Achille Etna Michallon, a landscape painter of exceptional talent, won the inaugural Prix de Rome in 1817. His study in Italy had a profound influence on his work during the remainder of his short life (he died of pneumonia at only 25). In this painting, he depicted the commune of Mont-Dore, located on the Massif Central in the Puy-de-Dôme department of central France.
