“Play Buffy,” excuse me? First of all, I dress way more fashionably than she does and I’d be insulted if I thought you knew what you were saying, but I’m cutting you slack on your pop-culture-references on account of the whole robot-thing. Well…and okay, maybe I’m not much more fashionable honestly, but at least I have better taste in boys. And secondly, for the record, no I don’t have to “play Buffy,” thanks, but that doesn’t give you the right to be condescending to me, you – you useless tin can. At least I can fight the bad guys, which is more than you can say, isn’t it? So maybe don’t dismiss my “gallivanting” when all you can do is play dress-up while the actual fighters are off risking their lives and doing important things.

Yeah – like the equivalent of decades more, actually, when you think about it. You’ve been alive for centuries and you fought once. I’ve been alive for fourteen years and I’ve fought hundreds of battles. So maybe you should trust my judgement, given that ratio. And don’t talk to me about the “bigger picture.” I didn’t risk anything bigger picture-level. It’s not like I turned into an elephant and stomped on the little turd’s head or otherwise gave away my morphing powers, okay? All I did was punch him. And considering he said that Jake was only into Cassie because he “thinks chubby chocolate tastes better,” I think I showed way more restraint than he deserved. I’m practically Gandhi over here, really.

Hm, I’ll take your word on that one I think. Fashion has never been something I’ve paid an overt amount of attention to. The same goes for boys, and relationships in general, but that’s beside the point. Besides, I’m made from a material far superior to tin.

Rachel. I respect you. I respect your bravery. I respect all you have had to sacrifice. But if you ever insult me like that again, I will prove to you the loopholes in my programming. If you think that my lack of ability to engage in battle means I was any less involved in battles, you’re so wrong. How do you think I’m able to strategise with you kids? I may not have laid hands on a tenth the number of enemies as you, but war takes more than soldiers on the ground. Believe me. I’ve seen more wars than you have aliens.

Well that’s something, at least - God knows we don’t need another animal related catastrophe in this school. But... Let me know if this kid says something like that again, okay? I might be able to work something out.

It doesn’t matter what he said. It was awful, and he deserved to be in pain for being such a…such a stupid gross neanderthal prick. And as far as I’m concerned, Mr. Lewis can share the pain next time he lets someone get away with language like that. Believe me, Controllers are just practice compared to what I’ll do to this jerk if I ever get my hands on him where there’s nobody to see and stop me…

Not directly, no. But the other Chee have taken your place when you're galavanting off and removing heads, and your otherwise conspicuous absence I doubt would have gone unpunished. As for this time, that depends. Do you have to go and play Buffy, or are you gonna do your time like a good girl?

As cautious as I am to trust your judgement as to when violence is necessary, I will also admit you have a little more experience in that area. Huh, something a human knows more than me about, who'd have thought? Anyway, my point is, don't go risking stuff just to get back at this kid. Bigger picture, Rachel, okay?

Uhh, I can so criticize him, because he wasn’t doing his job he was being a pain in the butt. I so do not deserve to sit a detention for just bopping some jerkoff in the face a little, not after he said something totally not okay about Cassie. It’s got nothing to do with what I can or can’t “handle,” it’s the principle of the thing! He’s the one who should be in detention, not me!

Temrash cocked his head, thinking. “Well, we’re expecting a total attendance of about 350 people. Somewhere around…80, 90 are expected to become full members tonight? I didn’t think we’d make the numbers, but the recruiting campaign really came through in the last couple of weeks.” His mouth quirked with a smile. “Not counting the adult volunteers who’re coming by after work and whatnot, we have…I think about 30 students of various ages pitching in and helping out. Mr. Chapman and the teachers are gonna help too, of course, but we’re still feeling a little shorthanded, since they can’t necessarily stay the entire party and whatnot. I know there’s been a last call of bribery by the teachers to recruit extra hands, whether Sharing members or not, but I don’t know the numbers pulled from those.

"Setup is good. And yes, I will put your name down for manning the bouncy castle. God knows better you than me.” Temrash rolled his eyes and made a face. “I think I’ll just be hiding behind the propane tanks until it’s time for me to bring the new full members down.”

Erek nodded, thinking. "Should be a good turn out, then. Nice number of newbies, too. Have we got some people to... See if there's anyone there who'll want to join the Sharing?"

He ran a hand through his hair. "Let's be honest, it's probably best that there are more kids helping out. Leave it all to the teachers and it'd be a flop." He shot Temrash a wry smile. "Doesn't matter where they came from so long as they help, right?"

"Neat, that's good with me." He spread his hands slightly "I'm easy with whatever, you know me. As for hiding, I might join you if the kids get too much!" He laughed casually, keeping an eye on his companion's expression.

Yeah…that’s what I was getting at, actually, that you’re no good in a fight. But whatever, not the point. I probably shouldn’t snipe at you just ‘cause my day sucks.

But no, I didn’t punch a teacher. Come on, I’m not completely stupid. And the jerk I did punch totally had it coming! And I barely bloodied his nose. No, Mr. Lewis was the jerk who overreacted and gave me detention for a totally-not-uncalled-for punch. A weak little punch at that. If I’d known I was going to get a detention for it, I’d have hit that loser way harder. Nobody gets to talk shit about my friends and get away with it.

I'm no good in a fight, doesn't stop me helping you lot out when you need impersonators. Gotta love the loopholes. Hmph, you would snipe at me whether your day sucked or not, so I can't say I'm particularly bothered by it.

Hey, don't blame me for asking. I wouldn't put it past you. What did the kid even do to you? No one in their right mind would get on the wrong side of you, so clearly he either doesn't know you so well or isn't particularly bright. Or both. But anyway, you can hardly criticise your teacher - he's only doing his job. Besides, it's only a detention. Nothing you can't handle, I'm sure even you have the patience for that.

