Relax
I wanted to design a bathhouse in a man-made natural environment where people could experience that they were bathing in a river and in a forest. My exterior pool design was inspired by my Artist model-- Junya Ishigami, and I chose weeping willows and koi fish because in the parks I visited when I was in China, there were many weeping willow trees planted around the lakeside, their branches long and soft, swaying with the wind and their leaves lightly touching the surface of the water, like a gentle hug. I liked the environment, it made me feel so comfortable, I wanted to add that feeling to my bath so that more people would get to know the tree. And the lakes in Chinese parks are usually full of Koi fish, so I added the fish tank to the pool. These three elements make up what I think is the most comfortable environment for people in the bathhouse to feel like they are interacting with the fish in the river, soaking in the hot spring while experiencing the beautiful scenery and letting their bodies blend into nature.
For the materials, most of them are the main things of modernism buildings. The main reason for my material use is that I wanted to blend my favourite architectural style with nature. Interestingly I found that the colour of cement blends well with stone, and timber is both a modern building material and a natural material. So I used timber extensively, including a wall overlooking the back garden, which plays an important role in the transition between the modernist interior and the natural elements of the back garden. You can also see the timber anywhere in my bathhouse, such as the chair, and the eaves.
My intention in designing this bathhouse was not only that I wanted people to experience the scenery I described, but also, and most importantly, that they would be aware of the natural elements that we have access to in our lives, such as parks, beaches and roadside plants. Nature is something that we often come into contact with, but rarely observe/notice.
Ergonomic dimensions
As the area available in the changing room is relatively small, I needed to work out all the dimensions closely to ensure that the space could be utilised. I worked out the dimensions of the disabled toilet, the normal toilet, the walkway, the shower, the washbasin etc. Also the wooden chairs in the bathhouse lounge area.
Process of Final 1:100 Model
I bought the fake grass powder and trees to make my final model, these material can make the model looks better and more close to nature.
Koi fish 🐟
The koi carp represents fame, family harmony and wealth in Chinese culture. It is a feng shui favourite, symbolising abundance as well as perseverance and strength, and has a mythical potential to transform into a dragon.
Of course I chose them because I have kept a lot of them in China and I think they are the best ornamental fish.
Material
Most of the materials are predominantly modern, as my favourite style of architecture is modernism and my theme is nature, and I wanted to combine the two styles. 1. Cement ----- is used as the material for the walls, columns and flooring of the bathhouse as it is similar in colour to the stone and is also a major modern building material, it blends well with the stone in the bathhouse.
2. Timber ----- for the rear wall, the chairs in the lounge area and the eaves above. It is a modern building material but also a natural element, so I have used this material extensively in the bathhouse and presented it in different ways. For example, the chairs are made up of rectangles of different sizes. The eaves are made up of geometric patterns. The wall is a long stripe of timber, which plays an important role in the transition between the modernist interior and the natural elements of the back garden.
3. Glass - as a material for the fish tank, so that the fish can be viewed at any time.
4. Stones ---- surround the edges of the outdoor pool and interior landscaping. As a natural element that can be found everywhere, stone is a perfect addition to the bathhouse, its colour is similar to concrete and it can be connected to the WW exterior wall.
Drawings
Many sketches of different layouts were made, and through continuous adjustment and refinement, the final design was finally arrived at.

Plant Research
My bathhouse is separated from the WZ by pine trees as a 'divider' / fence, which also protects the privacy of the bath. Both outside and inside can see each other vaguely, as the trees do not completely block all views.
The reason I chose the pine tree for the set is that in Chinese culture it means perseverance and hard work, and it appears in some national parks and folk tales.
I kept the Dicksonia Fibrosa in the back garden because I thought it would act as an umbrella to keep the sun and rain off the entrance, but I chose to plant Pine trees in the rest of the garden.

Design idea
This is my next design process. I feel that the last idea was limited by the floor plan, so I decided to design boldly this time, because the last hot spring pool was too ordinary and boring, this time I decided to make a big pool that can connecting the outside and the inside, and this large area of the pool can add some natural elements to the design and the interior part I will keep the chairs inside the pool. I added fish ponds and trees to the outdoor pool, so that people can feel that they are in a natural environment when they are in the hot spring. I hope they come to this bathhouse to relax, and I think the natural environment is a place to relax, so i combine the hot spring pool with more nature elements.
model || design idea
For this bathhouse idea I kept part of the previous idea (4th picture) (wooden chairs and spa 2&3). This time I have repositioned the changing rooms, as last time I did not take into account the entrance and exit of the lifts, so this time I have put the changing rooms inside the most. This way people can see the whole layout of the bathhouse before they go in to change. Hot Spring 1 is the lowest temperature pool and is the pool where people can start to soak and let their bodies get used to the temperature. Some people may get dizzy after a long soak, so they can return to Pool 1 to lower their body temperature, or go to the yellow marked area to rest. I have removed the front and back walls so that they can touch and feel the natural environment while soaking/resting.
Formative assignment
In the class I explained how I decided to go for natural and modern and how the design of my floor plan blended the two styles and I received a lot of interesting feedbacks.
