structure and they need nothing less than a revolution to be able to do that.
If Congress shows this resolve, if they can use this desperate situation prevailing in the country to their advantage and launch a protest within the party to overthrow their masters we would have a Congress that's an alternative once again. India is ready to march if there's a leadership that's ready to march with them. People like Rahul Gandhi would never appeal to even a marginally informed Indian as a leader they can look up to. I might be entirely wrong, it is possible that Rahul Gandhi's capability is misunderstood but that's besides the point. His credibility is worth nothing in the current political scenario and it is not about to change in a long time and sadly, India is not in a position to wait any longer. If Congress does not wake up to the realities of the current times, we are going to have many more demonetization like disasters. The Congress leadership needs to be dragged to the guillotine of political execution if India is to have its revolution!
