The sign that Kotallo heard her coming was only a momentary glance over his shoulder, a polite nod just a hint from his chin. The silence that ensued was the Marshal's way of trying to pick his words carefully. "No," he hummed. "Not usually. But I haven't heard music like this before. It's... energizing."

His hand turned to absently rub at the remainder of his opposite bicep. A tic. "Did you introduce your music to them? You said they would sample the things you would play." Kotallo pointed absently at ED-E. The word 'them' came with some force of confusion but respect; he wasn't sure which pronouns to use for a machine.

Her smile grew a little bit then, pleased and curious -- questions about the music of his corner of the galaxy and his preferences were bit back for the time being. There would be time to talk about it later, a card up her sleeve for another time or different opportunity.

"Say what you will about humans -- I think we've got the market cornered on music," playful, but genuine too. There didn't seem to be a wrong answer; ED-E was ED-E, and the personification of pronouns didn't seem to bother them one way or another, "Play some Dolly Parton for me, won't you sweetie?"

The volume lowered -- background music, still present for the conversation, but happy to lull into something less front and center now that Six had been reintroduced. She crossed over towards the small eye-bot, a shoulder leaned against its chassis, stable and strong where it was welded into place.

"I guess I did. ED-E is old human tech. I think he might've had some inheritance of humanity from that alone, but I think that's just me projecting," Her gaze didn't shift off the little robot, and her expression never wavered from the soft admiration she had, doting and protective, "Of course, with the hardwiring, they're free to explore the extranet, so I think they've done plenty of sampling without my input."

A series of chirps followed. Something like a giggle; whatever Six might've been talking about was a pointed inside joke. Bright blue eyes finally shifted to look at Kotallo again, smile soft and intrigued.

"Usually ED-E makes people nervous. There's a lot more freewill than VI usually have behind their solid state."

Once Six showed him his meager quarters, Kotallo was quick to hole up; he had thinking to do. At least he kept his manners as he asked for extranet access so that he could do his own research.

And he did it for quite a while, brushing up on the basics, trying very hard not to feel overwhelmed by the foreignness of all of it. Despite her friendliness, Kotallo didn't want to bog Six down with unnecessary questions-- he probably seemed ignorant enough. He felt out of place.

But eventually it was curiosity that drove the Marshal to leave his room to track down the thing that had piqued his interest the most. When Six located him, he was standing in front of ED-E, a pad in hand scrolling through information-- a list. "Can you play this one?"

A sting of a guitar lilted through the cabin. Kotallo jumped a bit in his sandals, but smiled all the same. "Excellent. And... what about this one? What's a banjo-?"

The meeting had resulted in an outcome better than expected. Positive footing, points of relation -- after showing Kotallo the meager kitchen and the extra space that would be his living quarters, she was content to retreat to her own room; a little bit of decompressing was welcome. No matter how practiced she was, to play her role in a new world still required a great deal of energy. It would get easier. It always did.

In the meantime, reshuffling her deck with the new cards she'd added today was done in the peace and quiet of her thoughts as her only company. Part of a report, dutifully catalogued; the rest would come with time.

Music sounded from the main deck of the ship. The little round satellite had been installed where a navigation chair might've once stood. A faint imprint of red lipstick still lingered on the curve of ED-E's original body -- clearly Six's considering the cherry red shade was the same she'd worn when meeting Kotallo.

ED-E was playing the iconic measure of banjo from Deliverance when Six finally joined them, sufficiently up-to-date with her work thus far and curious; there wasn't trepidation here. Just... respect. It put her at ease, even if it might've been unnoticable.

"Neat, isn't it?" She almost looked proud, the same way a mother doting after her child would, "I couldn't have a better XO if I tried. Are you one for music, Kotallo?"

His hands flex a few times before he closes the distance further and inspects the wound. Garrus has some understanding of the basic medical things to close up the wound… he wished Doc was still in for the night… and yet.

“You taken anything for the pain yet?” he asks, not able to look at her fully, as he moves to guide her down, pillow behind her so the wound is facing upwards before he goes to get some items to clean it out and numb the area.

“Once Doc gets in, you’ll let him take a look at it.” It’s a shaky order, and everyone (even the two of them) knows that Garrus can’t order Six to do much of anything even if he’s supposed to be running the show, but that Six can get the sniper to do just about anything she wanted. “Make sure you don’t get infected, or I fucked anything up.” He explains digging through their limited supplies.

