Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy on him, said,
“No servant has been struck with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart and being distant from Allaah.”
Fawaaidul-Fawaaid, p. 262.
Imâm ibn al-Qayyim [رحمه الله] said:
"Swallow patience, for if it kills you, you’ll die a martyr, and if you live, you'll live honourably."
(Madârij as-Sâlikeen 2/159)
"From Allah's mercy upon His servant is that He tests him with a trial which he can't disclose to others nor can he find anyone who can understand it properly - so that his heart doesn't become attached to anyone else instead of Alläh who he goes and complains to."
Ibn al-Qayyim رحماللة [al-Waabil al-Sayyib | 35]
The Believer should hold themselves to a higher standard when it comes to their akhlāq. Strive to not say except good words to your brothers/sisters. Be patient and suppress your feelings in times of anger. Apologize when you make a mistake. Spread salām between the Believing people. Smile in the face of your brother/sister. Convey the truth in a proper manner.
… But how does one reach the point where their automatic response is the most upright? Many of us have tried to change their ways yet failed at the first try!
Rasūlullāh ﷺ said:
“Indeed, knowledge is gained through learning, and patience through perseverance. Whoever strives for good will be given it, and whoever avoids evil will be protected from it.”
It’s simple: practice patience and you will be a patient person. Practice good words and you will be a sweet-tongued person. Practice forgiveness and you will be a forgiving person.
When you fall, pick yourself up, apologize to those you’ve wronged, and try again.
O Allāh, guide us and all of the Believers to the most beautiful of akhlāq, for verily, none guides to them but You.
Ya Allah, do not lift the cover of Your protection from us, and do not test us with what we cannot endure.
Never have I dealt with anything as difficult as my own soul.
Imam Al-Ghazali

Some of salaf said, “Those who reached what they reached [of their rank] did not do so through (voluntary) salāt and fasting, but rather, through munificence of the soul, integrity of the heart and sincere concern for the ummah.”
Others added, "And through degrading their own (egoistic) selves."

You hope that the path will not be rough so you may survive, but it turns out to be rough and you still survive, to realize that safety comes from Allah, not from the path.
