After volunteering at my local zoo for 3 years, I still had friends and family members preaching to me how zoos are animal jail. No. Theyâre not. A lot of animals would be extinct without them. Yea, there are bad zoos, but you hear about those more because news focuses on bad things.

Like all fish that trickle into the chain store markets, Iâm seeing ottos being housed improperly more and more, and itâs important to remember that they have a specific needs that might not mesh with your tank set up. These fish can live for 5 years or more in the right setup.

do you know of any pets insects that live longer than a few months and are legal in the us, but aren't super high maintenance and aren't too costly? my therapist suggests that i get a get to help me out of this slump i'm in- says caring for something could help me get back into a little routine and give me a reason to be around. i've always loved insects (and spiders!), but due to my depression, i can't be walking thing or doing too much in a day. sorry for the weird question!
I cannot even express how much I love this ask! Bugs are highly underrated as pets and I think they have great potential as a source of engagement/stress-relief for people who wouldnât otherwise be able to have a pet.
Youâve actually got quite a lot of options. Here are my top recommendations:
1) Madagascar hissing cockroach
Large, canât fly, slow moving and very gentle. They live 2-5 years with proper care. You can have a whole colony or just a couple. Theyâll eat dog and cat food, vegetable scraps, fish flakes, pretty much anything (itâs so cute to watch them eat). They can learn to recognize individual humans and wonât hiss when someone they know and like picks them up.
2) Bess beetles.
Gentle, slow moving, and make adorable noises. They have the most varied vocalizations of any insect; adults live in pairs and raise offspring together (though itâs very rare for them to breed in captivity). They live around 1-2 years and eat rotting wood (if you canât find a local source there are companies you can buy it from).
3) Tarantulas
Not an insect, but since you mentioned you like spiders I thought I would throw this out there. Tarantulas are very low maintenance pets; just misting (for humid species), refilling the water dish, and feeding every 1-2 weeks. Most species could go for 2 weeks or more without any care and be totally fine. Some of the mellower species will tolerate gentle (and very careful) handling. Tarantulas are a bit more of a long term commitment though as females can live 15-20+ years.
4) Praying mantis
These guys can be a bit more delicate as nymphs, but they are some of my favorite insects to work with. They are gorgeous and so attentive and cute (fun fact: they groom themselves like cats). Exotic species are in a legal gray area so I recommend buying a well-started nymph of a hardy native species from an actual mantis breeder (not from educational websites selling egg cases). These guys need a bit more care as they need live insects 2-3x times a week as nymphs and fairly regular misting (though Iâve never found feeding a chore since itâs so fun to watch them eat). They are a joy to handle when they get larger and adults of most species can live in an enclosure the size of a large mason jar. Downside is they only live a year maximum.
Hopefully that gives you a good starting place from which to do more research. I would be happy to answer more questions if you have any!

Most sharks are NOT aggressive âby natureâ. If they take a bite out of you (itâs their way of âtestingâ food) itâs because you look like a seal to them from below the water or another type of common prey for them. Iâll touch more on this later.
The whale shark is so gentle, most people can just âhitch a rideâ on their dorsal fin.
People are morons in the sense that they will go swimming with open cuts. Sharks smell that blood and it kicks in their âoh, Iâm hungry, this smells like something good to eatâ sense. Theyâre constantly exerting energy.
Sharks are absolutely vital to our ecosystem. They help keep prey numbers down so they donât overpopulate themselves.
Most studies estimate sharks ONLY kill about 5-15 people PER YEAR, GLOBALLY. If you want to look at other animals: cows kill about 10-30 per, year, hornets and wasps kill about 45-65 per year,the point is the media absolutely sensationalizes shark deaths because of jaws and other movies that mercilessly ruined their reputation
At LEAST 20k per year are killed by lightning, again just to give perspective on what kills us
Many marine designs are based off of the basic design of sharks, given how efficient they are in the water (such as a sharks skin anatomy and physiology)
Carbon is a critical element in the cycle of life â and a contributor to climate change. By feeding on dead matter that collects on the seafloor, scavengers like deep-sea sharks, hagfish and starfish help to move carbon through the ocean.
Sharks very rarely, if ever get sick. Because of this they are important to contributing to medicine

So I talked to a sales associate at petsmart about these incredibly cruel tanks and she gave me a number to call to complain (she hates them and has gotten in trouble at work for telling customers off about them) and I spent 10 minutes going off about proper betta care and they said theyâd never received a call about the inhumane tanks they sell. It always amazes me when people know virtually nothing about their aquariums or what kind of fish or how many live inside of them

i once had a woman argue with me that she didnât have a betta, she had a molly (she showed me pics, itâs a betta for sure) and then proceeded to ask me if she could put a ânemoâ in there with it. she actually didnât know the difference between saltwater and freshwater
I once had someone ask me what would happen if they bred a betta with a clown fish. This wasnât even at work. People are just that stupid everywhere.
I have had people ask if they could keep multiple Oscars in a 5 gallon tank. Not even like juveniles, these were nice medium sized Oscars. A nother time I had a woman argue with me saying that he iguana didn't need uv. People need to research the animals need before buying them and decided if they can provide them properly.

I would like to talk at you about one of my favourite tiny marine goby species.
Meet the devastatingly beautiful Discordipinna griessingeri.
Theyâre also known as the Spikefin Goby or the Flaming Prawn Goby, though they do not live with burrowing shrimp like true prawn gobies. These guys are truly striking, and a species I keep coming back to when Iâm daydreaming about aquariums. Cryptic and shy, they are charismatic when they do appear; waving their large pectoral fins and flicking their first dorsal fin âspikeâ.
Oh, and they are incredibly tiny.

Fishbase has their maximum total length (thatâs length measured from the tip of the head to the tip of the tail) as 3cm, and it seems like few individuals reach that. In my wildest dreams I would have a small colony of these little superstars in a dedicated nano system, with maybe a few other diminutive fish species, like Trimma, Tryssogobius or Aioliops.
But these beauties generally cost upwards of $100 for an individual fish. When compared with the sky high pricetags on some other marine species (Some species go for tens of thousands of dollars which is just⊠holy fucking shit) a hundred buckaroos doesnât seem all that egregious. And, I should note, these fish are not so costly because they are rare (they are listed as least concern with a stable and widespread population according the sources I could find), but likely because they are so small and cryptic, and rarely captured.
So an aquarium with a breeding colony of Flaming Prawn Gobies is probably going to stay a daydream.
Maybe one day, in the far future, you beautiful little fish.