"Not yet," part of her, in times like this, doesn't mind the ache or the bite. Others could benefit from the medicine more. Others need the supplies they have to be careful to secure. Those protests are vacant as Garrus lays her down to be comfortable. Almost romantic, if she lets herself squint.

"Reckon your confidence is awful reassurin'," Her eye glimmers with something teasing, a smile through the wince, "Don't reckon you'd give me gangrere 'r nothin'."

It's then she plays the game they always do: staring down the strange line they seem to be on the cusp of crossing time and time again. Friends, close friends, trusted confidantes. Six rests her hand on Garrus' shoulder gently, a way to shake him out of the quiet edge he's been put on at the sight of her injuries.

"I'm alright -- I promise. A li'l medigel, a couple o' staples, and I'll be fine come mornin'. We're alright, Killshot."

SHE FEELS AN ITCH UNDER HER SKIN THE LONGER SHE SPENDS in her new tailored suit, special for the occasion the baron had said, just another employer in a sea of vultures that got rich taking more than their share, at least he hadn't put her in a dress. her father had called it honest work, but it didn't feel honest to her when she had to knock on a families door to demand money that they couldn't afford to part with, or when she had to watch his back while he was sticking his nose where it didn't belong. at least she'd gotten him to bring her to new vegas, she'd never so much as seen it let alone been to the strip, and she was excited despite herself.

" your event's in twenty, sir. s'bout time we go " she hears him grumbling something irritably at her, but she's already tuned him out, staring into nothingness while he did the last of his preening before his big meeting. part of her hopes he'll fuck it up, if only he didn't sign her paychecks. when they enter the casino, they are some of the last to arrive, there are barons as far as her modified eye can see and she has the briefest thought that if they all died here in this room, things would be a lot easier for people like her in the mojave. she doesn't protest when she is dismissed, if she was lucky some violence would spark up and he'd die or she'd save him and get a raise, either worked just fine for denali.

she wanders with no direction until she feels security's eyes on the back of her neck, and quickly makes her way to the bar after that to get them off her scent, she wasn't doing anything sneaky, she just kept getting caught up in the glamour of the place, her father's stories did it no justice, she thinks now he must've downplayed it so she didn't get any ideas about running off to the city. she doesn't even know what she's meant to order, she'd plenty before, home-brewed moonshine and a taste of tequila on her twenty first birthday, but that all felt to plain to ask for, and she already felt the fool in this shiny casino with her muddy boots and borrowed suit. she panics as the bartender turns to her and thinks of what her grandfather always liked to drink.

" can i get, uh, whiskey on the rocks - and put it on baron elko's tab " she wills herself to sound more confident than she feels, her lips quirk up instinctively, and by some higher mercy she does it without looking strange, though perhaps she's brought more attention to herself than she intended already.

It's a familiar game at this point -- finding important figures for the stability of New Vegas, beyond this war and the inevitable scarcity that losing the New California Republic's presence will introduce to the Mojave at large. They gotta know how to keep the lights on when all is said and done. Ain't just about the now -- it's about the later.

But the war ain't over yet, she'd said, ain't it too presumptuous?

Nah, baby. Benny had said, lighting up a cigarette she can still smell on her dress. It's preventative.

It's why she's here, in a dress mercifully preserved by time, like it's stepped out, with her, into the present day from an old world poster or advertisement for a swanky top shelf liquor. The only thing that betrays the Courier's timelessness is the evidence of the haggard and violent world they live in: a four pointed star, blooming its way across her forehead, ravaging sun kissed skin in the evidence of a fight she has somehow miraculously survived.

She hopes her smile is enough of a distraction from her scar, and wields both as she cuts through the crowd of gamblers and guests alike. They need to secure a deal tonight; between the Strip and the rich investors who can keep the cap mill churning. It's time to scope out the players: ones who can help her kiss up to the grand baron with more ease than she would otherwise be able to garner alone.

"Y'ever hear what they say 'bout folks that shoot whiskey?" Her elbow is propped on the bar, the palm of her hand a soft pillow for rouged cheeks. Six sits on a nearby stool, eyes glimmering with a playful, inviting amusement. Beside her sits a martini, one she's nursing slowly and with a sense of appreciation, "Maturity, depth, confidence -- there's an awful lot o' mystery and wit what comes with a neat glass o' whisky, and plenty of stories to tell."