Erek found the concept of friendship a comforting one.

The Chee had, after all, been created as companions for the Pemalites. Or at least, that was their eventual purpose. Amity and loyalty were hardwired into Erek’s circuits, and it was who he was, what he’d been created to do.

Over his many, many years watching the humans grow and learn and spread, he had of course bonded with a number of humans. When he first arrived on Earth, and assisted with building the pyramids, he had a healthy number of friends among the other slaves.

But the problem with humans is they are organic, living creatures. And organic, living creatures are prone to death. The way the attachments developed with Erek meant they became hardwired into him. When a human he considered a friend died, the sensation was similar to a wire being cut, a component being removed – because that was, more or less, exactly what had happened. It was something – someone – who had brought themselves into his life, let him grow attached to them, and then left.

Erek often found it difficult to empathise with humans. But it was in relationships that he was most like them. He needed companionship to function, he needed that mutual loyalty that comes from a close bond with another creature.

And sometimes, the Chee and the dogs just didn’t quite cut it.

Fair enough. But from what I've seen of you fighting, I'm glad that's not all you do. You're good - very good - but that doesn't tend to be acceptable behaviour in normal human life.

Hey, since when were they my battles? They are quite literally not my battles. Physically cannot fight, remember? Pacifist android at your service. Just because I've been on the planet for a few more millenia than you...

Wait, Rachel, slow down. Was it Mr. Lewis you punched, or Mr. Lewis who gave you the detention? Not sure which I would prefer, in honesty.

"Yup, I’m on hazing—er, newbie—duty," Temrash answered cheerfully, a satisfied smile on his face.

He cocked an eyebrow at Erek. “I’m sure Mr. Chapman just forgot about you while he’s running around like a chicken with his head cut off,” Temrash suggested, which got a titter of giggles from students passing by. “And y’know, if you want things of more importance you should ask for them. Hell,” he snapped his fingers, “no time like the present. Mr. Chapman’s so busy right now I’m sure he’d be dying for an extra pair of hands. Why don’t you ask him what you can pick up off of his plate? Or if you’d rather not, I can ask him for you.”

Erek blinked, noting Temrash’s expression. “How many d’you think we’ll have this time?” He asked.

The corner of Erek’s mouth twitched up and he laughed. “I reckon I can let him off for that then, ha! Sure, I’ll go talk to him.” Erek didn’t add that he could, of course, have everything organised perfectly in seconds. He already knew how. A few minor tweaks and perhaps things wouldn’t run so smoothly.

"It starts at 7, right? What time do you think we should be there, 6:30ish? Folks want to know," he explained with a hand wave.

Temrash looked up from his history notes as he heard his (host’s) name being called. “Oh, hi Erek. Yeah, we’re on schedule as far as I know. Random bear rampages notwithstanding. Mr. Chapman’s been working really hard to get everything repaired; you know how embarrassing it’d be if we had to go tell all those big-wigs that the appreciation party has to be pushed back. The lawyers and execs would get on our cases about how hard it was to schedule even the one day off.” He grinned. “I think Mr. Chapman will probably keel over for a week or something after this is over.”

He quickly ran through his mental list of Yeerk volunteers but came up blank for Erek; perhaps Iniss hadn’t assigned him a task yet. “What’ll you be in charge of on the big day?”

Erek nodded with a smile. “Good to hear. The bear caused... Quite a disturbance going up the ranks, so I heard. Chapman is great for keeping everything on track, so it all should go to plan.” Erek laughed slightly. “Quite probably, let’s just hope it all runs smoothly enough to give him time to do that!”

He shrugged nonchalantly. “No one has told me yet, so I’m assuming that I’m just hanging around and doing anything that needs doing. You know what I’m like, I don’t tend to get given anything of massive importance,” he added with a grin. Hopefully he could do just as he had said to Temrash: it would mean he had time free to do any scouting he could manage.

“How about you? Helping our with the newbies, right?” Erek asked. Best to know who would be where, after all.

Erek strode through the school hall, his demeanour careful: confidence was key, of course, but too much could attract attention. Or arouse suspicion. Neither of which would be beneficial.

Hands in his pockets, Erek swung his bag round to check his timetable. He had no need to, what with every recollection stored in the hard drive that was his brain, but the art of keeping up a perfectly normal human appearance had become second nature to him.

The memories weren't the only thing stored in his mechanical head. Erek tried not to think about the terrified Yeerk caged in his metal skull. The Yeerks hated the lack of senses, it was something they craved, and if they were deprived of it, well...

Erek wasn't torturing the Yeerk. Not really. He wasn't causing it pain, there was nothing psychological that couldn't be reversed once there was peace and the parasite could join it's siblings. He had no plans to kill the creature.

So why did he feel so uneasy? This must be within the parameters of his programming, else it would be impossible for him...

Glancing up, Erek saw the body of Tom Berenson walking towards him. He pushed his unease to one side, shooting the boy a slight smile as their eyes met. Tom Berenson. Temrash 357. Erek had already been posing as a controller when Tom had been infested, along with many others, but it was hard not to feel personally involved with this particular Yeerk. His uneasy alliance with the self-named animorphs meant that he faced yet another moral battle whenever the brother of their unofficial leader became involved.

Right now, however, the ethical details of his awkward situation would have to wait.

"Hey, Tom. How's it going? Is the fundraiser all set to go?"

Erek knew from one of the other Chee that The Sharing's fundraiser was also a front for a few brand new infestations. He would have to let Jake know of this as soon as possible. And possibly cause some sort of delay - either with or without the kids' help.

He had been on this planet for far too long to let the Yeerks destroy all he had lovingly watched the humans grow to become.
