A Siberian Shaman. Date: Original drawing from around 1776; published as a colored engraving in 1803. The source is cited as “The Costume of the Russian Empire, London: William Miller, 1803,” but I couldn’t find the colored version of this engraving in that specific work- it might be from a different edition.
I’m currently writing an overlong pontification on the new Boards of Canada, which I think is generally good (disliked it at first, have listened to it since and liked it more) but I think sadly is an aesthetic regression after (their underrated second best) Tomorrow’s Harvest, which wisely eschewed the nostalgic invocations that plagued the album that came before that. This new one is maybe the most obvious they’ve ever made, laying its narrative on thick. Geogaddi is their masterpiece and this one finds them doing that but not as good, just as Campfire was them doing their debut but not as good. I still love them dearly though.
