...well it's been over ten years since I've attempted this site but hi I guess.
I think I joined the blue birb site for hockey reasons, Discord because chemistry, and here (at least this go-around) mainly because of a little weewoo firefighter show - tumblr was grumping at me for trying to browse without signing up, oops.
Chances are if I'm not online (lol) I'm in the lab yelling at science for not cooperating, at one of my happy places (farmer's market, local botanical garden, my favorite cafe), in the kitchen attempting to cook something, on the couch rewatching something for the millionth time, or...more than one of the above.
Side note: same Ao3 name.
ETA: icon pic was one I took after feeding a giraffe at the zoo last summer (but is currently my Dumpster Fire O'Lantern from this year because spooky season), header pic is sunset at a lighthouse from a few years ago
tagged by @letsdosciencetoit and @sierranovembr, thanks pals. as per usual with this one, i'm making it an open tag because i have no idea who if anyone has any interest.
the only thing i've been capable of writing recently is my tommy/omc fic which will eventually come back to b/t but! i love my guy, give him the fairytale whirlwind romance i beg of you. at some point, tommy will tell buck that he needs to chill out about his ex husband because "i wouldn't be the guy who's capable of making it work for you if he and i hadn't loved each other". ANYWAY. have some whirlwind romance. context: tommy is moving up to washington to be with his man.
They're watching the sun set over Lake Shasta and handing a bottle of beer back and forth when Jack clears his throat.
"I want to ask you something crazy," he says.
Crazy's their stock in trade, so Tommy just hands the bottle back and waits.
"When we get home, there's a couple days after Liv gets back and before I have to go back to work."
"Yeah?" Tommy prompts. He doesn't think he's ever seen Jack nervous like this before. Even so, it comes as a surprise.
"Wanna get hitched?"
"What?"
"Married. Tie the knot. Put a ring on it."
Tommy laughs. "You're—you're actually serious, aren't you?"
"Yep. I spoke to Liv about it before she left for New York. If we get home before 3p.m. Monday, we'll have time to go get a license. Three day waiting period, so we could all go to the courthouse on Friday. Now her birthday's passed, she could even be our witness."
Tommy looks at Jack, at the bottle hanging from his fingertips, at the salt and pepper beard that's been coming in for the whole drive and thinks, my husband.
Jack misinterprets his silence and says, "Or we could do something less crazy. A license lasts sixty days. Or even less crazy and we can just —"
People on Tumblr love sharing information about themselves no matter how asinine it is. And I'm the same way. Everybody tell me what the last thing you drank was.
When Chris decides to accept the offer from Northwestern University, everyone is thrilled for him.
Eddie swings between being incredibly proud of his brilliant son and being terribly sad because his son is going to be two thousand miles away. He sends approximately seven million emails and makes about thirteen billion phone calls making sure Chris has a dorm room that accommodates his needs, that Chris' RA knows what to do and who to call in case of emergency, that Chris will be able to get around the campus easily. Chris is annoyed but also understanding about all of it, and sighs at the idea that he will need to prove that he's cool about stuff.
When Chris tells Buck, Buck just hugs him tightly and whispers that he is super proud. "Always believe you can do anything you set your mind to, and figure out how to do it your way," Buck tells him, somber and encouraging all at once, his blue eyes red-rimmed. "You are gonna be so amazing." Chris is struck when he notices the amount of gray in Buck's hair, and thinks about the pier and the tsunami, and he hugs Buck again and murmurs through the lump in his throat, "You're gonna be okay, kid."
They both cry and laugh about it.
Denny is insistent that they throw a party, so they do end up with one that Chris invites his family and his close friends to. Sometime in the middle of the party, while the grill is still going but most of the appetizers are gone, he needs to take a short break.
He doesn't mean to overhear, but he does when he slips into his room to sit and chill. Buck and Maddie are talking, and from Buck's tone, he is not happy about the conversation.
"...his son is going to be away from him," she is saying, "so maybe you guys can hang out more? He's gonna be lonely. And Theo is always welcome for cousin time."
"Because seeing Eddie every shift isn't enough?" Buck retorts. "I don't know how to make it any clearer to you, Mads, I don't want to date him. I don't care if he's lonely or sad or whatever you think he is. He is my friend and that is it."
"But you two—"
"—are friends." The emphasis is clear. "I'm not waiting for him to realize his hypothetical attraction to men. I am definitely not waiting to see if he's attracted to me. And you have to stop thinking about pushing Eddie and me together for some, some weird obsession you have of us dating."
Maddie snorts. "You haven't dated for years now, Buck. If you're not holding out for Eddie, why haven't you gone looking?"
"Because I don't want to. Is that so hard to comprehend?" Buck sounds tired.
"Buck, you can't still be hung up on Tommy even now."
"Drop it, Maddie. Please."
Chris wants to laugh. The very idea of his dad and Buck together as his parents is ridiculous. Outside of work, they share very little overlapping interests outside of Chris himself. Most of the time, if Buck visits, it's to spend time with Chris.
But then he remembers the way Buck used to light up around Tommy. He doesn't know when they broke up. It was when he was away at his grandparents' place, and at the time he was too wrapped up with his own stuff to pay much attention to anything else. And when he came back, he was busy reconnecting with his own friends that he didn't think to ask about Tommy, and then it just slipped his mind completely.
His dad is probably going to find himself a girlfriend within two months of Chris starting school, Chris thinks. It has never been Eddie's problem getting one; keeping them was always the issue, and without Chris around, maybe Eddie will find someone interesting and fun.
But Buck probably needs more help.
Chris nibbles on his lower lip. Then he scrolls through his contacts and drops a series of texts.
Hey this is Chris
I hope this is still Tommys number
I'm going to Northwestern this fall
and I remembered you once promised me a helicopter ride
I'm old enough now and I figured I wanna cash in on that promise if its still good
Then he pockets his phone and returns to his party. If it is Tommy, then he will find some way to let him know about Buck and Theo, and maybe push him to get back with Buck if he's still interested.
No reason why he shouldn't, honestly. Buck is awesome.
If it isn't, then he is going to bug his dad to get him on board Tommy's chopper anyway. After all, like Buck said, Chris can do anything he sets his mind to, even if he has to find his own way to get it done.