A small pause, and her lips twitch a little more, a smile growing slightly at the promise of something more, "D'you reckon that's true? Reckon you got any stories?"

The humor she met him with, this time, was met with a slightly more noticeable smile from Kotallo. "I would appreciate that, yes. The... simulations. Or just... talking."

Awkward, maybe, but he wasn't used to anyone flirting with him really.

He tentatively stepped on board, though he tensed as ED-E beeped and chimed, eyes widened for a long moment. He even went so far as to reach towards his back, but stopped himself. The Marshal's jaw was a bit slack as he slunk behind her to take the tour. "Yes," though it was obvious enough with how he stared around. "What is... Edd-Ee? Tell me you've tamed a machine to... make music."

ED-E made a lot of people uncomfortable; was it AI? Was it safe? It generated a lot of questions, a lot of concern, a lot of mistrust.

Six was used to all those things. As she turned to look at Kotallo, her smile was genuine; it seemed she carried a fondness in her eye at the mention of her traveling companion, "Taming is... I'm not sure if it's the right word. ED-E likes to sample the recordings of the songs I play when we're traveling. Though I'm sure if it wanted to make its own music..."

A drift off, an invitation and in case ED-E wanted to try now. Shave and a haircut played, and Six laughed, "Close enough, I guess -- I found ED-E while traveling near Eden Prime, a satellite that had been powered down. It's... old -- First Contact War old. I powered it up with help from my ship's ion engine and transferred the files to my nav -- it's been nothing but helpful."

Hopefully it was a suitable explanation; even if it wasn't, Six was carrying on, "There should be enough space in the cargo bay at the moment if you need a place to stretch or get some training in. Let me show you, and then you're free to freshen up and get cozy while I get our route ready."

His heart was hammering in his chest so hard that Boone was fairly sure everyone else could hear it– thump thump thump against the hollow plate of a dead man’s armor.

But they couldn’t, somehow, and Boone kept his jaw squared and his breathing tight, his posture rigid and militaristic as they entered Caesar’s tent. He’s going to know. He’s going to figure it out. Just shoot him now, you won’t leave alive, but he won’t either.

But a glance to Six changed the course of his thoughts.

“Spymaster, you’re dismissed.” It was the first time Boone had heard Caesar’s voice, and it shook him to his core how very human it was. How normal.

But it didn’t shake him quite as badly as the idea of leaving Six alone in this godforsaken tent, surrounded by these hellish beasts. He was, for a moment, frozen solid.

“Vulpes. You’re fucking dismissed.”

He had no choice. It went against every instinct, every urge, but Boone bowed his head to the fucking Caesar and stepped outside.

Six held her breath; the Caesar was who they needed to convince, more than anyone. If he held suspicion, then this charade wouldn’t last. She could only field so much distraction, impetuous and shameless in her introduction as possible. Fortunately, the other shoe had yet to drop; the Caesar, satisfied, dismissed his spy, and Six could let herself breathe easier.

No goodbye glance, no acknowledging nod. She could apologize to Boone about it later. Better that Boone were not here now, as she offered saccharine apple butter to a man deluded and demanding. Benny, a prize dangled in front of her. She could feel his eyes boring holes into her as the Caesar didn’t hesitate in dropping the platinum chip in her hand.

It was as she remembered it, but less impressive as it had been, built up in her mind. Not as heavy, not as cool to the touch. Not otherworldly, just a tool. One she was meant to use for the Legion’s benefit. One that was needed for the bunker that sat beneath Fortification Hill. She didn’t think to hard about the way the Caesar seemed to look at her -- a woman, easy to convince, as all of them were. Ugly in her confidence, a liar in her aptitude. She would be won over by his charisma, a cult of personality enough to conquer the East.

The Courier took it all in stride. Before her task, the offer to speak with Benny was offered. She thanked him for it, and then promptly ignored the Chairman. Knowing he stewing, beaten and tied together so tightly that no doubt he was stiff now, was all that he deserved. Wherever Vulpes had skulked off to wasn’t her business, not yet.

Whatever she was meant to do, whatever she did -- the only proof of the work being done was a rumble beneath the earth. The ground quaked in a small tremble, enough to be felt and to shake the racks of weapons lined up outside their gladiatorial pit.

It was past noon when the Courier finally returned to the Caesar’s tent, poker face still on, though with the slightest impression of a smile; the satisfaction of a job well done.
