ML Ficlet: Us against the World
When she told him what happened. She looked so sad.
Chat noir replayed that moment in his mind.
Ladybug had gone on patrol with him, she kept her promise about not missing patrols. For that brief moment, the world was just like how it always was. But then at the end, the night was tainted.
The cat hero listened as she confessed to breaking their identity rule. She had told someone else her identity. He had assumed the worst, that someone blackmailed her, an akuma forced her to talk, someone made her break their promise. But it wasn't the case.
She told him that it had all become too much, the responsibilities, the crushing loss of Fu. Ladybug couldn't hold it alone anymore. He understood her reasoning.
"I can't bear the weight of the world on my shoulders alone anymore."
Those words were what really stuck to him. Those were the words that found a way past his smile and settled in the darkest corners of his mind.
She asked for him to forgive her. She told him that he could do the same. He could tell one person. She wanted things to be right.
He wanted to ask so many questions.
"Why did you tell this person?"
"Why didn't you explain how things were before?"
"Why couldn't you confide in me?"
"What makes this person so trust worthy?"
But, the biggest question is.
Everytime she had broken down from the pressure, when she said she couldn't be ladybug without him, every time she and him would fist bump, and everytime he said to her 'Us against the world', and she would smile and agree... was it all a lie?
But he didn't ask any of those questions scratching his brain. He held it in. He kept that cheshire grin on his face. Just like everything else in his life, he pushed it down and took it. His feelings didn't matter right now. He shushed her softly and told her.
"I understand, you don't need to say anymore."
She looked so relieved to hear those words, and she hugged him. He held her head in his chest. He would ignore how this was more painful then having a cataclysm to the ribs.
Afterward, she was in a better mood. She told him that he can go tell someone who he is. It just can't be her. He knows she said other requirements, but he didn't bother listening. He wasn't going to tell anyone.
Chat noir held his smile until she left. When she was out of sight, all of the pain he pushed down came up like bad tuna.
He left the rooftop. His thoughts circling his mind. He hated it so much.
He hated this feeling of jealousy and betrayal. He hated this anger and sorrow in his chest. He hated that he is mad at her for doing something that was best for her. He hated that he wasn't good enough to be the person she told. He hated that he didn't tell her. He...
He lost his footing, colliding with a billboard.
He looked up to see it was one of the billboards for Gabriel brand. He sees that Radiant pose he took for that ad.
It hit him, thats what he is truly angry about. He hated how he has to do as chat noir what he always did as Adrien. He has to fake a smile and pretend the world is fine. He has to be another image that he never could truly live up to. The love of his life had stripped him of that freedom.
"Us against the world... You never believed it for a second."
